aha. you have to be in-sync. the game needs to be such that the robot is usually awesome, except when the players actually cooperate, in which case it is super awesome.

What would make the robot unawesome?

I posted this on a another forum, but I think you guys would get a kick out of it too:

Soap Opera Tycoon:
Play as the Producer/Director/Writer of a soap opera production company. The goal is to capture the highest ratings in the Daytime TV genera. The player will hire actors/characters each with stats such as Likability, Attractiveness, and Respect. The player will also buy plot points to run on the characters eventually creating a web of intrigue and drama. Each episodes rating will be converted into advertizing revenue with which the player can buy better actors or more elaborate plot points.

The Audience is fickle. Focus groups and tabloids will inform the player about the ever chaining pop culture land scape. The player will need to add plot points, kill off characters, and introduce new ones to keep up with audience trends. Other Soap operas (AI controlled) compete with the player for ratings, and running the same plot points or similar characters will lead to audience fatigue.

Here are some Plot points:
X is secretly in love with Y
X wants to inherit Y's fortune
X married Y for money
X is the unknown love child of Y
X is dating Y to make Z jealous
X has incriminating evidence on Y
X Sabotages Y's car
X Saved Y from falling off a cliff
X took a bullet meant for Y
X feel guilty for horrible thing they did to Y
X goes to jail for Y's crimes
X has a secret drug habit

@Wilson Saunders  I like the idea!  You need to add the whole confusing family elements:
- X is dating Y, not knowing Y is X's sister
- X hurt Y's business deal, not knowing Y is X's father

How would the plot influence the gameplay? I'm thinking about making audience directly proportional to complexity of plot and inversely proportional to inconsistencies of the plot. Thus at each chapter you'd be compelled to make it more complex but being careful not to break logic and make someone its own father or something like that.

This is really funny lol

Making up the plot is the gameplay. I had in mind 6 different criteria of why people watch soap operas:
1) Schadenfreude: Boy am I glad I am not that guy.
2) Wish Fulfillment: I wish I lived in such a place.
3) Connection: That character is just like me/ who I want to be
4) Vicarious revenge: I really hate this character, I look forward to seeing them get what they deserve.
5) Imagination fuel: If I were in that situation here is what I would do.
6) Voyeurism: I like watching these characters bumble about not knowing what I know.

Each plot point and character would give the episode a value in each of these categories. The audience would consist of AI agents with preferences in each of these categories. If an episode meets the agent's preference stats that agent will remain loyal to your show or switch to it from a different one. Tabloid trends may sway large sections of the viewership.

For example the lottery jackpot has not been clamed in a few months and there is a 28 Million dollar jackpot everyone is looking at. Suddenly Wish fulfillment and Imagination fuel are now twice effective at drawing an audience.

Another example: a respectable public figure has been caught up in a sex scandal. Voyeurism and Schadenfreude become more effective.

A dungeon crawler where you don't get to control the adventurer. Instead you lay out the dungeon one room at a time (including treasure & monsters) and he proceeds according to his AI. You want him to explore, level up, find treasures and ultimately survive - but you don't get to directly control him.

This is the game I'm making for the October Challenge. Thoughts?

There better be a speed control so you don't have to watch him proceed at the same speed every time.

Also mixing up the AI so you can't just build the exact same dungeon every time.

A lot of the game's fun factor is going to be based on how the AI reacts to stuff, so if the AI is perfectly happy going down a straight corridor, it's not going to be very interesting to design dungeons for.
