Title: Large Hydron Collider [FINISHED] [was: DrumDream] Post by: IPv6 on May 08, 2008, 04:32:14 AM This is semi-logical puzzle about colliding particles using magnetic accelerators. Each accelerator produce impulse to particle using unique pattern. Player should arrange accelerators (using mouse and drag-and-drop mysteries) in such a way that combined impulse send particle into target.
Each accelerator has it`s own time to charge before producing magnetic impulse, so player should keep in mind timings. Charging accelerators produce sound which is combined into level-unique ambient rhytm. And remeber: powerful collision can produce micro black hole that can destroy our Earth in one moment :( What is looks like: SCREENSHOT: (http://www.wiredplane.com/download/indie/lhc2008.jpg) DEMO: lhc2008.zip (http://www.wiredplane.com/download/indie/lhc2008.zip) ============================ Previous attempt: DrumDream SCREENSHOT: (http://www.wiredplane.com/download/indie/drumdream.jpg) DEMO: drumdream.zip (http://www.wiredplane.com/download/indie/drumdream.zip) P.S. Anyway, sounds awesome. Waiting eagerly :) Title: Re: DrumDream Post by: William Broom on May 09, 2008, 12:16:09 AM Sounds like it could be incredibly awesome.
Title: Re: DrumDream Post by: IPv6 on May 12, 2008, 07:14:16 PM Updated with screenshot and demo.
Although gameplay is quite random, i think i`ll start another game for this compo instead of twiking this one. BTW, what name sounds better for conceptual PG-game entry: "The world is what you think of it" or "Kastaneda`s jump"? Title: Re: DrumDream [DEMO] Post by: Metroid48 on May 12, 2008, 08:13:20 PM I'm leaning towards "The world is what you think of it," but then again I don't know what Kastaneda is. Is that the name of the main character? I can only find references to a band when I look it up.
I'll be giving the demo a shot in a few minutes; it sounds interesting. Title: Re: DrumDream [DEMO] Post by: William Broom on May 13, 2008, 01:14:40 AM I found the demo somewhat confusing. I couldn't really work out what I was doing other than turning on drums at random and then pointing my character in the right direction. It was also quite laggy, though not unplayable. Perhaps you could remove some of the debris floating around since they don't seem to have any affect on the gameplay?
As for the name thing, there is a sticky thread here especially made for help with names, in the Feedback forum. You might like to try there. Title: Re: DrumDream [DEMO] Post by: IPv6 on May 13, 2008, 01:59:33 AM Thanks! About lags - Demo requiring good CPU since there is a lot of colliding objects, floating debris... They are also pushing player into some directions, which helps sometimes... and sometimes not.
This game more of a concept. I`ll try to change mechanics later, but for now i`m working on new entry with clearer and cool idea :) Title: Re: DrumDream [DEMO] Post by: Metroid48 on May 13, 2008, 08:21:47 AM I gave it a shot and, while it's an interesting concept, it was a bit confusing - and stale. The game had a nice ambient feel prior to starting, but once in it felt a bit boring. The concept, also, was a bit underdeveloped. I just clicked on a bunch of drums until they were all active, then pointed my mouse at the goal. I didn't experience any lag, though.
Overall, it's an interesting idea. To make it more interesting to play, I'd suggest a bit of a change on the concept - make the debris a bit more important, or maybe make the guy move based on waves from the drums. The debris movement was also a bit random and unpredictable. Title: Re: DrumDream [DEMO] Post by: IPv6 on May 13, 2008, 07:23:30 PM Yes, i agree with you... it`s a bit underdeveloped. I think to change whole think into Shmup :) debris will be enemies, controlled by rhythm against player. Something like that, need to check this first of course.
For now i started to implement another game (will be posted soon) - about driving in the car through PG-generated city... with a twist! Title: Re: DrumDream [DEMO] Post by: IPv6 on May 16, 2008, 01:20:01 AM Decided to rewrite this game... Now it will be rhythm-based logic puzzle about...
THE LARGE HADRON COLLIDER! (http://lhc.web.cern.ch/lhc/ (http://lhc.web.cern.ch/lhc/)) :) You have 6 magnetic particle accelerators, bullet-particle and target-particle and Start button. Each accelerator create forces on bullet-particle according to PG-generated rhytm (unique per accelerator, so overall music will generate interesting drum "solo". Each beat apply distinctive directional force on particle). So you have to arrange accelerators in such a pattern that force "beats" from accelerators will move bullet-particle into target. If it will have enough speed at the end of the fly, there is a chance to produce micro-black-hole (if you didn`t hear about LHC, read it here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider#Safety_concerns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider#Safety_concerns)) Something like "The incredible machines" :) What you think? P.S. sorry for my English... may it is too hard for me to explain this in simple words :) Title: Re: DrumDream [DEMO] Post by: William Broom on May 16, 2008, 03:17:18 AM Large Hadron Collider FTW!! You should also make it possible to cause the advent of time travel. Either way it sounds like it will make the DrumDream idea better without losing sight of its essence. Go for it!
Title: Re: DrumDream [DEMO] Post by: Metroid48 on May 16, 2008, 07:24:04 PM That redesign concept sounds perfect! It'll help sort out how each one moves stuff, too.
When you say position them, do you mean rotate around the ring, not move them at all (just on/off), or inwards and outwards from center? Title: Re: DrumDream [DEMO] Post by: IPv6 on May 19, 2008, 01:42:19 AM 2chutup: time travels, brilliant!!! :) I have to think about it! :))))
Accelerators are moved by mouse, player can drag`n`drop them everywhere. i already implemented seed generation from player-provided string (player is asked to enter level name) and added some stats (so it is possible to make final hit speed on specific level better than friend`s result) New demo wiil be ready soon! :) Title: Re: Large Hydron Collider [DEMO] [was: DrumDream] Post by: IPv6 on May 21, 2008, 11:48:44 PM Updated with new demo! :)
