Thanks guys!

List of to-do/doing stuff:

  • Going to skype the animator in about 20 minutes, will hopefully settle on a workload/timeframe for milestone 1. You've seen his work before.
  • Currently coding: room transitions & fancy text rendering stuff
  • Art progress: working on mockups and in-game perspective/look stuff

Looks awesome.
Don't want to thread hijack, but I hope when this is done you'll go back to Flee Buster. I think that game was intense and highly replayable.

That said, maybe the time pressure element could work well in this game.

Looking really interesting, and the concept art is gorgeous.

The first thing I thought when I read about the game was 'Ah, so it's a 4F game...?'  :lol:

Okay you've officially confused me. But I like it <3

Just had call with Mr. Ben Ruiz (http://benruiz.net/) (FlashBang, Offroad Velociraptor Safari, Minotaur China Shop, etc.), who is now going to be animating for Hollow's Deep full-time.

This shit's gon' RAWK.

The quote is from the announcement page. I saw the 4 words starting with F and the terrible pun/riff on '4X games' ( "eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate." )  sprung to mind. I'm a terrible person, and I'm sorry. I'll  stop hijacking your thread now go stand in the corner.

No, I got the four letter Fs part, I just didn't get the reference, 'cause I'd never heard of "4X games" before, that's new to me.

Definitely PC, not sure about XBox, as I've never released a console game before. More concerned with just developing+finishing the game right now.

As I've already told you this looks promising.
Movement engine is looking very neat, and the editor is shaping up.

Shall be keeping my eye on this one as it develops.

Here have an art (click for full-size):

(http://hollowsdeep.com/promotional/logopaint3.png) (http://hollowsdeep.com/promotional/logopaint3.png)

On the to-do list today:

  • Add parallax-able backdrops to editor (done now, just tweaking)
  • Add event triggers to editor (done, extending them into different event types and making them work now)
  • Work on animations (Ben is on it :))

This looks cool, I'll be keeping an eye on this.  That new title is pretty nice, although I think I actually prefer the original more stylised one.  The reindeer-thing in the new version doesn't really stand out enough to make it look like part of the lettering, making the curl coming off the 'H' look a bit wimpy and unbalanced.

Hah, thanks Jasper. Actually, considering the game you're working on right now, we should chat sometime, as there are a few visual/aesthetic themes in common. Maybe there's a few things we could bat off each other.

Thanks for the ups people, I think I'm gonna record another video log this evening, as just showing off art is cool... but not really informative, and I'd feel bad if I just posted hype shit with no actual meat & potatoes.

You're right! MORE RIM LIGHTING! :waaagh:

The concept art is looking awesome btw.  Logo's not working for me yet though, typographically it's cool, it's just the gradient and softness I'm not in.

Actually, considering the game you're working on right now, we should chat sometime, as there are a few visual/aesthetic themes in common.

For sure...   Hit me up anytime man.  Would love to know how you get on with LS if you have a moment to check it out too.

Yeah, for serious, Chevy! You probably have that teacher handwriting stuff going on.

I feel so ashamed of mine. You'd think I didn't know how to hold a pencil.  :droop:

Who wants a mockup? This is a pic of actual game assets arranged, I can more or less already build areas like this in the editor. Twobitart added fog and stuff to this since I haven't coded in the rendering for that yet, but this is the look we're going for, more or less:

(http://hollowsdeep.com/images/moths.png)

The moths will be creatures that actually fly around, and sort of "follow" you, I'm looking into shaders to achieve a nice glow-effect with certain objects like that in the game.

What think?

Very cool, good to see some assets for this. :handthumbsupR:

You can see the time that went into it, so best of luck to twooby as this ambitious thing goes on. Be careful with color though, the greens flatten things out a little.

Post by: Xion on October 05, 2011, 12:30:57 PM
hot damn that looks fly as hell.

are those the finished assets? some bits look a little sketchy still.

Title: Re: Hollows Deep (new screenshot!)
Post by: ChevyRay on October 05, 2011, 12:38:11 PM
It's not finished until the entire game is finished. We're holding off realllly polishing the artwork until twobitart can see all the things in-motion. I'm able to place objects on different layers for a really elaborate parallax effect in motion, so once she sees that, we'll do tweaks to make it look good.

Make no assumptions about what it'll look like when it's done, 'cause you'll be wrong :) just showing off some WIP stuff 'cause you guys have been asking, that's all.

are those the finished assets? some bits look a little sketchy still.

I can only afford to pay twobit for so long before my funds run out, so up to this point I've been like "plz make as much as you can really fast!", once I get things in motion and all of the pieces come together (really soon!), I'll see what my options are.

Exited, though, it's going really smoothly :)

The game looks just awesome, though it's a big shame that you're developing it in XNA (-> Windows only).

Title: Re: Hollows Deep (new screenshot!)
Post by: ChevyRay on October 05, 2011, 01:00:46 PM
Thanks!

Could be ported later, no problem. The fact that I get to work in C# is probably the only reason this game will actually get finished, so to be honest it'd only be a shame if I wasn't doing it in XNA :lol:

Title: Re: Hollows Deep (new screenshot!)
Post by: twobitart on October 05, 2011, 01:39:46 PM
Be careful with color though, the greens flatten things out a little.

Yes, I have been paying attention to that and put a blue tint into everything, but you're so right. It took me a while to find the right balance of green tones to separate the closer elements from the further ones. Chevy's gotta send me a build with his fog and such so I can compensate with detail and especially contrast. For now, I've put a bit of an underlighting blue tint on all the foliage in the hopes of complementing the fog.

Also, I haven't made any torches or light source items. Right now I'm just getting background atmosphere.

I suppose after I learn how this stuff is gonna look in motion that I'll need to know how the lighting engine is gonna work, or if I'm going to just straight up paint the sources. My hope is that your character will be running through "pools" of light scattered in the forest or even having her way lit by moths.

*insert moth to flame metaphors here*  :waaagh:

Title: Re: Hollows Deep (new screenshot!)
Post by: superflat on October 05, 2011, 02:07:21 PM
For my glow which acts on everything, I do a blur of the main buffer, and draw it back over the original in Flash's "screen" blend mode, which according their site: "Multiplies the inverse of the blend color by the base color, resulting in a bleaching effect."  Might be an approach worth trying.  You could glow specific objects by having a different buffer that you rendered to...

Can't remember much about shaders in XNA, but should be possible.

I love the art, and I'd really like it just as it is (sketchy, rather than super detailed.)

Title: Re: Hollows Deep (new screenshot!)
Post by: ChevyRay on October 05, 2011, 02:10:28 PM
Awesome, thanks jasper. Yeah I've already got code in place for rendering specific objects (by z-depth, z-range, type, etc.) to a buffer, so I'll do that and try applying different shaders to it and rendering it over/on the main buffer and see how it works, will definitely take some experimentation.

that comes later on though, focusing on more functional stuff atm.

That makes two of us. :)

That sounds like pretty much exactly how I was imagining it.

Ahh, fun stuff! I found that I can use the last half of the ledge-climb animation as a "hard landing" animation :D resourceful! So when you fall at decent speed and hit the ground, she goes down into kinda a crouch, breaking her pace, and rises up. Works nicely, but doesn't happen when you land from normal jumps.

Discovered I can change one line of code to make the game look like LIMBO!

(http://hollowsdeep.com/misc/limbo_mode.png)

I can slowly transition between regular colors and blending, also easily tint objects with all kinds of parameters for nice effects. Will play around with this more, and use sparingly for cinematic effect when applicable.

I said this to a fella on Twitter yesterday: "I think every time Chevy and I brainstorm we add 3 months <to the production schedule>...Should be called the "OOOOOWhatifIdidthis?" factor."

I wish I coulda heard everyone watching the game and the follow up convo last night (they were on the other side of the room from the livestream - NYUUURRGHHH!). I had stayed up hoping to listen in on feedback or suggestions - or even to hear Chevy talk real-time about his thoughts so I had them more in context than an email.

I'd suggest speech bubbles to be kept simple and readable. 4th is completely wrong for me, not readable and sucks IMO :)
3rd is too fancy, for me the best choice would be the first concept, but second also would be good.

Added visible selection list, highlighting, and instance naming to the editor:

(http://hollowsdeep.com/misc/instance_names.png) (http://hollowsdeep.com/misc/instance_names.png)

So now I can "label" instances by name, and reference them in scripts. I also added a script interface, but the scripts aren't actually being parsed and activated yet. That comes next!

Today I got more event stuff working, wiring in events and testing out cutscene stuff. I added more parameters to room portals, so I can do fancy stuff (attach specialized scripts to them, or make them one-way portals). Also wrote down a ton of notes for thematic/story things that will occur, and secrets to be hidden away in the game, but these need to be reviewed and some of them prototyped before I decide to actually put them in.

Making this game is way too much fun.

Good progress today as well, I added a bunch more function calls to scripts! Also re-working how scene transitions work, now that I realize scripts made the old system totally redundant 0_o I didn't realize how powerful these were going to be! Omg excited.

(http://hollowsdeep.com/misc/script_types.png)

I can place slice-scripts (the left) or radial-scripts (the right). Slice scripts are triggered when the player crosses the line, and radial scripts are placed when the player enters the radius (which I can adjust in the editor).

So I can now do things like, place a radial script on the ground, tell it to spawn a bunch of particles when the player hits that spot (eg. stepping on a patch of moths). And with slice scripts, say I want to trigger some kind of event or something once the player gets into the middle of a room, I can script it.

Now to finish reworking scene transitions...

Those scripts sound pretty awesome. Do you write them in a custom language or something like that?

Title: Re: Hollows Deep
Post by: ChevyRay on November 03, 2011, 12:43:16 PM
It's actually ridiculously simple. They're not really scripts, as much as a list of commands w/ parameters that I can type out in the editor.

So it just breaks it up line-by-line, determined which event to queue up based on the name, and passes that event the parameters. For example:

Code:
DisableAll();
CameraTo(500, -1000, 1.2, QuadIn);
Fade(1.0, 0x000000, 1.2);
Wait();
SwitchScene(OtherArea, 0, 1);
DisableAll();
Fade(0, 0x000000, 1.0);
Wait();
EnableAll();

That will disable all IActor objects (eg. disable player from controller, disable enemies). For in-game physics objects, it will disable their behavior components and make them just default to regular non-controlled physics (so in the case I want to move them around with events, I can do so).

Then, the camera will move to the target position in 1.2 seconds using a quadratic ease-in, and at the same time the camera will fade to black. The Wait() is a special type of call that suspends the event queue until all currently active events are finished (in this case, the Fade() and CameraTo(), and then it will switch the scene (opening up a level called OtherArea).

The event queue is persistent across scenes, so then it will DisableAll() in the new room, fade back in, and when that is done, it will re-enable all the actors.

Scripts will have control over other things too, such as particle emitters, screen effects, all in-game actors, and the speech/dialogue system.

Post by: BlackBulletIV on November 03, 2011, 12:53:41 PM
Awesome stuff, I like the looks of it. Are you parsing it as C# or doing manually? In the case of the latter I do wonder why the syntax isn't more like:

Code:
DisableAll
CameraTo 500, -1000, 1.2, QuadIn
Fade 1.0, 0x000000, 1.2
Wait
SwitchScene OtherArea, 0, 1
DisableAll
Fade 0, 0x000000, 1.0
Wait
EnableAll

(Not sure where parenthesis are needed or not.)

Looks like an interactive programming console.

Title: Re: Hollows Deep
Post by: ChevyRay on November 03, 2011, 01:03:17 PM
Doing it manually. Keeping it in function syntax 'cause that's what I look at all day long, so instead of having to jump back and forth between 2 different syntax, I can just script the event functions as I'm used to seeing them.

Would take like 2 seconds to switch to the syntax you're using though, if I wanted to. Haven't really seen a syntax that struck me as really good, yet, and I have no problem with the current one, but if people have suggestions, I'll take 'em.

Title: Re: Hollows Deep
Post by: BlackBulletIV on November 03, 2011, 01:07:58 PM
Fair enough.

On second thoughts, if it were me, I'd probably keep the parenthesis but drop the semi-colons; it kind of looks messy without parenthesis, at least when it's not syntax highlighted.

Title: Re: Hollows Deep
Post by: ChevyRay on November 03, 2011, 01:12:47 PM
In that case I'd have to just add one more bit of code to skip empty lines, 'cause currently it's split on the semicolons, not on the newlines.

To be honest, I put the semicolons in 'cause when I was typing the scripts, I kept on putting them there automatically without thinking, so either my scripts have to embrace 'em or know how to ignore 'em. C#, unlike ActionScript 3, dies if you don't use semicolons, so it's become automatic.

Title: Re: Hollows Deep

Nah no regexps, I don't know how to use those. Just like 10 lines of code that chops up the whole thing.

EDIT: Really need to sit down one day and memorize how to use regexps though, every time I use 'em I have to re-teach myself. Just don't use 'em often enough.

Also holy hell the main character is so small compared to the background. Am I going to have to squint to play this game?   :crazy: :handjoystick:

Looks great, but I was a bit disappointed by not actually seeing the layers parallaxing in the video...

I could show them in motion, but since it's really Chevy's game, I don't want to steal his thunder...so it's going to have to be up to him, I suppose.  :(

That's the thing. She's not. Those backgrounds are REALLY far back in space with a bazillion trees inbetween. I'm just showing you how I set up for painting assets and how all that stuff looks together.

This looks pretty exciting.  Twobit your art is amazing; ChevyRay the editor looks badass.

I'd be interested to hear how everything began; how the team assembled, acquired funding, decided on game direction etc.

Yeah, an eventual (lengthy) postmortem on this game is sure to be meaty and fantastic.

Got excited thinking there was an update to this.

Hopefully we'll hear some news soon. It's been awhile.

I liked the dev blog videos. I wouldn't mind seeing more of those.

A well made dev video goes a long way. Give to your fans brother.

I remember a while back Sara, the artist on this, tweeting about how bummed she was that this project got shelved, so unless something has changed since then I'd say this project is currently dead.
