Uniting the states was the stupidest idea ever.

Can't say it simplified things, no.  Uniting Canada didn't really make sense either.  At some point, usually when there's a massive difference in geography between parts of a country, it just becomes kind of arbitrary.  I mean, British Columbia should have an entirely different culture than Newfoundland (and in a sense it does); any "shared culture" between those places is artificial.*

*all of this is assuming that culture results from humans' interactions with the place they inhabit; and yes, travelling/moving does change things, like with many current Newfoundlanders and British Columbians sharing European roots;
