so, yea I was shuffeling through the pages of the current Issue of "M! Games" and noticed a familiar face! So, I snaped a picture of the little interview-box and translated it into english. The article on that page is about the growing independent scene on console platforms.  Derek Yu, 26, is the editor in chief for the website
"the Independent Gaming Source" and is developing games
himself - lastly, the award-winning "Aquaria".
M!: How do you explain the tremendous success of "Castle Crashers" or "Braid"?
Derek Yu: It is just obvious, that developers love their games.
A part of their success surely relates to the easy avaibilty of these titles -
Downloading games is getting more and more popular.
M!: What are the strengths and weaknesses of independent developers?
Derek Yu:On one hand, they do not have the recources or the manpower, to develop a game like "GTA".
On the other hand, they are forced to be creative, if they want to to achieve their ideas.
They can be slope and more personal, or deal with social or political issues.
In short: Independent developers do things, that big companies wouldn't dare to try.
M!: Why do independent developers develop mostly for the PC?
Derek Yu: The Publisher decides what games get released for consoles,
or which sees a boxed release.That's getting more and more unimportant, though -
distribution models, like Xbox Community Games or the App Store, are the future.
at the moment PC and the web are the easiest way of releasing a game.

yea, you are!  except for Schwäem... which isn't even a word  it's called Schwäche - pronounced... nah - can't explain that well. "Sch" and "ä" are a bitch to spell for foreigners. |

Actually I wanted to type Schwächen. Also, to actually comment on this, it's good to see indies getting more recognition, good to see Derek getting more recognition, but I say it doesn't make much sense. It's about indie console market, and Derek doesn't have anything for consoles (AFAIK). Why not interview Blow or people from TB? Seems like it would have been more relevant. |

It's worth a read I guess. "M! games" had the name "MANIAC!" until recently and is pretty much the only mag left, of those from the 8/16-bit era. Most other magazines got replaced by kids-thingis on how to pimp their "pokin'man". Though, some additional mags get released now, that truely are a worthy read for gamedevelopers. "Gamestar Dev" or "GEE" for example. |
