if y'all weren't aware: nigh all of contemporary japanese culture is western stuff run through a weird filter
even the ghibli aesthetics of this zelda is 90% miyazaki copying moebius and studying european architecture
sry to break it 2 u
Nigh all of contemporary western culture is Asian stuff ran through a lame filter. Starting with any action film ever nevermind all the videogames, classical music and also modernist painting. Fashion, too. Sounds dumb? Go read your comment again.

case in point: amiga platformers and shooters are all europeans very consciously but bumblingly attempting to make games as cool as japanese console and arcade games

turrican is cool as fuck tho I would say that both cultures reference each other a great deal, especially in games and industry as a whole would be a shadow of itself if either decided to stand alone and only looked internally.

people keep saying this, but iunno. zelda was far from the first open world game and open world games have evolved/changed a lot in the intervening years since 1987. there are a lot of typical modern open world game mechanics in this, as well as a lot of quirkier ones, but i can't see a direct link (FUNNY VIDEOGAME PUN) back to the original LoZ.

I'm not saying they've intentionally gone back there, I'm just saying that this is the first Zelda game (since LoZ) where Link is not constricted to a specific pathway casting an illusion of an open world.

I suppose, but you could go almost anywhere in LoZ without prohibition.
Though, this Zelda you can fight the last fucking boss at the start. That makes LoZ look as linear as Ocarina of Time!

They actually dove into how BotW relates to the original LoZ at this year's Treehouse. I'd definitely say that the game looks like it's very spiritually in line with the sense of aimless wonder and adventure of the original. edit: forgot that this forum embeds video now lol
