I was just contacted about possibly distributing my game through Impulse
But I'm wondering if anyone knows about competition issues between Impulse, Steam, and Direct2Drive.
If I go with one service does that hurt my chances of getting on the others?

I hav a a game on Impulse and thir terms are non exclusive.
To be honest I don't think any of those platforms would try and make you sign exclusive deals.
But I don't have any experience with any others.

I did get a hold of someone at Direct2Drive and he said he didn't think it would matter in this instance.

In fact, I believe having a successful game with one service actually increases your chances of getting in with the others as you've now proven you can make then some money.

This. If, for some reason, one of the on-line distributors did want exclusive distribution rights for your game, its quite likely that some additional revenue (money) would be changing hands. Exclusivity is something that a publisher/distributor should always be required to pay for. Never sign over exclusive rights without demanding some manner of compensation. You are forgoing potential sales on other services, and you deserve some incentive for that sacrifice.

But I don't have any experience with any others. I can confirm the bit about Impulse and also I'd like to add that I've signed deals with other two distributors and looked at the proposed agreement of a third one, and I've never seen any exclusivity clause. I guess that non-exlusivity is just the norm. If you're ever asked to give exclusive distribution rights, as said by Makai, make sure you get paid for that (and do your best maths before).

question to people who have contracts with these distributors: Is the traffic worth it? Without getting too much into number if it's not permitted, are they sending enough buyers that their 70% (or so) cut is justified? I know that BFG is like a mammoth traffic-wise (mainly for casual and HOG) but what about the others?

I think it is definetely worth it, really you should be trying to get your game seen/bought in as many places as possible. You'll get customers from Distributor X who never would have bought your game who never would have bought it otherwise.
You should aim to pull revenue from as many places as possible.
And of course it depends on which distributors, as I hear Impulse gets more traffic than gamersgate, etc..

Yes, very much yes.
I haven't earned much from my game, but 75% of the money I've made has been from having the game on Impulse.

Recettear got onto Impulse, Steam, and Gamersgate, so I don't think they would force exclusivity.

Sorry if I'm derailing the thread but do you have to be logged on internet to play the games on Impulse? Also:I've just taken a look and I saw a lot of games that look great but that I didn't even know existed on PC. Why aren't PC games better marketed? (It's a rethorical question)

I'm 99% sure you can run games on Impulse when not connected to the internet. You just need to be connected for the inital verification and download when you first get the game. Also, if you're looking at buying SHMUP, buy it here: http://bit.ly/cuOkF7It's cheaper for you and I get ever close to them sending me a cheque
