I think the compo should be renamed GNP, to avoid sexism.
What's sexist about it? Do tell. I mean what's demeaning to women about that theme?

Nothing. I was making a joke at the whole "You can't say man or women, you must say person," thing. Plus a naked women is a lot better than a naked man in my humble opinion, so the choice should be there.

I just want to say to all the people voting for "Steampunk": You do realise that that is last year's fad, right? The steampunk backlash is already well-underway, and by the time we run a steampunk compo, it will be like running a lolcat compo or a Crocs compo.

What you just said was sounidie. If something is cool, it shouldn't matter if it's a fad or not. Well I don't anyway. Cyberpunk should be in there too.

Could be, but I'm still writing a steampunk novel. Tongue And I happen to like it, even if it isn't in style.

No.

Look at it this way: community of nerds makes a load of games about giant naked women. Oh, those stupid, perverted, lonely old nerdfolk.

Giant Naked Women it is not and, indeed, must not and cannot be.

GNM will rule supreme.

Steampunk was never good.

Uh, fad?  Last year?  The aesthetic has been quantifiable for almost 20 years now, and you're saying it's last year?  Maybe some weblogger only just discovered it last year and isn't weblogging about it this year?

As Kenneh suggested, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the cyberpunk aesthetic.

The steampunk fad has been over for more than a hundred years now.  There has been a minor resurgence over the last decade or so; I didn't notice anything in particular last year.

The term "steampunk" does need to die, because it isn't good.  Nineteenth century stylings need to not die, because they're awesome.

A steampunk competition would be cool if people actually focused on making games that might have been made in the Victorian era if they'd had computing technology available then.  Trying to get into the mindset of people of the time and think about what they would have made.  Difference Engine parlour games.  But what it actually would be is a bunch of platformers with vaguely steam-engine-inspired graphics.  Not interesting.

I totally agree.

And I think a cyberpunk compo would be really cool, but I think story/setting is huge for a compo like that, and we'd need more of us working in teams/pairs to properly make cyberpunk games.  Lots of cool ways to approach that though; I think Rez is cyberpunk in a way.  You never see the non-digital world that Rez's digital world exists in, but I definitely think it would be very dark and cyberpunk.

Victorian era-stylings were a fad? Last year? Cripes, I'm out of the loop. Assumed it always* was and always will be. Oh well, hardly changes things. I likes what I likes.

Well, "only faddish things are cool" doesn't follow from "fads are only cool before they're over". Furthermore, I never said that I only ever did cool things.

But I'll answer your question anyway! Being here is a fad! Just ask PIGScene!  :D :D :D

there's a difference between a theme and a fad. loads of games used steampunk last year. it's been locally overused, i.e. it was a fad. doesn't mean it wasn't in use before or whatever.

besides which, do you really think people will be able to make a large quantity of decent steampunk games? all that art takes effort you know... for me it's a pie-in-the-sky competition theme, suitable for a full production but not a short term project imo.
