As far as Adobe programs go I prefer to do pixel work in Fireworks. It is built for making and animating on screen graphics. As far as other mac programs go I have tried pixen but it kept crashing on me. Photoshop does work well also and I use it a lot of the time just because I usually have it open for something else anyway, but I prefer Fireworks and for more complicated animations I'll usually switch over to it.

I tried Pixen for a while but it has a lot of stupid bugs and crashes. The UI can be counter-intuitive at times and more often than not the tool would inhibit me rather than support me.

I just use PdN now, I'm happy with it. As mentioned though, I am at a loss for previewing animations, which can be a pain for my workflow.

I assume you're on Windows? Graphics Gale Free Edition is very good, and it has great animation preview (I like it better than Photoshop's actually, since you can edit while it plays).

I'm aware of GG, sir... gg.

I run both OSX and Windows.
I'd have preferred to be able to pixel on OSX which is why I started using Pixen.
So, I fell back on to PdN with my Windows installation.
