I've skipped the October Ludum Dare but there comes Github Game Off compo - whole november to create a game loosely based on forking, branching, cloning, etc. https://github.com/blog/1303-github-game-offMight be fun.

I was kind of disappointed that it has to be web-based, though.

I'm participating in this, but I'm not quite sure what my game will end up being yet. It'll be some sort of roguelike, but I'm not sure how It will differ from other roguelikes. I'm thinking maybe have it in a modern big city setting, and you could choose classes like punk kid and gang member, but I'm not sure. Randomly generated cities would be easy to do, but most likely very boring. And I'm also not sure what the goal would be.

What about a world building game, where the world data is split amongst lots of files and the process of forking/pulling/etc allows a collaboration of the building of the world

and if the client that allows you to view the world just requires a github repo url, then you can trivially share worlds

Aw, thank you! I'm still a bit sad I was that close but didn't win, but your words make me happier. I don't think I deserved to win anyway.
