What are the best items for you to pick up in what adventure game. The game doesn't have to be good, but the item should be. My list is rather short, though.
1: A ladder from Space Quest II (ouch). 2: A dog in Monkey Island 2. 3: A monkey named Guybrush in The Longest Journey.
What's on your list?

I'd have to go with either:
- the classic rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle from Monkey Island 1 or - Murray, the talking skull from Curse of Monkey Island

Cave Story. Also horribly broken link is horrible. Those quotation marks break the link you are trying to post.

I liked the sprouter in Grim Fandango. And the body detecting thing in Five Days a Stranger.
And if text adventures are allowed, then Anchorhead has an umbrella - that keeps you dry and does nothing else. It's insane.

Spit-encrusted paper covered in lyrics from a song sung by my dead parents when I was knocked out falling over trying to climb a tree...
I mean, that's something that you get everyday right?

The animation of Guybrush sliding the ramrod down his pants at the beginning of The Curse of Monkey Island comes to mind reading this thread. Aside from that there's the curiously diamond-tipped rusty bent nail from the relatively unknown Duzz Quest, and of course the crowbar. I always look forward to the inevitable moment where you pick up a crowbar in an adventure game. I just got a crowbar in Scratches a few hours ago, in fact. Oh, and the skull flail from Full Throttle. Man that was badass!
