Title: Metal Gear: The Roguelike
Post by: Slash - Santiago Zapata on May 13, 2008, 09:33:20 PM
Hello !

I would like to enter this competition, I hope it's open to anybody.

Metal Gear: The Roguelike

* Infiltrate a base as a FOXHOUND special forces operative
* Explore the randomly generated multi-building jungle base complex.
* Stealthy rescue hostages and increase your rank
* Avoid guards, they are bad
* Find stealthy and not so stealthy weapons (Knifes, Handguns, Machineguns, Explosives and Rocketry)
* Destroy mass-destruction nuclear-warhead-armed gigantic Metal Gear mechas
* Meet new people and make friends with your transceiver.

Mockup

Current Status
* Researching and preparations for a 14DRL

I was starting to wonder where all the roguelikes were.

Seems like a pretty awesome concept. Will only the environment be procedural? Maybe you could expand on that. Have procedural mission objectives, for example.

I'm glad it wasn't just me who had the idea of a procedural Metal Gear game, although it wasn't going to be a roguelike. It's a pity I couldn't spare the time to work on it though :(

Is that a smoking indicator I see in the lower left? Lolz.

I'm surprised as well that there haven't been more rogue-likes appearing for PG contest - they thrive on PG! ::)

This will probably be pretty comical to play, or at least I hope. As suggested, try making more than just the levels procedurally generated - maybe weapons, enemies, or objectives (not all of the above though) too!

Bad luck, this is the worst of times for the to participate in a competition. Heavy times at work.

I hope to at least pull out enough time for a 7DRL

You know what would be kinda sweet? If a small list of operatives was compiled randomly from a big list of operatives before each mission or else a small group of skills was randomly selected at the beginning of each game. More work, and probably complicated, but nifty in that procedurally generated way.

Are there going to be multiple 90+ minute cutscenes rendered in ASCII?

If you manage to do that PG while giving the characters in the movie depth, personal development and the chance to overcome their difficulties in the end, I will vote for instant win!

Holy fucking shit!
We need to make a "real" MGS with story n shit in ASCII! We two! Together.
This is big... really big... ohmygawd... (btw, let's make an ASCII-Sotc, an ASCII-Final Fantasy and an ASCII-Oblivion aswell)

We design, you code, I compose and record and we are ~on our way~

Dude, what ya say? This is big, I tell ya.

BaronCid :D

FWiW, I was originally going to work on a roguelike implementation of thief, but I totally gave up on it (well, I screwed up and used a heat equation instead of a light equation, which inspired me enough to change my direction entirely and it turned into a different project, culminating in a tiny prototype that I was happy to see the back of  :D ).

Are you going to keep working on it?

I'd hope so, I was kind of looking forward to a stealth oriented roguelike (plus now there's more time to implement more things eh?)

Wahh, that's a shame. I was just looking forward to playing the only roguelike in the competition!

I think the roguelike developers snobbed us on this one. :P Well, their loss.

Unless there was something else going on in the roguelike circles at the same time.

I was just thinking how I would love to play a roguelike that's explicitly centered on stealth--I think the idea has a lot of potential and it could get really in depth.  I thought I had the idea when I was playing Incursion (my favorite RL characters are always rogues or thieves) but this thread probably planted the seed in my head without my realizing it  :)  I would have liked to see how this turned out.

If anyone wants to talk about making a stealth RL, let me know... not that I have anything to contribute besides art (which generally is frowned upon in RLs, it seems to me...), but I'd like to hash out ideas, anyway.

0_0 why not Metal Gear Roguelike.. in real time? REAL TIME ASCII GAMES = Win

Because then it wouldn't be too different from the early 2D MG games, just with an ASCII aesthetic. With a turn-based stealth game you could have more complex stealth challenges.

Naw, you have all the complications and wide array of commands, in real time.
It'd just be harder/faster (and quite possibly>better!)
BTW did you play Metal Gear Online when it was out? Was really fun, sneaking in real time. They had a mode of Snake vs Guards that was brilliant.

The competition was announced on a few roguelike sites

Like I said, we were snobbed. :P
