The style is a product of the hardware though.

The style is heavily influenced by the hardware. I wouldn't call it a product though. Part of the challenge of older game development was capturing a particular look or effect in spite of the limitations of the hardware.

And as I noted, modern resolutions and display technology are not always appropriate for replicating the limitations of older systems. You have to choose which approach you want based on what manner of game you are trying to make.

Also, to simulate the horizontal "stretching" of those classic systems on CRT monitors a good resolution would be 260px x 180px. This would closely approximate the horizontal stretching when rendered full-screen.
