Howdy folks, Tetiro here. I finished university over a week ago and I've been looking for a job since. With no avail of course. I noticed I was doing this the wrong way and so created this topic.

What I should do is ask other game developer residents of the UK the best places to find jobs.

So to you UK residents, do you of any good places to find jobs? As I feel like I'm going round in circles.

I'd really appreciate the help

General things like get your CV together, get a portfolio of things you've worked on together to show potential employers.

Keep doing stuff in the meantime. It may or may not take time to get a job, but if it does, you don't want potential employers to hear about how you've just been sitting on your arse for weeks/months waiting to be given a job. If you're a programmer, keep programming. Take on a hobby project, just something small, but something that shows you're actively keeping your skills sharp and learning new things and having fun / already enjoying what they're going to pay you to do. Also it gives you something to talk about in interviews

If you're an artist, keep drawing/modelling/animating. You should already have a portfolio, but try to expand it. Try to tailor the portfolio for the jobs you are applying (so 3D models aren't so useful if you're applying to be a concept artist)

There is a "GamesIndustry Fair" attached to the eurogamer expo (http://www.eurogamer.net/expo/), which I went to a few years back when looking for a job. That was useful for talking to lots of people from the industry about jobs, what they were looking for etc. Only downside is it is at the end of September, so quite a way off still

There are other game developer conventions as well where companies often go to recruit people (though many are there just to promote their latest game, so don't make any assumptions). Even if it doesn't lead to a job, you'll meet people from inside the industry who can tell you what it is really like and give tips and hints on how to get hired

You can get some advice on getting a job in the industry from http://www.gamescareerguide.com, and also at http://www.gamedev.net/forum/101-breaking-into-the-industry/

Also check out the jobs boards at http://www.gamesindustry.biz, http://www.gamasutra.com and http://www.develop-online.net for an idea of what sort of things are available generally and in the UK and what employers are asking for / offering, and when you've got your portfolio sorted, start applying!

Not hiring just at the moment, but definitely interested in great portfolios for a short-list when we get back to hiring.

Fun fact: I got this job off of gumtree.com. That was 5 years ago though, but probably worth giving it a shot to see if there's any start-ups. I had a big-ass portfolio by the way, I'm a busy boy.

Also, get your ass to game dev meet-ups and talk to people. There's quite a number of folks who seem to have sorted out a job from such meet ups.

What sort of game dev meet-ups are there?

Depends how far you are willing to travel for meet ups, same goes for jobs. If you are willing to re-locate it will probably be easy to get a job.

GameDevNorth meetup in Chester is pretty busy and takes place once a month.

If you are on LinkedIn then sign up with every game dev group you can find. A lot of recruiters post jobs there, all levels. Twitter also has hashtags for game jobs. I can't say from the top of my head, but try something along the lines of #gamedevjob #gamejobs.

And probably the best advise, make a list of studios you want to work for and just apply. But don't just apply everywhere, it shows in the application. If you have a strong motivation for being at a certain studio, then it is more likely they will want to give you a chance.

NOT DIRECTLY GAME INDUSTRY RELATED BUT...

but im 19, and recently got a job at the BBC as a Audio Visual technician/engineer, the main thing i would say is get a solid CV together showing alot of relative information on previous jobs, now is your time to show off! build a game yourself, if theres no opportunity's out there yet, make an opportunity for yourself! also look for free work for a well known business/project, if you mention your active on the field this will no doubt impress future employers, the BBC loved the fact ive worked on a alot of high class jobs already (majority of them free) and obviously, Get yourself a great portfolio together!

best of luck.
