(http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj200/increpatio/Screenshot2010-07-03at185449.png) getting collision working properly is proving very awkward. Collision is still a little flaky, but have a start at it anyway : S Title: Re: [AGBIC] Whale of noise Post by: Jonathan Whiting on July 03, 2010, 02:30:18 PM Particle whale is intriguing.

Making the environment more interesting. Hoping I'll have the main game sketched out and playable in full by tonight. Any feedback on the art/colour scheme welcome. Title: Re: [AGBIC] Whale of noise Post by: Inanimate on July 04, 2010, 03:38:16 AM That already looks awesome, but a question: will everything 'wiggle' like the static on a TV? Because that would be even more beautiful.
Title: Re: [AGBIC] Whale of noise Post by: JMickle on July 04, 2010, 03:49:12 AM The whale is rather hard to read against that background, but I like the idea behind it.
Title: Re: [AGBIC] Whale of noise Post by: increpare on July 04, 2010, 03:59:26 AM The whale is rather hard to read against that background, but I like the idea behind it. The whale is quite flickery when seen in-game, so there's no real danger of that. (The issue being more that it makes everything else look a little boring and unanimated by comparison if anything). That already looks awesome, but a question: will everything 'wiggle' like the static on a TV? Because that would be even more beautiful. I tried something like that out, and found it really distracting (for the whole screen to be alternating between two variations).Title: Re: [AGBIC] Whale of noise Post by: Mr. Yes on July 04, 2010, 04:57:59 AM That looks so cool. I really like those colors.
Title: Re: [AGBIC] Whale of noise Post by: Jonathan Whiting on July 04, 2010, 05:33:01 AM Any feedback on the art/colour scheme welcome. I like it, but I'm not sure I can read it. The orange/brown/green bits are presumably rocks/landmass, but it's not clear if the upper section is sky or ocean (it's a very sky blue, but the boundary seems a little too indistinct to fit. Maybe add "the end" or something like that? Because I waited on that white screen for a bit. Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: Lord Tim on July 04, 2010, 03:33:27 PM Awesome game, but the sound cut out once I got to #8.

I'm running the latest build of Chrome on Win Xp.
Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: JMickle on July 04, 2010, 03:37:10 PM it happens when you press a number you don't have. I'm on chrome on XP, and when i first played i got the first number and tried out others but the sound cut out, so I restarted and only pressed the ones i had until i pressed zero right near the end, and the sound cut out again. I think i pressed zero once again to get it back or something.
Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: increpare on July 04, 2010, 03:39:01 PM oh, pressing 'zero' toggles sound : P

It's really cool that I have nothing to say about it :D Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: Taylor on July 04, 2010, 03:59:57 PM That’s really great. Though, I also sat on the white end screen for a while. Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: increpare on July 04, 2010, 04:01:12 PM sound-fixed version should be up now : )
'Tis a pretty good game, but it doesnt really have a lot to do with the cover. There's a whale (a whale made of noisy particles), and it makes noises (reasonably granular noises). Let me quote from the guidelines:Use the cart primarily as a source of inspiration. You do not need to tie yourself to any elements of the cart (like title, art style or any descriptions), and are in fact encouraged to take it in an original path. Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: Inanimate on July 04, 2010, 05:23:44 PM Well that was an interesting experience.
Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: h_double on July 04, 2010, 05:28:25 PM This is neat, I especially like the sound, and how the visuals get more abstract/colorful near the end.
It might be cool to have some bits where you're swept along by the water and have to figure out multi-note songs to navigate the passageway. Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: Cheater‽ on July 04, 2010, 05:39:32 PM Cool game, increpare. :handthumbsupL: :handthumbsupL:

Plan on doing another cart? Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: agj on July 04, 2010, 08:32:50 PM Very nice! Reminded me a fair bit of Dotstream's Formation mode (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acAWkf8NECc#t=3m06s).
Very cool, although for some reason the sound didn't work (I assumed there was sound I was missing out on :-\) really? : SWhat browser/os are you running? Sound's really low for me; maybe that was the problem? Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: tipp on July 04, 2010, 08:59:09 PM Wow, that was really cool, actually. Nothing like the box art, though.
Edit: Oh, I don't really care if it was nothing like the box art, I think it's really neat the way it is! :) Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: MaloEspada on July 04, 2010, 09:14:40 PM I agree that it was cool and while the mechanic seemed very interesting at first, I must admit I expected a lot more. Instead of just stretching vertically, I thought you were going for custom shapes or something.
Oh well, it was nice. Gotta say that atmosphere and sound were pretty cool too. Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: Jonathan Whiting on July 04, 2010, 11:52:51 PM It kind of felt like the mechanic could have been stretched to some more interesting interaction. Having said that I've no idea how to do so, so maybe it's just good as the attractive mood piece that it is.
I particularly like the way that failed guesses contributed to the 'soundtrack'. Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: Pishtaco on July 04, 2010, 11:56:34 PM I like how you end up feeling around for the right note.

Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: György Straub on July 05, 2010, 12:23:48 AM I could somehow totally see you doing this one.=)
Really cool concept with awesome touches (particle whale and singing mechanism FTW) and, as others said, lightning fast. Congrats!=) Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: increpare on July 05, 2010, 12:37:47 AM Thanks for the comments, guys.

Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: Arucard on July 05, 2010, 02:11:24 AM Pretty interesting, I also thought the shapes could be worked out a little more. Or maybe a couple places making you switch between different notes directly in a single passage. But has a good atmospheric feel, and sound.
Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: Hangedman on July 05, 2010, 03:30:09 AM Enough about the 'not looking like the cart', people.
Sound works now. Very cool stuff! Although I didn't realize you could get 'killed' until I tried to hurry through it and kept getting kicked back to checkpoints. Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: increpare on July 05, 2010, 03:36:22 AM Sound works now. Very cool stuff! Although I didn't realize you could get 'killed' until I tried to hurry through it and kept getting kicked back to checkpoints. I had to introduce dying to get around some of the dodgier collision issues (to stop people flying through stuff).Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: Mikademus on July 05, 2010, 05:19:29 AM Nice and quick job! Creative interpretation of the box art!
It lacked surprise factor though, after the third upgrade I knew that all upgrades would just be increased distances, more variety of singing forms would have pushed it another dimension. Also, the collision bugs quite a bit with frequent false positives. Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: Dugan on July 05, 2010, 05:46:07 AM great short game - and not at all what I was expecting after seeing the screenshots (not boxart, as boxes in the 80s rarely looked like the actual games anyway) in a totally good way :)
Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: Tacocat on July 05, 2010, 06:39:45 AM It's not challenging, the art isn't very good, it's short..just really nothing much to say about this other than that it is a dull and completely forgettable game
Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: oyog on July 05, 2010, 08:11:40 AM God what a trip.
Wonder if I can get my body to pass through walls while I'm singing too. Time to start practicing. Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: azraelee on July 05, 2010, 08:55:00 AM wow man, beautiful, absolutely amazing :-* :-*
Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [ DONE ] Post by: Zaratustra on July 05, 2010, 09:44:26 AM was kinda hoping each noise would make me a different shape and I'd combine noises and become even more different shapes and oh well.

R. Hill on July 05, 2010, 02:43:19 PM I think this game would start to be difficult if after getting out of the cave it sent you to an infinitely scrolling world where you had to morph to fit through different holes quickly.
Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [FINISHED] Post by: increpare on July 05, 2010, 02:47:06 PM I think this game would start to be difficult if after getting out of the cave it sent you to an infinitely scrolling world where you had to morph to fit through different holes quickly. Ah, I hadn't thought of that. That would probably be the smoothest option, I think, yes. (Well I guess any sort of chase sequence could work).Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [FINISHED] Post by: Bandages on July 05, 2010, 03:14:18 PM Very simple, very relaxing.
Not really that compelling, though, and I didn't quite feel attached to the game whatsoever. If I hadn't known it was short from the other comments, I probably would have stopped playing after getting to song 5. Perhaps a bit more challenge would have made it stand out more, but as it is, it's just a quick zen game. Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [FINISHED] Post by: guille on July 05, 2010, 03:32:14 PM Nice atmosphere and sound. :gentleman: kinda creepy (in a good way). Congrats on finishing so fast (in a good way). :whome:
Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [FINISHED] Post by: LiquidAsh on July 05, 2010, 03:50:37 PM Nice entry. I agree with the others about it feeling like this could go further in terms of either more challening combinations or sequences of sounds, or in developing the music that the player creates (possibly mixed with additional sounds from other entities in the environment).
Kudos for quickly rendering this novel idea into a playable game. I found it captivating. Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [FINISHED] Post by: HybridMind on July 06, 2010, 05:51:00 AM Finally had a chance to try this out and I enjoyed your interpretation of the case-art for this game. I like the idea that the level design could create the music soundtrack that the player might have to play and that they literally can't pass unless they are playing the right chords it would seem. I liked the palette.
Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [FINISHED] Post by: Melly on July 06, 2010, 06:18:02 PM I enjoyed it too. I agree with many of the suggestions, different types of shapes, or ways for the environment to have you create music as you go through it would be great ways to expand the concept.
Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [FINISHED] Post by: GordonCSA on July 07, 2010, 11:40:36 AM Another possibility for increased challenge would be to only let the player stay in particled(?) mode for a limited amount of time, another variant of having to find the right notes quickly.

Great game. Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [FINISHED] Post by: miconazole on July 12, 2010, 12:53:47 AM Increpare, seriously, how do you come up with so many good game ideas so fast? Great work on the sound. The warm colors near the surface are lovely, too.
I love the idea of underwater tunnels as some kind of bizarre sheet music for the whale to sing. I want to hack it to make him sing the Super Mario Bros. theme. :giggle: Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [FINISHED] Post by: Spross on July 20, 2010, 06:40:08 AM Congrats on getting featured on this weeks Sawbuck Games roundup over at the AV club!

One of my favorite parts was "searching" for the right note to fit through the space; this adds an interesting element to the game's "score."
Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [FINISHED] Post by: s0 on July 25, 2010, 03:42:44 PM Very nice! I like how you took the title literally, and the "emergent" soundtrack. Collision seems a bit "jerky" at the moment though and I managed to briefly get stuck in a wall at some point.
Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [FINISHED] Post by: adam_smasher on July 26, 2010, 04:51:32 PM The ending is beautiful. I've left it going for about 20 minutes now.
Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [FINISHED] Post by: Soulliard on August 09, 2010, 04:14:04 PM Interesting idea. I don't think the mechanics support the concept, though. I would expect a game about learning to sing to have more creative elements. Instead, the game felt very mechanical. There game required no thought and required no decision-making. As a result, I felt more like I was going through a required set of motions than finding the ability to express myself through song.
I did quite like the whale graphics, and the controls were nice and smooth. The ending was a bit abrupt. It would have been nice to have some way of knowing that the game was over. Title: Re: [AGBIC] whale of noise [FINISHED] Post by: gingerbeardman on August 14, 2010, 04:27:17 AM Love the concept, the game felt like a tutorial for something bigger to come so I was a bit disappointed when it ended.
I'd love to see this expanded upon. |
