@Skaz that planet is awesome! I think the outline one has more personality but somehow I like the outline-less one better.
For the characters, outlines are all about readability.
Thanks! I prefer the outline-less, too. For the space map, outlines aren't really necessary. Just a coherence problem if character are outlined. Couldn't you make the outline half-transparent and the best of both? Because I do feel the outline gives it more punch, but the non-outline looks better.
The problem summed up. For now I'll try sticking to no outlines, make backgrounds, and see if the thing is readable in motion. If not, back to outlines. Maybe coloured ones instead of pure black. The game itself must prevail on my artistic pride :p

If you try outlines again I would definitely give the coloured outlines a go - the point is to accentuate contrast, not to be a colour of its own right.

Just a coherence problem if character are outlined. that shouldn't really be a problem: people in general (probably "trained" by traditional animation?(less likely because of that inherent realistic = dead, cartoony = living thing proposed by mcloud)) don't necessarily expect foreground and background (or static/moving) objects to be in the same style anyway

If anything outlines tend to be associated with animated parts, and no outlines with static backgrounds, because of how traditional animation tended to "optimise" its budget.

feeling psychedelic or I don't know, maybe I could get a cyborg alien creature thing to absorb various forms of spores and plants, turning them into powers, and using these new abilities to get further into an ancient giant floating laputa ship-castle. that's cool too.

Not sure to understand your point. Is the shading is bad?

you should try not to just move color slider up but move towards the opposite color in your shading. Or remove it all together i think it would make it look better.

That's just an illusion - the contrast effect to be precise, and it's actually one of the key reasons outlines work as they do.

Sounds awesome. I would play/make that game. Neat plants too. Cool designs. Haven't checked out your devlog for a while, about to go there now...

Lately been obsessed with making something who's entire infrastructure and technology is biopunk/vegetation. Plants as abilities/weapons, etc.

Decided to improve my old enemy sprites, old ones to the left, new ones to the right. Nice! The new ones have loads more character. I'm not reading the bottom one's bow as well, though. It sort of blends with the new clothing color and makes me think he's wearing some very odd clown pants.

Hello everyone! It's been a long time since I posted anything on this forum, so it's great to come back and see what you're working on Here's a walking animation for a game we're making.
