I recommend both Dwarf Fortress if your into fantasy, and Cavestory. Both are really great games in my book, and have already been linked to, but I'm just seconding them.

I don't see Fool's Errand here, which is a crying shame. It's one of the more brilliant puzzle things, though it's old and in B&W so who knows if you can run it on OS X out of the box. However, if you can play it it is worth it. Also, System's Twilight is similar, not as good unfortunately but still quite enjoyable. It's done by Andrew Plotkin who also has done a lot of good IF stuff So there you go, both are free and really, really difficult. Seriously, I never did beat either of them .

Mac vs PC A refurbished MacBook runs for about 800 bucks. OS X runs more efficiently than Windows, is prettier and is quite secure, in general. Mine can run most indie-type games, and I use it for all my development stuff. Plus it runs Mathematica and my LaTeX editor, so I can use it for all of my math-related work. So unless you really need to play the latest brown and gray World War II shooter where everything spins, an Apple is an excellent choice.

(Just to second the post above)
I received an old mac laptop that the only things that were upgraded were from g3 to g4, and 10gigs to 40gigs late summer. This thing originally came with Macintosh 9 mind you. With the exception of running newer games, and those designed only for windows, which I can play on my PC anyway, I do everything on my mac. If you aren't too main stream (which I doubt many here are) you can get programs to do everything windows can do for free, and most of the time more efficient then windows counterparts. Macs work great for doing anything and everything but play games that aren't simply made for macs (which if you look at the number of newer games, is decreasing.)

Besides, the MacBook Pros can run those same brown and grey WWII shooters at similar (if not greater) speeds to the full-sized windows boxes of most people in this community (going on the various things I've heard said regarding ability or lack thereof to run certain games, especially TF2).

The best mac game I ever played was EV Nova, an incredible space rpg/sandbox/trading game. I'm not really sure if it qualifies as indie or free, but I hope someone else has played it and can back me up in stating that its freaking incredible.
Aside from that, I have no idea, I haven't owned a mac in years, so all of my mac reccomendations are gonna be at least 8 or 9 years old, and therefore not really 'indie'.

You can try Black Shades from Wolfire. I had a lot a fun time with it a few years ago.

EV Nova is a great game by one of the great Shareware developers for the Mac. It's the only EV game to work on OS X and Windows, but it's not a free game. The registration fee is, if I recall, $30.
