This is the first time I've ever done anything over the net so want to check I'm doing it right. You can either join a room or create your own. You can't do much after joining a room apart from pick a side and type some text. Title: Re: Argue Mentor Post by: Oddball on January 17, 2011, 08:12:48 PM Thanks for trying. Was that the Windows or Mac version?
Title: Re: Argue Mentor Post by: Inanimate on January 17, 2011, 08:15:57 PM Same problem, Windows.
Title: Re: Argue Mentor Post by: ink.inc on January 17, 2011, 08:16:53 PM Sorry man, try again. Windows.
Title: Re: Argue Mentor Post by: FK in the Coffee on January 17, 2011, 08:17:32 PM Windows. Identical error.
Title: Re: Argue Mentor Post by: Oddball on January 17, 2011, 08:18:35 PM Oh well. I guess it's back to the drawing board.
Title: Re: Argue Mentor Post by: Destral on January 17, 2011, 08:47:10 PM Make it like a fighting-ish game in which you use your wits and clever argumentative ripostes as attacks and semantics as defense. You could even frame it in the context of presidential candidacy debates, with two candidates debating something, and an audience of X spectators, each with a set of stats that the debaters can appeal to etc. Finally, at the beginning of each battle, you could have a random sentence generator of some sort that poses the subject to debate (the more ridiculous the better), and then have a coin toss, whoever wins can choose 'for' or 'against, or to go first or second, with the other player getting to choose whatever the first player didn't choose. I think a similar idea for this was in last week's Extra Credits or something. Mortal Kombat 2 levels of blood.Title: Re: Argue Mentor Post by: Oddball on January 17, 2011, 10:15:41 PM D'oh. I'm showing my inexperience with these things. Apparently you need to open port 42000 on your router if you want to host a game. It should all be working now. You'll need to download again.

Title: Re: Argue Mentor Post by: Oddball on January 17, 2011, 10:56:05 PM Thanks for coming online ThePortalGuru, and Inanimate. I'm mighty relieved that it worked in the end. Now to start adding the actual game elements.
Title: Re: Argue Mentor Post by: Oddball on January 18, 2011, 09:35:38 PM Ok there are now some topics to discuss. Not sure if serious or silly subjects would be best so there is a mix.

Title: Re: Argue Mentor RC1 **ONLINE NOW** Post by: Oddball on January 19, 2011, 05:04:30 PM Ok here's the first release candidate based on the feedback I got from recent plays. I'm going to host a room for a few hours if people would like to try it out.

Title: Re: Argue Mentor RC1 **ONLINE NOW** Post by: TobiasW on January 19, 2011, 06:40:09 PM Don't try it, guys. I joined it more than half an hour ago just to test it and now I'm still talking in there. It just takes too much time, Oddball!
Title: Re: Argue Mentor RC1 **ONLINE NOW** Post by: Inanimate on January 19, 2011, 06:41:08 PM This is a better chat program than debate program, mostly because all these great minds think far too alike!
Title: Re: Argue Mentor RC1 **ONLINE NOW** Post by: TobiasW on January 19, 2011, 06:51:59 PM Yeah, we pretty much instantly go on the same side and then tell each other how great our decision was :P
Title: Re: Argue Mentor RC1 Post by: Oddball on January 19, 2011, 07:27:10 PM Haha  Yes the debates have been a little one sided at times. You guys gave me loads of great ideas for improvements too. :gentleman:(http://www.gooeyblob.com/temp/smileytoast1.gif)
I had a ropey internet connection so apologies to the people who got kicked when it went down. Title: Re: Argue Mentor RC1 Post by: TobiasW on January 20, 2011, 08:27:27 AM Okay, so a few topics:
Pizza vs Hot Dogs Programming vs Game Maker, Unity etc (I forgot what the word for that is) Television vs Cinema 3d movies vs Normal movies Oldschool games vs Modern games 2d games vs 3d games Firefox vs Chrome (vs Safari - I'm wondering if 3-way debates would get too much. Probably.) PC games vs Console games Meat vs Fish Oh, and another feature (perhaps not a good idea after I've posted so much crappy topics): Topic rating! Might be a nice statistic for you! And ingame topic suggestion. Harness the power of web 2.0! :P Title: Re: Argue Mentor RC1 Post by: Inanimate on January 20, 2011, 05:05:04 PM Portables Vs. Consoles. I meant to suggest that in the chat, but it slipped my mind.
Title: Re: Argue Mentor RC1 **ONLINE NOW** Post by: Oddball on January 20, 2011, 07:19:22 PM Here's the second release candidate based on the feedback I got from RC1.

EDIT: Thanks to those that popped in for a debate. There was some really good discussion. Spotted a few bugs though and the Mac version I was running quit unexpectedly. I guess there's still a few bugs to squash yet. Title: Re: Argue Mentor RC2a ** JOIN IN ONLINE NOW ** Post by: Oddball on January 21, 2011, 06:16:35 PM RC2a is mainly bug fixes with no major feature additions. I'm hoping this will be the final version with only more topics to add for it to be finished.

Title: Re: Argue Mentor RC2a Post by: Oddball on January 21, 2011, 07:49:31 PM Cheers. Thanks for trying it. I had fun.
Title: Re: Argue Mentor RC2a Post by: Sos on January 21, 2011, 09:16:51 PM I still hate you :P
Title: Argue Mentor RC2b Post by: Oddball on January 24, 2011, 03:10:46 AM This wil probably be the final version. Everything is in and hopefully all the bugs are fixed. I did run out of ideas for discussion topics, there's about two hours worth total ATM. Hopefully I'll find some inspiration for more topics before the compo finishes.

Operating systems
Just saying, I'd love to try the game. And the step from Mac support to Linux support isn't that big. :) Title: Re: Argue Mentor RC2b Post by: Oddball on January 24, 2011, 05:57:59 AM My code is Linux ready, but I don't have a Linux machine to compile it on. What's a good/easy to use Linux distro? I'll see about getting it installed on my virtual machine.
Title: Argue Mentor RC2b Post by: Oddball on January 24, 2011, 03:56:04 PM Oh my god is Linux the most complex OS in the world!? Everything seems to be dependent on something else and it is guaranteed that you will be missing that something else. Anyway after much faffing I have installed linux and made a build. I just hope it works.

Personally, I find all code that has to be compiled difficult to distribute. I'm impressed that you manage to do it properly. Much, much love for you :)
Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work properly for me. The User-name-dialogue opens properly, but once I hit "OK" I get a: Code: $ ./arguementor Segmentation fault I am running a fresh Ubuntu 10.10 (64-bit) installation. Edit: When retrying a few minutes later, it works perfectly. Now I can't get it to crash. Weird, but good. :) Title: Re: Argue Mentor RC2b [WIN+MAC+LIN] Post by: Oddball on January 25, 2011, 03:29:15 AM Glad it worked eventually. I did notice that pressing the Enter key when entering the username caused a fault, I had to actual click the ok button. My mini rant wasn't completely serious, after all I had just installed an OS for the first time ever and compiled an app for it in less than an hour total. One thing I should point out for all versions is they won't run straight from the zip, they need to be extracted to work correctly.
Title: Re: Argue Mentor RC2b [WIN+MAC+LIN] Post by: Dacke on January 25, 2011, 04:05:37 AM Great! And it does seem like it was the enter-pressing that was the problem, after all. I should test things properly, before I start complaining, heh
As a programmer, I must say that working in a Unix-like environment is invaluable. I've only been at it for a year, but I've become completely dependant on it. New things always take some effort to learn, but this one is well worth it! Title: Re: Argue Mentor RC2b [WIN+MAC+LIN] Post by: Oddball on January 26, 2011, 08:11:33 AM I have a host/server set up on what will hopefully be a better connection. I'm going to try and keep it running all evening so if anyone fancies popping in to chat/debate you're welcome.

Title: Re: Argue Mentor [FINISHED] Post by: Froshin on March 15, 2011, 12:52:24 PM Hi!
I know you called it finished, but there's more potential to it! D: This software / game / tool seems to have a lot of potential to me. I can imagine a well-moderated, 20 person room arguing over whatever. But there's a couple of things lacking that I'd really love to have implented! For instance, say someone's got a fanbase of some sort, and picked 20 persons to decide if they're against or with implenting something to his game or whatever the case might be? This tool could be both usefull and entertaining. Quick and clean. In this case, the person would probably want to customise the options, right? Erm. Herpderp. Here's a list of features I think would be enhancing: Pre-server select menu. ( Server browser, connect to Ip button ) Connect to IP Custom buttons/sides/choices/whatever Custom time limit Overall, I've had two freind trying to host, both who is experienced enough to generally do it well without problems - Both failing. They're both on windows 7 as far as I know. Cheers to a good software! Title: Re: Argue Mentor [FINISHED] Post by: Oddball on March 15, 2011, 03:25:13 PM Thanks for trying it. Your suggestions have already been posed several times, but to be honest Argue Mentor was only ever intended for the versus compo and as such I have little inclination to expand upon it now the deadline has passed. They are good suggestions that I'm sure would improve the experience but they are unlikely to happen now.
To host a room you need to forward port 42,000 if you are behind a router. This is also sometimes called a virtual server on many routers. You will also need to know your computer's local IP to set it up properly. Below are the settings for my Belkin router. (http://www.gooeyblob.com/temp/amnat.png) After that it's just a matter of telling your firewall to allow connections to and from the application. I've hosted successfully from Mac OS X, Windows 7 and XP, Ubuntu, and also Windows 7 running through parallels on a Mac. My only problem with hosting for any length of time is my crappy internet connection which seems to go down every 15 minutes. |
