Hey guys, so there have been some song compos, so I figured why not a photography one?  It's much easier for everyone to participate too!  Grin

So everyone has until the end of the month (Jan. 31st.) to submit a photo that they have taken, and believe conveys a strong sense of atmosphere.

More than just being fun, I think there's a lot to learn here.  When looking through everyone's submissions we might start to grasp that intangible "feel" that gives a place (and a well executed image of that place) atmosphere.

So here a quick FAQ/Rules:

1. No Photoshop; I think this compo should be about trying to capture real atmosphere, not creating artificial atmosphere from pictures that lack it (this could make a good follow-up compo, though)

2. Any camera is allowed, even cellphone/iPhone ones assuming the picture isn't total crap.

3. Submissions: just post your image in this thread, 1 image per person max; a small description of it, and why you think it has atmosphere/the atmosphere you were trying to capture; I don't want to say the writing is required, but I really think everyone should do it;

4. You ARE allowed to post pictures you've taken before this compo.  I think this will allow more people to enter, but if enough people want me to change this one I'd be open to the idea.  I think it would improve the quality of everyone's entries too, as most of us have taken some beautiful pictures at some point.

5. I really don't think I should have to say this, but this is the internet, so: ONLY SUBMIT YOUR OWN PHOTOS.  I'll just have to take everyone's word on this, so please be respectful here.

EDIT: You are allowed to crop your photos, but let me challenge you to try and take one that doesn't require it!  Smiley

Here we go then!

It was a dreary morning and I was hung over. Taken sometime december, so I'll get rid of it if need be.

I took it on a trip on the AIDAbella. Itt's not nearly as atmospheric as I wanted it to turn out, but I blame the bad weather.

Nice idea!

This was taken on the first day of arriving on the island of Boracay, in the Philippines. The atmosphere is one of excitement at having arrived on an island.

Took this on holiday in Italy.

This is gorgeous. It looks totally unreal.

DISCLAIMER: I live in western Canada, so I am not used to vistas not absolutely covered in soggy pine trees.

Thanks! It was the last sunny day in Autumn in Piemonte, which gets very hazy and foggy at that time of year. The view is from a bed and breakfast which is also a winery (everybody's yard there is a winery, though) and I'm standing on a hill amongst the red and yellow grape leaves, looking at a nearby villa in the late afternoon. As for the rolling hills and neat crops, it looks like that all through the region. Totally recommended for a driving holiday - only in Autumn, when the white truffles are in season and relatively cheap.

Moogled: love that Jersey coast pic. I have only been down there once, and it was Atlantic city so it didn't look much like that!

Picking just one is hard, but I think it has to be:

I took this on holiday in Wales, in a cave on the beach near Saundersfoot.  It's the view out the cave mouth at the bright sunny sky, and I think it evokes quite the mood of awe and mystery.
