May I recommend (for the users) noscript. Once you've enabled scripting on those few sites which you need it, you'll find how little you miss all the rest of the scripting around the web.

Would we lose anything (e.g. posts, accounts, beloved Samoan viruses) by doing so?

i think nothing, surely not posts nor accounts or avatars.
There's a "all boards to mybb" converter that works pretty well and SMF (our current one) is supported.

The only thing that need to be adapted or redesigned is of course the skin...
