I'm totally thinking of doing this one. We could collab, I mostly just want to do NES-style success splash screens haha.Or... WE COULD COMPETE!! I would love to collab with you, since you are awesome. BUT my idea for the game is completely different, heh. COMPETE WE SHALL! Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH Post by: J. R. Hill on June 29, 2010, 11:55:13 PM I changed my idea for the game completely too!
Part 1: Hit the target (it gets harder and takes different forms as you go) or you WON'T TOUCH THE CAT BUT SOMETHING ELSE ENTIRELY!! (http://timeforcute.com/cute/2010/06/mockup.png) Part 2: You are near the cat, but don't let your nerves get the best of you! You have to calm down, stop shaking, and hope to hit a part of the cat that is pleasing to your senses!! [NO IMAGE YET] Part 3: CONGRATULACIONS YOU ARE NECO TOUCH!!! [NO IMAGE YET] P.S. I'll do it in Flashpunk at double resolution probably. Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH Post by: Squirrelsquid on June 30, 2010, 12:01:48 AM I luv cats!

Well, I have to agree that I wouldn't want to touch most of that stuff either haha. About 30% of that stuff will make it into the game. Does this mean that you finish the game when you neco touch the cat?? I'm particularly interested what happens to a cat which has been successfully touched. Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH Post by: J. R. Hill on July 18, 2010, 02:09:19 PM You get a points then you will TOUCH additional NECO!!

what do?? Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH (first build*) Post by: J. R. Hill on July 25, 2010, 09:28:32 PM Yeah, that build doesn't do anything yet lol. The current build I'm working on has full cat-touching capabilities, but I screwed something up with the cursor-target collision detection so the current build isn't uploaded yet since it just crashes when you click the mouse. God-willing I'll have a "playable" build tonight. After I get the collision detection working, adding all the other features will be a breeze.
Other features: -enemies -moving targets -weird-shaped targets -alterable cursor directions -working points system -achievements(?) Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH (first build*) Post by: J. R. I'd love to have the target also moving, as the game gets harder, or an animation that keep changing the target size and color, to confuse the player...
well done :handmetalL: ;) Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH (now "playable") Post by: Martin 2BAM on July 26, 2010, 09:40:39 AM Also this: (http://timeforcute.com/cute/2010/07/pigbutt.png) I was just going to mention that :eyebrows: Nothing like failing to touch a cat because of a shoving a finger up a pig's ass :handthumbsupL: It's weird, polished and fun, but I think you should focus on making it challenging. Some ideas: -Speeding up the cross -Changing the color of the cross in constant intervals (an decreasing those intervals) -Some sort of score that gets reset when failing (And back to "easy slow mode") -Moving the target (as mentioned) -All of the above :) Keep it up! Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH (now "playable") Post by: J. R. Hill on July 26, 2010, 11:31:45 AM Thanks guys for the encouragement! I don't know where y'all are getting "polished" from, cause to me it feels buggy as heck.
Most of those I was planning to do, although changing the colors of the cross at intervals I hadn't thought of, and also makes me think about changing the colors of the target too. Anyway the rest of those will likely get implemented in the next few days. I'm also going to have the target sections move independently once the difficulty ramps up. After I get the gameplay down pat I'll add a title screen, character selection, options, etc. I also gotta play more of your guys' demos and contribute some critique too haha. Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH (now "playable") Post by: LiquidAsh on July 26, 2010, 12:07:20 PM Haha, fun little game. I like the game-show feel (and music).
Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH (now "playable") Post by: J. R. Hill on July 26, 2010, 12:11:56 PM Thanks! Probably going to change it out later, but I felt like it wasn't complete without some goofy music.
Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH (first build*) Post by: agj on July 26, 2010, 12:28:04 PM I suggest you make the current color more explicit (for instance, by changing the color of the cat), and not make the upper portion bulls-eye-shaped, because then you just feel compelled to hit the center rather than a particular color.
The guy's expression deserves to be stronger when he fails! But I'm really liking this. :) Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH (now "playable") Post by: Inanimate on July 26, 2010, 12:40:41 PM I really like this. Sometimes I think I get lucky, or accidentally abused a glitch, since I got a huge streak of yellows, so I just had to click as fast as I wanted to.
Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH (now "playable") Post by: Melly on July 26, 2010, 04:48:02 PM So delightful. :-*
Also (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/511152/necoTouchShot1.png) I should have touched the neco. :( Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH (now "playable") Post by: J. R. Hill on July 26, 2010, 07:05:53 PM Yeah, for some reason I keep goofing up the detection, I just did a 1x1 hitbox on the center of the cursor and a pixelmask for the different sections of the target... Still, it's been pretty goofy.
Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH (now "playable") Post by: J. R. Hill on July 26, 2010, 10:15:04 PM Oh lol it's cause I was updating the movement on the same frame as the input. Now it's working much better.
Since the cross will be movable with the arrow keys (or wasd I guess) would you guys prefer the "stop" button to be z/x/c/y/space/mouse button or all of the above? Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH (now "playable") Post by: J. R. Hill on July 27, 2010, 12:47:16 AM THIRD BUILD (http://timeforcute.com/cute/2010/07/NECOTOUCH2.swf)

Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [~DEMO~] Post by: J. R. Hill on July 27, 2010, 05:36:35 PM Yeah I'm definitely getting the same error when it gets up to the x-y part, not sure what's causing it but I've probably messed up y-coordinates or something.
The target will definitely move... :wizard: Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [~DEMO~] Post by: Martin 2BAM on July 27, 2010, 06:59:48 PM Niiiiiiice :) Looking good man
Check for divisions by zero, that in AS3 return NaN (or something) that's considered a Boolean false :) Maybe it's that. You should give it a rest on the cross that says "no directional controls" after a couple of plays, it's kind of distracting. Cheers Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [~DEMO~] Post by: J. R. Hill on July 27, 2010, 07:04:22 PM It's supposed to go away after 3 rounds, but I guess it'd probably be better to have it pop up as a tooltip or something. Seemed like it clashed the second I put it in but was too lazy to change it last night haha.
Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [~DEMO~] Post by: miconazole on July 29, 2010, 01:03:43 AM So I finally remembered to play this and it is *~pretty classy~*. I think your game is one of the titles that is inherently funny just by being a game and you've certainly run with it very well :D

Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [Almost Done Version] Post by: tzachs on August 07, 2010, 05:43:34 AM At first I played it and didn't understand what to do.
Then I cam back and read all the pages, played again and had a great fun! What I'm saying is you probably should add instructions before playing, I didn't even notice that the cross changes color, but I noticed that the cat changes color, so I tried to pick the target according to the cat and that didn't work so well... I also didn't know that you can use the arrows, that adds also to the fun. Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [Almost Done Version] Post by: J. R. Hill on August 07, 2010, 08:57:00 AM FINAL BUILD! Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [Finished] Post by: dontkickpenguins on August 07, 2010, 10:47:50 AM I'm liking this! It's great fun, and the music really fits the game. However, it can be a bit unclear what to do at the start. I had a younger brother play it and he couldn't get the hang of until I pointed out that the cross changed colour to him. It's probably because the target starts off looking like a bullseye which to most people means "hit the middle!". Although it's probably a bit late to do something about that.
Still, it's awesome. Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [Finished] Post by: PsySal on August 07, 2010, 12:38:20 PM Perfect, awesome. Hahahahahahah! I'm glad I waited until you were totally done with this to play it. =) The overall effect when you manage to touch the cat is priceless... =) Made my day!

Yeah, I know that's an issue... I put instructions on the webpage below the game that says match colors, but I know I rarely read those when I'm playing games, lol.Still, it's awesome. PsySal: Phew! I'm hoping everyone who plays this game gets at least a few laughs out of it. Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [Finished] Post by: SirNiko on August 07, 2010, 07:48:22 PM Love it! Very fun, and the pixel art is fantastic!
The color changing target is a bit confusing at first. Perhaps you could make the matching part of the target flash to push the player to hit that? Just for the first few rounds until they realize the colors need to match. It took me several goes before I realized what I was doing wrong when the target color changed the first time. The first time through, I felt like the target score was too high, as the game dragged on a long time. The game really doesn't have any depth to it, so it starts to drag pretty soon. I feel like the player should have a limited number of Necos, and you go for the high score by touching as many in a row as possible. Alternately have a "Story" mode that is basically the game you have right now. I'd love for there to be an ending. A one-page splash screen detailing how the character's life has been touched by the Neco would be a great outro. As soon as the yellow target starts to move, the game gets REALLY hard. I feel like the purple target should move first, since it is the easiest to hit even when moving, then the red target moves second. The yellow moving would be the last and hardest objective to hit. Other than that, it's a solid, short time waster! I wouldn't play it regularly, but it's something I'd share with a bunch of people for a few quick laughs. The very concept of attempting to touch a Neco and failing is amusing. Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [Finished] Post by: J. R. Hill on August 07, 2010, 09:06:46 PM lol, man, you don't have to tell me it's repetitive, I've been playing this thing for nearly a month now. :biglaff: I never really intended for it to be much more than a time-waster, so aside from any bug fixes I'm just going to leave it as-is and move on to other projects.
Plus the code is pretty horrendous since I hadn't used AS3 or FP before I started. There's a lot of redundant code that I'd have to fix first before I could really start to upgrade it. Also: The points get massive bonuses as you get higher so it's not as far a ride to 1 million as it might seem at first. But yeah the win screen is pretty underwhelming, especially considering my original idea for the win screen was pretty much what inspired the entire game. I might add those in later when I'm feeling artsy, but for now it's on the backburner. Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [Finished] Post by: J. R. Hill on August 07, 2010, 09:17:33 PM P.S. I never said it was going to be easy to NECO TOUCH. 8)
Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [Finished] Post by: Melly on August 08, 2010, 01:00:20 AM An amusing little time waster indeed. I'd probably make the cursor a bit bigger to make the change in colors more evident, and add an image like the ones you have detailing that you should match colors.
Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [Finished] Post by: Curseman on August 08, 2010, 03:00:17 AM Pretty good, other than the color matching aspect not being very clear.
I like how clumsy and uncontrollable it gets towards the end. I think my favorite part is the old guy's facial expression when you make a mistake. Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [Finished] Post by: J. R. Hill on August 08, 2010, 03:59:15 AM Okay, consensus is that it's not clear enough about the color-matching so
Thanks for all the feedback guys! Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [FINISHED] + small fixes Post by: J. R. Hill on August 08, 2010, 05:25:12 PM Actually, I've decided the game isn't complete enough for me to be satisfied with it, so in a few weeks I might return and do proper winning and losing screens.
Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [FINISHED] + small fixes Post by: J. R. Hill on August 09, 2010, 01:38:14 PM Okay, so my dad was playing this and said after a while the cursor turned gray and red etc. Has anyone else experienced this? I can't even imagine what would cause it since there are only the three color values available. Anyone else get this?
Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [FINISHED] + small fixes Post by: Dugan on August 10, 2010, 12:22:20 AM This is good fun! - and that music is pure cheese ;D
(haven't spotted the grey cursor issue you mentioned yet) Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [FINISHED] + small fixes Post by: Flimgoblin on August 13, 2010, 01:49:22 PM According to this:
http://tinycartridge.com/post/942873021/indie-games-inspired-by-famicase-carts The guy who did the original famicase art played this game and posted here: http://olulu.jugem.jp/?eid=354 Anyone who can read japanese able to confirm? Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [FINISHED] + small fixes Post by: J. R. Hill on August 13, 2010, 06:23:41 PM lol yes, I sent an email to them. He says he got bored of it after about 5 minutes but that he's happy it was made. (Also that it didn't match his original intentions for the game, which is true)
I left another comment telling him about JaJitsu's game cause it's better lol. Good find! Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [FINISHED] + small fixes Post by: Flimgoblin on August 14, 2010, 06:15:57 AM Cool, it's nice to see these things go full circle :)
I don't expect whoever did the musical one I've based my game on imagined flowers and bees either tbh ;) Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [FINISHED] + small fixes Post by: SirNiko on August 14, 2010, 07:41:59 AM What exactly DID he expect his game to be like?
Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [FINISHED] + small fixes Post by: J. R. Hill on August 14, 2010, 10:31:47 AM Cat education software, you would get points based on how you interact with the cat. Petting its head would get you x points, scratching its chin would get you y points etc.
Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [FINISHED] + small fixes Post by: Monkeylover on August 14, 2010, 01:33:55 PM Great game!
It really made me laugh - which i think was the intension :) I especially liked the music, did you make it yourself? Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [FINISHED] + small fixes Post by: J. R. Hill on August 14, 2010, 01:43:00 PM Nah, it's a song by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass called Mexican Shuffle. Old song, but you've probably heard other songs by him like Spanish Flea.
I am totally amazed that I've gotten any response at all on this game, but maybe that's because I don't really like playing whatever this genre is, lol. Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [FINISHED] + small fixes Post by: Monkeylover on August 15, 2010, 09:39:28 AM My god, that is some funny music.. :-*
Thanks JR Hill.. I will go eat tacos now... :handforkL::eyebrows::handknifeR: Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [FINISHED] + small fixes Post by: Squiggly_P on August 15, 2010, 11:50:56 AM This is great. I get frustrated when everything starts moving fast, but it's definitely a good way to kill a few minutes. And yeah, that music is awesome.
Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [FINISHED] + small fixes Post by: J. R. Hill on August 15, 2010, 01:46:18 PM After I adjusted the way the scoring works I can't beat it anymore lol.
I think I'm gonna re-polish it a few weeks after the competition ends. Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [FINISHED] + small fixes Post by: J. R. Hill on August 18, 2010, 06:30:57 AM Cool, I got a mention (http://www.bytejacker.com/blog/neco-touch-the-best-game-about-cat-poking-youll-play-all-day) on Bytejacker too!
I feel like a legit indie now. Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [FINISHED] + small fixes Post by: Dook on August 18, 2010, 11:28:18 AM This game cracks me up.
:handpointR: :tiger: mew Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [FINISHED] + small fixes Post by: J. R. Hill on August 18, 2010, 02:40:54 PM Thanks, it's officially "humorware."
Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [FINISHED] + small fixes Post by: Oddball on August 21, 2010, 10:32:33 AM Great choice of music. The game is really funny. I found I couldn't tell what colour the cross was when it was moving fast and that small target is impossible to hit whilst it's whizzing around. Good work.
Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [FINISHED] + small fixes Post by: Soulliard on August 24, 2010, 05:20:59 PM The old guy's expressions are priceless.
This is a fun little minigame. The only thing that I thought was odd was that the menu had different controls from the game, and that the controls were never listed anywhere. Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [FINISHED] + small fixes Post by: J. R. Hill on August 24, 2010, 07:25:18 PM The menu and game both use arrow keys and any of the following: space, z, x, c, for input.
Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [FINISHED] + small fixes Post by: Tanner on August 24, 2010, 07:29:03 PM this is the only game i voted for
so dang indie Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [FINISHED] + small fixes Post by: Soulliard on August 24, 2010, 09:54:39 PM The menu and game both use arrow keys and any of the following: space, z, x, c, for input. Oh. Well, I used the mouse. :PTitle: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [FINISHED] + small fixes Post by: J. R. Hill on August 25, 2010, 01:13:18 AM Oh right, I didn't make the mouse work on the menu screen yet. :shrug2:
@ Tanner : You have chosen wisely. Title: Re: [AGBIC] NECO TOUCH [FINISHED] + small fixes Post by: guille on August 31, 2010, 08:02:05 AM haha nice game, I liked how you kept varying things a little to not make the game repetitive. The graphics are charming too. Good job! :)
