Title: Chess Without Turns [FINISHED]
Post by: Sos on February 27, 2011, 08:19:06 PM
(http://www.so0os.com/realtimechess/rtc.jpg)
[i changed the title but i'm too lazy to make a new banner...]

In Chess Without Turns, standard chess rules apply, with some exceptions:

1. There are no turns, the faster the better.
2. It's communist - you need to kill everyone, not just the king
3. Some junk-rules are removed (castling, checks, mates, en passant, a.s.o.)

I guess that's all there is!

Special thanks to Zaal Toni for the chessboard and Chris Benjaminsen for player.io ;)

That was... interesting. It seemed to devolve into bumrushing the enemy lines with a pawn and turning it into a queen and then eating their side from the inside, though.

Wait, so THAT's what you did? I was wondering where she came from.

Haha, yeah it's like Chessand & Chessquer, (brute force > strategy)

Hi!
I just cheated and hacked the server for some extra fun (if chess was fun anyways...)

I somehow feel better now

Just had 3 matches against some guy! Just won once!  ???
It's awesome though and I had lots of fun with it! It's short of course but very engaging!
I must concur with Ryavis! Rushing with the pawn is very effective, but I think that different strategies can be found!
Good job, Sos!  ;D

I love this, it's alot of fun. The Queen is a bit overpowered though...  ;)

Played a great game where all the power pieces got taken and only pawns and a king were left, that was a tense 10 seconds.

Just played 3 rounds of this against my bro. Incredibly fun, and genuinely fresh :)

Sure to get a vote from me :wizard:

Just from playing a few games of this, the Queen is like a friggin' a-bomb. You can singlehandedly destroy the entire enemy team from the sides with just a Queen.

Although queen and rook are the best, I love using the knight. It's especially fun when you get down to a knight vs knight battle, as they are actually kind of strategic.

I may come up with some more crazy modes soon ;) Like a game with only one piece type all over the board or.... or.... I can't actually think of anything else now :P

How about a mode with cooldowns or something.

A unit can't be moved twice in a row, or can be moved after a certain recovery time.  :eyebrows:

I don't want cooldowns, Kung-Fu Chess had that, and it sucks badly.

I was gonna say "put in some randomly spawning powerups then", but I realized that would move it away from actual chess more  :shrug2:

Played a game and won with a knight left. :) I don't know if I'd play this game a lot more, though. But crazy idea, I'll give you that.

I think the instant move resolution is detrimental. I'd rather see some time take place between when you start a move and when it resolves (piece slides over the board instead of teleporting to position). It's not an RTS, it's more like an I(nstant)TS.

It's pretty hilarious though!

I wanted to play this, but I live in Taiwan (GMT +8), which means I was the only one trying to play.

You can just someone to it, and you'll get matched instantly.

Increpare, Terry Cavanagh, Sophie H and I tried this game for a while. Here's what we thought.

- Great!
- Well implemented, works well in Kongregate/Flash.
- Interesting that losing King doesn't lose
- Some sort of delay/timing after taking a move for more strategy?

 :droop:

Dude, seriously.
That is not communism.
It doesnt' even resemble the common misconceptions about communism.

Sorry for going all political here, but stuff like that is annoying.

Pretty hilarious and frenzied, though in my experience 90% of games turn into 'release rook and swallow everything whole'. Guess you can do the same with a Queen. I started using my Bishops to great effect. Slam over to the other side and zig-zag my way to victory.

I know people are saying don't do cooldowns, etc. But something is required to make is a fun RTS rather than a speed troll.

Perhaps if the piece movement speed was really slowed down, so pieces could be intercepted, etc on their way from one point to another?
