Gosh darn kids on the "foromz" these days goin' on about fish and frogs. In my days you would just drive to their house and give them a good smack on the back of the head, teach'em some manners. But now fish and frogs are free to do whatever. Shame, I tell you.

You tell Phil Fish to keep his private twitters in the shower, no one wants to hear him tweet in the middle of that.

the real phil fish died in a motorcycle accident in 1966. he has since been portrayed by a large variety of actors assuming his identity, including but not limited to val kilmer, kirk and michael douglas (who are actually the same person btw), michael cera, jason schwartzman, adrien brody, ron paul and paul mccartney.

fish are not aware of their pain the only reason they respond to it is because of instinct
ya no, I really really really wish this was true, but that's not what the weight of evidence suggest basic summary: 1. they have the infrastructure that is needed to experience pain (nociceptors & central nervous system) 2. they display behavior that is strongly indicative of subjective pain: for example if their lips are hurting but aren't damaged (in experiments: injected with bee poison and acetic acid) they try to scratch the lip, loose their apatite, rock back and forth, display apathetic behavior etc. Things that don't make any sense in terms of instinctive behavior. But if given morphine, their behavior returns to normal again, showing that their bodies were fully functional all along Sneddon L, Braithwaite V & Gentle M, 2003. Do fishes have nociceptors? Evidence for the evolution of a vertebrate sensory system. Proceedings of the Royal Society of London B 270, 1115-1121.Sneddon L, 2003. The evidence for pain in fish: the use of morphine as an analgesic. Applied Animal Behaviour Science 83, 153-162.Reilly S, Quinn J, Cossins A & Sneddon L, 2008. i think the blanket use of the instinct term is way too reductionist and esentially turns non intelligent creatures into functionally robots

people love to confuse intelligence with the ability to more generally have feelings and experiences
except when it comes to humans, where we generally recognize (these days, mind you) that infants (that are much dumber than fish) can experience all kinds of emotions
