Title: Hostel accommodation for TIGJam UK5
Post by: Draknek on June 07, 2011, 07:23:03 AM
UPDATE: Hostel room allocations viewable here (https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqZifQ_KDkg-dFU5MlRGUkNlejhJVGZnbEVtRFdBX1E&hl=en_US#gid=1)

Works out to £20 per person per night. Not including breakfast, alas.

Payment-wise there are several options. In descending order of preference:
* Bank transfer: PM me and I'll send you my account details
* Cheque: given to me in person
* Cash: given to me in person

If you don't have a UK bank account, I would rather have cash than fiddling with foreign cheques/transfers and suchlike.

UPDATE: I am an idiot and left it way too late to book. Backup plans are getting put in place.

I'm going to organise the hostel booking again: please sign up here if you want a bed.

Preliminary investigation shows that it might be more expensive than previously, I guess because of the season? But I think that means that it is only a negligible amount extra to have breakfast included. Looks like it'll be about £19/night including breakfast. Will ask about group discounts, but have previously been told they don't exist.

Please let me know when you're planning to arrive and depart. I am expecting to book rooms for three nights (Friday 15th - Monday 18th) but let me know if you're planning to be there either side of that.

The hostel's website is here (http://www.yha.org.uk/find-accommodation/east-of-england/hostels/cambridge/index.aspx): it is about 5 minutes walk from the train station and 5-10 minutes walk from CB2 where the jam is happening.

Signup list (nothing actually booked yet):

Three nights (Fri-Mon):
  • Draknek
  • Haighstrom
  • Harry
  • Stoney (plus Thursday at increpare's)
  • Alex May
  • bluescrn
  • Mincus
  • Jordan
  • Jordan's wife
  • McG

Two nights (Fri-Sun):
  • Jonathan Whiting
  • dertom
  • Ashley Gwinnell
  • Alistair Aitcheson
  • randomnine
  • eugeneius
  • adam a

We will see, I hope not being an active forum user wouldnt be a problem :-m

I would need a bed for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. (I'll be arriving on Thursday, I hope that's not a problem.)

Thanks for doing this again, Draknek :) Could you put me down for the Friday and Saturday nights?

tamat: not being active on the forums isn't an issue, just let me know when you come to a decision.

Stoney: that could be slightly problematic but I'm sure something can be worked out. Easiest solution might be if someone in Cambridge could host you for that first night.

I am planning to book this soonish.

If you haven't signed up yet and want a bed, now would be a good time to tell me. (Although I should be able to keep adding people after the initial booking.)

Hey Draknek! :)

Could you book me in for Friday-Sunday? I'm actually flying in on Thursday, but I should be able to sort something out myself for the extra night.

Cheers for organising the hostel (again!)

I have been busy with moving house and only got onto this today. :/ So the following is all my fault, and I do apologise.

Unfortunately they only have 14 spaces on Friday night and 17 people have signed up so far.

Am currently waiting for a phonecall back. Assuming they can't rearrange to fit more people in, I will book for 14 people on the first night and the full number for Sat/Sun.

I am sure we'll be able to find sofas/somewhere else for those affected. Increpare?

People trying to sign up after this point: I can probably (no guarantees) add people for Sat/Sun night but if you're arriving Friday you'll have to sort something else out.

EDIT: Argh, guy I just spoke to said it's a lot worse than that actually. Investigating alternatives while feeling very foolish.

*talks to alan*

Gosh that is bad.  OK.  We can deal with this.  If you're on the hostel list, we'll be in touch within the next 24 hours with some DELICIOUS CHOICES (hopefully).

(if you're in cambridge, and have a couch/floor to spare, PM me :)  ).

I searched a bit and found this:
http://www.hostelbookers.com/hostels/england/cambridge/13313/

At least the "availablity check" says that there are still beds free! (Don't know how trust worthy that is)

@increpare: Tried google+ today and send you a message! Did that work? :D

Have you tried phoning this place?: http://www.cityroomz.com - it's also right near the station

(There's no online booking, so no idea if there's rooms available)

I don't mind paying a bit more more to stay somewhere with an en-suite and a more comfy bed, if there's going to be a group elsewhere (the combination of CB2 chairs, YHA beds, and lugging a heavy laptop around didn't do my back much good last time!)

Just checked the Travelodge site too - but that's looking like £100 a night for a double room or family room (sleeps 3 - but 2 would have to share a double bed...)

Crisis averted, everything is mostly sorted now. Still some details to sort out but nobody's going to be out on the streets.

dertom: Nice, we looked around but missed that one. Pending availability (phoning them back tomorrow morning) some people will probably be staying there.
bluescrn: Yeah, we have some beds reserved there on Friday night as a backup. No availability on Saturday though.

All sorted now: we're split between the YHA and the Abbeyfield Guest House.

There will unfortunately be some room juggling going on: some people may have to switch rooms once or twice. I apologise for that but I can't see any way of rejigging everything to fit more neatly.

Anybody looking for accommodation after this point get in touch and I now know a few suitable options.

I've updated the first post with a link to a spreadsheet of where people are staying (https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqZifQ_KDkg-dFU5MlRGUkNlejhJVGZnbEVtRFdBX1E&hl=en_US#gid=1). In theory this could change, but if it does I'll post a note in this thread. I'll also send you all PMs closer to the date.

The price for both places is £20 per person per night, not including breakfast.

I know this is sort of late but I can make it this year now, hows is the living situation? I've looked at the hotels but they are expensive and seem to be out of spaces for the night.

Allen can possible advise on the hostel situation, but I'd recommend that you go try call them up yourself see if they have space.  Failing that, we can offer you an air mattress for friday/saturday/sunday if you want (though hostels are ALWAYS more fun).

We are staying at YHA Cambridge (http://www.yha.org.uk/find-accommodation/east-of-england/hostels/cambridge/index.aspx) and Abbeyfield Guest House (http://www.abbeyfieldguesthouse.com/).

Phone them up and see if one of them has space for you. YHA is definitely almost full but it is possible they'll be able to squeeze you in. Don't know about Abbeyfield's availability.

(if the short notice thing relates to hostel stuff, you saw my offer of an air mattress above, yes?)

It's half accommodation short notice and half me dropping a lot of things to try and make it short notice, so it's better for me to just bow out this year and organize my time better next time. But thanks for the offer.

I kept meaning to check this thread, but seems like the accomodation problem came and went?

If anyone needs a bed I might see if I can stay with a friend, which would free up a slot at Abbeyfield

(I'll post here with when I know)

It sounds like some people are still looking for accommodation at late notice, so here's some more places we investigated.

I've organised groups at:
* YHA Cambridge: http://www.yha.org.uk/find-accommodation/east-of-england/hostels/cambridge/index.aspx
* Abbeyfield Guest House: http://www.abbeyfieldguesthouse.com/

These places are worth investigating:
* Cambridge Rooms: http://www.cambridgerooms.co.uk/
* Cityroomz: http://www.cityroomz.com/ (but no availability Sat night)
* Hostel search site: http://www.hostelbookers.com/hostels/england/cambridge/

If anyone phones round or has done so already, it would be useful if you could leave a note here which places are definitely full up. I am guessing both YHA and AGH both are (because people are unsuccessfully looking for accommodation) but would like confirmation of that.

A little reminder... remember to bring your own towel!

Probably best to travel light, too - it doesn't look like there's any one room we've got for the duration where we can leave things?

Sweet, thanks for that Draknek my search for empty uni rooms came up blank. I need to learn some ancient internet wizardry I guess.

Edit: Scratch that, between deciding I could afford it and finding my wallet it seems that there are no rooms available anymore. *headdesk*

In general people are moving around a lot, but there is one room we have for all three nights. If you have a lot of stuff it should be possible to grab someone staying in that room and stash things there during the day. (Though harder if you're at the other place on the first night...)

LeFishy: :( Also getting no availability here at the moment, but I didn't check before posting that list.

Alright, I think I'm booked into Abbeyfield via Hostelbookers.

The reviews suggest their a bit inept though so we'll see whether it actually goes through or not. If not I'll camp or something.

If absolute worst comes to worst we can probably find a slot for you on the floor here, but it will be a tight squeeze.
