THE COMIC IS DONE!  READ THIS:  Each page is credited to its author, as well as link to any website of their choosing (usually this is a portfolio website, or a blog, or whatever.)  Please PM me if you want a website linked to on your page.  Also, if you wish to change the name your page is credited to also include that in the PM.  Thanks!

What's a comicompo?
It's a comic by the community.  Everyone involved draws one page of the comic based only on the previous.  The entire comic is later assembled into a masterpiece.  Check out the last comicompo (http://kpulv.com/comicompo2/) to see what kind of chaos ensues from this creation process.

How do I sign up?
Sign up's at this very moment are CLOSED.  There have been a few drop outs, and I want to fill the comics out to as close to 20 pages as I can.  If you have interest in being throw into the comic at this point in a random position, then SEND ME A PM STATING SUCH I will not be checking the thread for interest.  Also note that if you send me a PM saying you want to be in the comic, your turn may come up very soon.

Anyone can participate, and everyone is invited to participate.  It's not about artistic talent, but rather people of all types in the community coming together to create something amazing (http://kpulv.com/comicompo2/).

What do I do after signing up?
Pay attention to this thread.  After the order of the comic is announced it'll be up to you to make sure you don't drop the ball when it comes time to do your page.  You'll be getting a PRIVATE MESSAGE from me on this forum when your time comes.  The message will contain the page before yours.  Your job is to make a new page of the comic based only from that previous page.  When you're finished, send your page back to me and the comic continues.

The order of the comic is NOT the order you sign up in.  It is completely randomized after the sign ups are complete.  So pay attention to that order once it's announced.

What are the rules?

• You have 5 days to complete your comic page
• You can pass your turn a single time, but please do this as soon as your turn arrives.  This will change your position in the queue.  If you foresee a scheduling issue well before your time arrives, it's not a problem to move you around without counting that as your passed turn.
• In the interest of time, if your 5 days expires and you don't respond at all, we will assume that you are dead and you are booted from the comic.
• If you have already passed your turn, and you fail to complete your page on your 2nd chance then you are booted from the comic.
• Finish your page, or else.  Don't send me uncompleted pages at the deadline.
• The image must be at least 612px x 792px in size, and maintain a 8.5 x 11 aspect ratio.

What are some other tips?  (Not so much rules.)

• Don't start on a page that is out of the scope of what you can do in 5 days.  If you're planning on taking 3 days just to ink your page, you're probably doing it wrong.
• The intention of the comic is to make a continuous story from page to page, so try to keep the narrative going.  Remember, the person after you is only going to see YOUR PAGE, so try to make sure they have at least some idea what's going on.
• Be careful about making a completely off the chart wacky page that has absolutely nothing to do with the previous in any way.  It tends to break the narrative, and some people don't enjoy that too much.
• That being said, nothing is too crazy or off limits for the comic, but it would be appreciated if the narrative wasn't completely severed by a single page this time around.
• If you don't have a scanner, maybe you shouldn't draw your comic on paper and just start digitally.
• If you can't draw, who cares.
• Pay attention to where you are in the queue and get ready to start your page when it's time
• Try not to change your forum name into something completely different or crazy if you're going to participate, because that's how I'm keeping track of who you are.

THE PLAN
Comicompo 3 is going to be the MULTI-COMIC FRENZY.  Due to the immense popularity of last year's comic, this year the sign ups will be split up into different leagues.  Each league is responsible for one comic.  The ultimate goal is to have a bunch of smaller comics around 15 to 20 pages each, depending on the amount of sign ups it gets.  This will ensure that it doesn't take 10 months to complete the comic.

Other than that, this comic is going to be run the same way the previous two have.

Now, when it comes to a theme, that's a question for you guys.  Would you rather have a common plot line or theme to kick off each comic, or would you rather entrust it into the hands of whoever gets the first page?

I think we all can put something out after a few hours... not a finished page, but enough for the next guy to get moving.  Now that I'm working again, though, even to get a few hours in I had better get my turn on a weekend.  Uh... and a weekend where I'm not busy.

What if the system worked where Xerus would contact the next person in line, and they had 24 hours to respond saying they would want to start and have enough time over the next few days to finish something for the next guy.  If that person doesn't have enough time, or doesn't sign into TIGS at all, no hard feelings it will be your turn later on.

Question: How will you decide which "league" to put someone in? Is it random? Is it based on "skill"? Is it voluntary? Do we fight over it? Do you accept bribes? Is it rigged? Astrology? Magic Eight Ball? Ground Hog? Dowsing rod? Three sided coin flip? Mersenne twister? Quantum noise? Gut feeling? Game show? Reality TV? Trial and error? Intelligence quotient? Focus groups? Blindfold darts? Tournament? Peer review? Polls? Post count? Kevin Bacon number? Age? Credit score? Ethnicity? Gross income? Body mass? Number of years of professional experience? Karma? Internal politics? Enthusiasm of signup?

As for whos on what comic, I imagine it would be random draw.  Maybe some great artists (subjective?) could be seeded so that they dont all end up in the same league.  Up to Kyle I suppose.

Anyway, if we start with 3 separate premises, then its just 3 simultaneous comicompos, no? If there's nothing tying them together, then it's not so much "comicompo 3" as "comicompo 3-4-and-5". Not that it really matters, because they'll all turn out great and everybody wins regardless. Hooray for art!

I used the colors that someone else had picked. He's reddish orange, yes. I think it looks better than blood red or something like that, but feel free to experiment with the colors.

I forgot I was in this for about a month and just remembered and checked the thread....

I got a tricky page that I couldn't really art my way through (my head's been in 3D math and engine architecting all month), so I had to write my way through to something I could handle instead.  I've written and storyboarded the layout for a 7 panel page that I'm happy with.  The reason for this post though is I just wanted to say I'll be right down to the wire finishing it.  I think it'll be worth it though.  :eyebrows:

I'd prefer that we waited until all teams are done and released the comics all at once.

Also, each comic needs a cover.

If Xerus deems my skills sufficient, and if it means I get to see the green monkeys comic before the other animals are done, then I volunteer to do the cover for the green monkeys.

Actually next comicompo (there will be a comicompo 4, right?) should have some gimmicks like that, i mean

A reversal comic (from the ending to the begining)

A explosion comic (starts in the middle and a group works normally while another goes to the begining of the comic)

And maybe that old sugestion of everything being a trilogy (the last player reads the first page of another and try to tie both histories) (but that wouldn't work well with the other ideas i think, since the endings would come almost randomly) maybe it would end up beign a circular comic (since the ending of the first would be tied to the begining of the last)

(the perfect order would be Explosion (tied to the ending of), reversal (tied to the begining of), and normal (tied to the ending or begining or hell, midlle of), Explosion)

Another suggestion would be to let people see 2 previous pages instead of just 1. the story will still get pretty freaky, but it might turn out better  :shrug2:

What if we had a tree so it would have diverging stories? Sure it would be really annoying to see ALL of the pages. An advantage would be as the comic goes on more and more people will be working on it at once.

If I get shaun's page and there's no other names under mine, I'm treating it like it's the last page unless I'm told otherwise by the wise and powerful comicompo gods

The day I got my page my transmission died. The next day my brother in law went into the hospital. As soon as I turned in my page, everything did a 180. My car is currently at the dealer getting a new transmission, clutch, belts and other work thanks to some unexpected cash and my brother in law's condition went from scary to no big deal overnight.

Perhaps the compo should come with a warning or something. "Participate at your own risk."

I'd still participate, it was worth it.

It looks like every comic will be finished around the time where I'm going on a 2 week trip with my family, so there might be a small delay if that does sync up.  Hopefully the curse does not affect me.  (Last time the comic ended at the IGF deadline :I)

I'm just surprised curses can be this easy to start. You'd think it would take more than a comic compo, like insulting a one-eyed gypsy woman or opening an ancient tomb or something.

I think its a smaller sub-curse of the global project curse.  Every time I have made a medium to large scale game, something terrible happens right towards the end of it.  At the end of Bonesaw, the entire source .mfa was getting corrupted to shit and I had to scramble into my back ups and somehow cut and paste a new .mfa with the entire game, from the back ups that worked.  During college I was making an animation for a class, and during the last week of working on it (before it was due) my motherboard shit the bed.  I've had hard drive failures, corrupting files, crashes, and car accidents all try to fuck up my projects near the end.  Fucking ridiculous.

The problem with Bonesaw wasn't the curse, it was just MMF. :laughter:
