Title: Blitz Meet [fin] Post by: Happy Shabby Games on October 25, 2011, 06:48:43 PM Since the beginning of October I've been thinking of a fun multiplayer game for my roommates and I. I've already got them addicted to Super Crate Box haha. This is what I came up with:

Use the powers from the pedestal like ember rain, phantom split, the slip, and the CHAIN ARM to aid you in this battle to the death. I'm creating this with Gamemaker 8.1 using Matt Thorson's Grandma Engine and Arne's generic 16 color palette for the art. Windows only unless there is some way to port GM games to mac? It will be freeware when it's complete. Thanks for taking a look at my first devlog  Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: Linx on October 25, 2011, 07:29:14 PM I love the simplicity of the pixel art, it looks so lovely :-*
Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: astrofra on October 25, 2011, 09:52:04 PM Nice & simple, so far. I like the shiny pixelart.
Is it made with GameMaker? Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: Happy Shabby Games on October 26, 2011, 09:52:18 PM @Linx & astrofra - Thanks guys. It seems like every art asset I make starts out complicated and I have to go back and prune it to make it more simple. I'm learning that less is more in most cases. And yes this is being made in Gamemaker 8.1
So today I was working on the art for the doors that hold the monsters back and got a chance to play the game with my buddy. (http://i.imgur.com/2lVoL.png) He had never tried it and I was stoked when he was able to jump around and smack the ball with ease within a couple minutes. One of these nights I'll hook up a mic and record my roommates playing against eachother. That will be ridiculous  Also, I implemented surfaces to draw the screen so the pixels in-game are nice and crispy. Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: Virion on October 27, 2011, 11:52:23 PM nice character. he looks a bit like the restaurant owner near my place :eyebrows:
Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: Ashkin on October 28, 2011, 12:04:52 AM Pong, but with knights? This looks like it could be fun!
Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: Happy Shabby Games on October 29, 2011, 02:56:31 PM @Virion-Oh man, take a picture with him haha
@Ashkin-Yeah good ol' pong with some platforming Today's progress- -implemented the easy lighting extension (as seen in Gabriel Verdon's "The Archer") -got basic torch/ball/player lights working -did some work on the tile set -made some placeholder background bricks to see how the light looked on them Here's a screen and video. Please excuse the horrible video quality. (http://i.imgur.com/f5y1E.png) Dev Video 1 (http://youtu.be/IdtkCUkasJo) The pit in the center is going to have some nice flames/particle effects. The idea is that if you try to cross onto the other player's side, a pillar of flame will shoot up damaging you and knocking you backwards. If you happen to hit the ball in the pit, embers will shoot out and fly towards your opponent. The embers will do a small amount of damage. There will be two ways to die: -Getting eaten by the monster behind your door if it breaks -Getting hit by the spiked ball or the embers enough times I was thinking about recycling this old monster sprite I made as one of the captive monsters. That's a 64x64 sprite so it will look massive in this game ;) (http://i.imgur.com/fILgP.gif) Right now I'm just getting the core game done and basic art assets, then I'll add different characters/weapons/etc. Those chandeliers/anchors will be suspended from ropes and hopefully swing a bit! Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: namragog on October 29, 2011, 02:59:36 PM YOU KNOW HOW TO USE THE LIGHTS TOO??!??!!?
I must be an idiot :( Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: grayfox88 on October 29, 2011, 03:21:48 PM Neat idea. Looking forward to a playable build!
Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: Happy Shabby Games on November 05, 2011, 03:23:38 PM I've gotten a lot done this week :)
-Lighting system finished -Pretty torches -Destroyable doors -Event system is done. The players are lowered in on the platforms, there is a delay for the player character's intro animation, then a ball is spawned in the arena. -If you hit the ball into the center pit, embers will shoot out and rain down on your opponent! (http://i.imgur.com/QBoBg.png) -Did a mockup of one of the monsters that will be trapped behind the doors (http://i.imgur.com/Dd9Eb.png) -If you try to cross over onto your opponent's side, you are bounced back by a force field with some lighting and particle effects. Things I want to start this coming week: -Animate the monster and get the game over event going when you destroy your opponent's wall. -Sound fx -Music -Other character concepts -Weapon concepts -Background art @grayfox88 - I hope to have something playable by mid november for everyone. Hopefully finish this by 2012. Thanks for dropping in doodes. :handthumbsupR: Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: Glyph on November 05, 2011, 03:49:18 PM Looks cool! I'm glad to see another single-keyboard multiplayer game, I never seem to have enough of them around when I need to. Good luck ;)
Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: Ashkin on November 05, 2011, 03:56:47 PM Great to see progress on this! I love that monster.
Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: Happy Shabby Games on November 16, 2011, 05:30:37 PM -Toned down the lighting effect. Everything was just looking kind of dreary.
-Added custom control scheme variables. Has anyone else noticed that with gamemaker, if you hold down to many keys, some keys don't work? -Added the first power-up (http://i.imgur.com/Lqcx0.png) (http://i.imgur.com/BqcmD.png) Flying Boots! They enable you zoom around the arena much faster for a short period of time. You cannot charge your sword attack while flying. The grandma engine is so versatile. These were very easy to add. -Drew some background art assets (http://i.imgur.com/7SysZ.png) -Wip animations for the monster in my previous post. (http://i.imgur.com/EFrDC.gif) (http://i.imgur.com/EQy3I.gif) -Added an "Ember" pick-up that shoots embers at your enemy. If you are hit with an ember you will be stunned for a short period of time. I want to add some temporary weapon power-ups like a pike with super long reach or a hammer that can knock your opponents off their platforms when you strike the ground. I'm shooting for weekly updates with this devlog so I can have some meaty posts. Thanks for checking out the game guys! Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: ink.inc on November 16, 2011, 08:41:56 PM Has anyone else noticed that with gamemaker, if you hold down to many keys, some keys don't work? This isn't GM's fault. It's a problem with your keyboard. Well, not a problem, per se, but a limitation. Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: Happy Shabby Games on November 16, 2011, 08:58:33 PM Bummer... There will be gamepad support so if you want to play with a friend at least one is recommended. Is there some way around this?
Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: ink.inc on November 16, 2011, 08:59:38 PM Nope.
Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: :^) on November 16, 2011, 09:08:31 PM Unless you buy a gamer keyboard.
But usually... using the multiple people on one keyboard is usually ok. I'm thinking about das uberlung or whatever the heck that skydiving game is named. It works fine when I have four people or more on one keyboard... You're usually pushing buttons often enough to hardly notice when a few pushes don't register. Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: XRA on November 17, 2011, 01:41:38 AM if you're using a USB keyboard and have a USB to PS/2 adapter handy, try that, some keyboards have different n key rollover behavior depending on how they are connected.
I like the concept & style of this, reminds me of fun things like joust or mario bross Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: Franklin's Ghost on November 17, 2011, 02:55:52 AM Just realised I've missed some of your latest posts and have to say I really like the work you've been doing. Can't wait to see all the new editions of power-ups and such, in a video. Also liking the monster animation.
Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: r0ber7 on November 17, 2011, 03:25:00 AM I like this one, well done so far. :)
Wish I had an easy lighting extension... Gotta figure that out by myself. Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: Happy Shabby Games on December 01, 2011, 06:09:41 PM -Optimized the lighting system and particle effects I have to get a nice steady 30 fps
-Implemented customizable controls for the keyboard but I'm having some trouble doing the same for the gamepad in a clean uniform way. I might just do what Super Crate Box did and give the players two control schemes for the gamepad because Blitz Meet uses the same amount of buttons. Custom controls are a must for two keyboard players though because things can get crowded and I know that not everyone uses the same type of keyz. -Chain arm power up fully implemented. This is a chain that replaces your sword, giving you insane reach. (http://i.imgur.com/cnlGz.png) -Worked on some background art assets. Meet papa cat. I think it's too gritty for the game's style so I might go for something with a more simplistic design. I do like how this turned out though. It was pretty fun to pixel. I think some cool hall flags would do the bg some justice. (http://i.imgur.com/smo8y.png) @peanutbuttershoes & XRA - I found out that if I map some of the 2nd player's keys to wasd for movement and some to the numbers it doesn't lock up. There seems to be a cap on how many letter keys you can press at once. @Franklins Ghost - Thanks for following it! This has been great practice for some things I've wanted to learn. For example: How to code a sword slash, hit box, and charged slash properly. Also getting a grip on the grandma engine for GM has been cool. @r0ber7 - Thanks, and good luck to you sir! Instead of using as3sfxr like I have been doing, I might try to record some real sounds for fun because my roommate has some ace recording gear. If it becomes too time consuming though I may just use the usual bleep bloops, which I like too. edit: bumped this to 40% Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: :^) on December 01, 2011, 06:45:44 PM (http://forums.tigsource.com/Smileys/derek/shocked.gif)

Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: eigenbom on December 01, 2011, 10:02:39 PM Awesome!
Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: negativeview on December 02, 2011, 09:55:14 PM Firstly, what others have told you about things working out most of the time are absolutely correct. You probably don't have to worry about it. That being said, here's some more info on the keyboard limitations stuff:
According to the original spec, you're only guaranteed two normal keys at once. You MUST be able to press any combination of two keys without problem or your keyboard doesn't follow spec. Three or more and they're allowed to work fine, or do any number of odd behaviors. "Modifier keys" (shift, command, control, alt, basically) are special. Those do not count toward your limit. You can press shift, command, control, and alt, and the keyboard still has to support any two non-special keys. In practice every keyboard is different. It depends on how they are made and what shortcuts they took. Gamer keyboards make a point to not cut corners and let you press more keys at once without problem. Normal keyboards tend to let you get away with far more than two these days, but it's still by no means guaranteed to work. This is one reason why rebindable keys are pretty much required, especially if you want to be able to press more than two keys at once: you absolutely cannot come up with a default binding that will work for everyone. Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: stef1a on December 11, 2011, 07:42:41 PM This looks so cool. I have been inspired. Please continue. :gentleman:
Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: Happy Shabby Games on December 26, 2011, 12:36:38 PM Game over Player 2!
(http://i.imgur.com/QST3F.png) 1 - New Pedestals on each side of the arena where Power-Ups spawn every now and then. 2 - Did some flags for the background art. You can make your own and possibly get it featured in the game. Check dis thread out (http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=23479.0). 3 - Did some toasty fire particles. 4 - New bricks. 5 - Player death sprite inspired by Mario's. It's actually a game now! The game over cinematics are finished. 6 - Edit: Scrapped the lighting system. It was much too dark. I like the colors nice and bright I'm bumping this up to 60%! The meat of the game is finished. I just need to do the sound, get some testers, tidy up some of the art assets, get gamepads working properly, and do the intro art. I'll have something playable by next weekend so if you have some buddies you can play this with, please pm and I'll get back to you. Thanks for the encouragement everyone! I hit a low point where I lost some steam for the project, but I pushed through and got to that plateau of productivity. :wizard: Hope everone's having a good holiday. Edit 2: If you guys want more updates you can follow me on Twitter @SeasonsDev Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: Zack Bell on December 26, 2011, 11:11:37 PM Great update, man. It's looking good. :coffee:
Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: namragog on December 27, 2011, 08:03:14 AM i reall y like it, but i think the background colors need a little more work ;)
Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: Angelbait on December 27, 2011, 01:29:30 PM Great updates so far!
Any plans for 2v2? That would be just WAY too much fun :-* Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: namragog on December 27, 2011, 01:30:23 PM If you don't mind, can you send me a file with all of the sprites? I would love to redo some of the colors for you.
Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: Ashkin on December 27, 2011, 04:06:12 PM I like the sprites as they are :/
Perhaps the flag colours could be toned down a little bit though. Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: BlueSweatshirt on December 27, 2011, 04:17:23 PM The only thing that bugs me is the blockiness of those flags. Also, I think they need to be adjusted a little bit so they fit into the background more naturally.
Also also, this game looks really neat and fun! Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: Happy Shabby Games on December 27, 2011, 05:11:31 PM @Zack - Thanks I appreciate it. :handthumbsupR:
@namragog - I'm using Arne's 16 color palette and I'm pretty fond of it, but I'll send you some sprites to see what you come up with. I always dig the sprites and background art you tweet. I'm new to doing background assets so I could use the help. @Angelbait - That would be rad haha. I hadn't planned on it but after I finish the base game I want to try adding a bunch of stuff and hopefully I'll get around to 2v2. @Ashkin & Jakman4242 - Thanks for the feedback guys. I'll toy around with colors and maybe adding some hangars. I could even have them sway a bit instead of being static... :-\ Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: BlueSweatshirt on December 27, 2011, 05:31:05 PM It would be pretty awesome if you made them sway programmatically.
Maybe have them shake/sway on the wall when the ball hits something, and make them go crazy when a wall breaks. It'd add to the tension heaps. :handthumbsupL: Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: Angelbait on December 29, 2011, 01:30:13 PM So when are we getting a Beta version to start ironing out the kinks!?
Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: Ashkin on December 29, 2011, 03:29:19 PM So when are we getting a Beta version to start ironing out the kinks!? Yes, because a pre-release version is MANDATORY for any indie game ::)Stupid Minecraft :| Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: Happy Shabby Games on December 29, 2011, 03:48:45 PM So when are we getting a Beta version to start ironing out the kinks!? Yes, because a pre-release version is MANDATORY for any indie game ::)Stupid Minecraft :| Haha of course. I've been transparent about this project so I plan on just releasing different builds as I get feedback and it progresses. Some basic sfx and gamepad controls need to be implemented before I release anything though. I'll get something out to you guys on January 2nd - scout's honor. p.s. Thanks for the killer flags! edit: @Jakman4242 - That is something I have to get in there... Was reading somewhere that Seasons was planning to release a Beta :P @Seasons: Can we see some pics of the new flags in-game? :3 Also, I really like the suggestion someone did that the flags should react to the game- shaking when the ball hits the walls, moving slightly as if in the wind as the ball flies by, etc. Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: Catman on December 30, 2011, 09:40:20 AM Nice! I look forward to trying this with my little brother! :)
Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: Happy Shabby Games on January 02, 2012, 05:15:39 PM Okay guys, as promised here is the first beta release of the game! There are many art assets that are still being worked on or missing(music), but the game is VERY playable. So kick back with some buddies, put on some hectic music, and enjoy. Any feedback is greatly appreciated and I'd be happy to return the favor.
Check out the readMe file before playing too. DOWNLOAD LINK (http://www.mediafire.com/?tywjes9d0g0mfw2) (http://i.imgur.com/gLB1c.png) -Supports keyboard controls and up to 2 gamepads -Windows only My roommates and I had a chance to sit down and play. We had a blast. @Ashkin - Now you can see them in-game ;) @Catman - Awesome I hope you guys enjoy it. :handthumbsupR: Bumped to 80%. Title: Re: Blitz Meet Post by: eigenbom on January 02, 2012, 05:29:00 PM Played it by myself and I totally pwned me. :) Seems like it would be a lot of fun when played with someone else for sure! PS that flag on the right is totally awesome. ;)
Feedback! The barriers don't really look like barriers to me, more like columns that are holding up the roof. You could make a stone wall that is like 4 layers thick and gradually falls away as it gets hit. Title: Re: Blitz Meet [Beta released!] Post by: Angelbait on January 03, 2012, 08:03:41 AM Damn! Have to wait till I get home to play! *shakes fist*
EDIT: Got home and played it till I beat the other bro so bad, he didn't even know he got beat so bad... Its fun man! Title: Re: Blitz Meet [Beta released!] Post by: Ashkin on January 06, 2012, 12:59:32 AM Tried it by myself, will try to get my brother to play later.
FEEDBACK TIME. It's really solid right now. The jumping/hitting feels good to me. However, I would really like it if you could allocate jumping to the 'up' key rather than adding an extra button for no real reason. The art is excellent. I love the particles in the middle, and I love you for not making the torch flames flicker all at the same time, but instead moving at different intervals and not making them same-ish. That doesn't make sense but whatever. Can't wait 'til you get some shaking + flag movement in there. The background tiles are cool too. Maybe have some particles for when the walls are hit? Splintering wood? I also agree that maybe the wood walls might not work- stone walls would work fine though. More! More! Mooooore! Title: Re: Blitz Meet [Beta released!] Post by: Franklin's Ghost on January 06, 2012, 01:30:01 AM Just had a go with my girlfriend and got completely owned. Great fun, nice work with it.
Agree about the jump being the arrow key instead of another button. Did have a glitch at one point with the jetpack where i ended up behind my wall and couldn't get out. Took a screenshot to show what i mean. Think stopping the character being able to go above the screen with the jetpack would clear up that issue. (http://s10.postimage.org/e2rwf6wwp/Blitz_Meet.jpg) (http://postimage.org/) Stuck behind wall (http://postimage.org/) Title: Re: Blitz Meet [Beta released!] Post by: Happy Shabby Games on January 06, 2012, 07:01:52 AM eigenbom-Yes, that flag is! Seems like others are feeling the same way about barriers not feeling like barriers so I'll give stone walls a try like you and Ashkin suggested.
@Angelbait-Glad you and your bro had fun with it! @Ashkin-I appreciate the feedback/encouragement man :). Yeah I get what you're saying about the flames. It's really only a 4 frame animation and I made them all start on a different frame on each platform. I'll get working on the flag movement/stone walls this weekend. Have you tried configuring the jump key to the up direction? @Franklins Ghost-It's nice to hear people are having a good time with it. And thanks for pointing that jet pack bug out. It should be a simple fix. I'll post an update Sunday guys. Thanks for all the encouragement! Title: Re: Blitz Meet [Beta released!] Post by: Happy Shabby Games on January 08, 2012, 04:35:51 PM Excited for this update!
Roommates and I playing :). Windows media player squished the video but it's good enough. Gameplay Video (http://youtu.be/CcemNrrh8Vw) Newest build download Beta v2 Download (http://www.mediafire.com/?mirk3hh6jrg8rwx) Title screen art- (http://i.imgur.com/sjefY.png) -finished the menu/title -added a few more sounds -bug fixes -balanced the embers -the flags sway now as the ball passes them. Math! -added wood splinters to the doors -the platforms lower down on rope now -if you win a match and your door has taken damage, it's health is set back to the last checkpoint. For example: if you win a match and your door has been hit twice (during that match), the two hits are voided. News about the music- I'm going to hire my roommate to do some good battle music for the game. He's a super talented guy and hopefully he'll fire up his hammond organ for the tunes! Title: Re: Blitz Meet [Beta v2 out] Post by: eigenbom on January 08, 2012, 05:04:06 PM watched the vid, looking good!
do u think the intensity of the matches could be increased by letting the player move into the other side of the 'court', even if its only by a half or so? Title: Re: Blitz Meet [Beta v2 out] Post by: Windybeard on January 08, 2012, 05:05:03 PM This game looks like great fun. Ill have to dl and find a friend....
Title: Re: Blitz Meet [Beta v2 out] Post by: Happy Shabby Games on January 08, 2012, 05:21:21 PM watched the vid, looking good! do u think the intensity of the matches could be increased by letting the player move into the other side of the 'court', even if its only by a half or so? @eigenbom - See your flag swaying in all its glory ? I like your idea. It could be cool if there was a power up that took away the barrier for a short time, and when it ran out the player would be transported back to his own side. I would like to keep the players seperated the majority of the time though. I'll have to fool around with it. Thanks for watching :) @Windybeard - Yeah get someone to play with! We've been having a lot of fun with it at my house. Title: Re: Blitz Meet [Beta v2 out] Post by: eigenbom on January 08, 2012, 05:30:25 PM Heh, yeh i saw the flag, very nice!
Maybe the barrier should actually move, so every time I hit the ball consecutively without u hitting it, my play space increases and yours decreases? Title: Re: Blitz Meet [Beta v2 out] Post by: Happy Shabby Games on January 08, 2012, 05:44:15 PM That would be cool but the majority of the time it's just a back and forward, one hit each. It might even slow things down if someone was trying to game it by hitting the ball just vertically. The classic mode right now is really fun so I for sure want to keep it as is, but multiple play modes would be great and very easy to implement.

Title: Re: Blitz Meet [Beta v2 out] Post by: eigenbom on January 08, 2012, 05:57:08 PM i want the thing too!
Title: Re: Blitz Meet [Beta v2 out] Post by: BlueSweatshirt on January 08, 2012, 11:15:33 PM I think for simplicity one hit against the wall should translate to one of those orange ticks or whatever filling up. I think it'd more clearly put across the state the game is in.
Also maybe do a little flicker effect or something when your powerup is about to go away so it isn't such a sudden loss. It's helpful. Title: Re: Blitz Meet [Beta v2 out] Post by: Angelbait on January 09, 2012, 09:03:37 AM I think for simplicity one hit against the wall should translate to one of those orange ticks or whatever filling up. I think it'd more clearly put across the state the game is in. Also maybe do a little flicker effect or something when your powerup is about to go away so it isn't such a sudden loss. It's helpful. Second both of these! I wouldn't mind seeing a double ball attack! Random powerup after 3 or so go into the pit from the same player and BLAMO, second ball enters the fray? PS - the Thing peaks my interest.... Title: Re: Blitz Meet [Beta v2 out] Post by: Happy Shabby Games on January 09, 2012, 01:07:30 PM I think for simplicity one hit against the wall should translate to one of those orange ticks or whatever filling up. Totally agree. It used to only take 3 hits to destroy the wall but the game would only last a minute or so. Right now the games are roughly 3-5 minutes long which I think is a good number. I just need to find an aesthetically pleasing way to show your progress. It's very confusing right now to know how much health your door has... I could just have 3 doors(that are destroyed after 3 hits) on each side and get rid of the match system. You could really judge your progress that way. @Angelbait - That's not a bad idea! I might make a bunch of crazy buffs and have a list like in smash bros. where you can turn certain ones on and off. I don't know. Concerning the thing - :laughter: Title: Re: Blitz Meet [Beta v2 out] Post by: namragog on January 09, 2012, 01:21:25 PM Well, I'm going to do The Thing, so don't worry about it 8)

Title: Re: Blitz Meet [Beta v2 out] Post by: BlueSweatshirt on January 09, 2012, 05:04:32 PM If you end up doing stone for the wall, making it become increasingly chipped/cracked as it gets hit would be a great way to communicate it. That's much more natural and avoids weird HUD overlays.
Title: Re: Blitz Meet [Beta v2 out] Post by: Happy Shabby Games on January 10, 2012, 08:44:12 PM Mini update to distract you guys from the thing.
New power up partly inspired by Angelbait's post- Phantom Split! (http://i.imgur.com/vxvL7.png) (http://i.imgur.com/xJAKk.gif) A green flame appears above your head to let you know it's ready. Your next hit on the ball creates a phantom ball that hurls toward your opponent. If your opponent strikes the ball they will be stunned. If I'm able, I'd like it to actually reverse the opponent's controls. -Made the smoke look a lot better and made the ball steam when it's going at its max speed. -Talked with roommate about hiring him compose the tuneage. He is in! p.s. with the current build, do not click on player 1. I already tweeted this, but trust me-nothing will happen. I don't forget to take debug things out. :) Title: Re: Blitz Meet [Beta v2 out] Post by: Zack Bell on January 10, 2012, 08:46:41 PM That's a cool idea and I love the animation!

SEASONS YOU MADAFAKA. Such a splendid animation and colors. The character has personality. I love the particle effects too, except the smoke one. Ugh I need to learn particles :P KEEP IT UP. :coffee: Title: Re: Blitz Meet [Beta v2 out] Post by: Happy Shabby Games on January 12, 2012, 10:36:55 AM @Angelbait-Thanks man! I was looking for some new music to listen to and that's right up my alley. I'll have to show it to Carlen(my roommate). I'm not sure what he's cookin up yet.
@herror- You're pixel art has been a huge inspiration so that means a lot to me! I made the smoke a lot prettier this time around. I don't use gamemaker's particle system. Mine are just objects with little sprites and different movement/transformation behaviors. Pretty simple stuff and it gets the job done. I can't promise a new build this weekend but expect a cool update Sunday. I really appreciate everyone who's tried out the game and given me feedback. Salud! :handthumbsupR: Title: Re: Blitz Meet [Beta v2 out] Post by: herror on January 12, 2012, 11:24:44 AM You're pixel art has been a huge inspiration WTF? That sounds almost like a myth or something. Its not about myths, divine inspiration, muses; its about working. Art, talent, inspiration doesn't exist. Work and practice does. I just draw, as you do. Everybody can. You did, and the results are evident. Now keep working. :coffee: I hope I'm not talking like 'artists' do.. Helping Hand (http://i.imgur.com/0kBof.gif) (http://i.imgur.com/zdVi2.png) Saves you once if the ball happens to get by you. It is not fool proof though. If you get the correct angle you can bypass it. I'm horrible at making gifs. The animation is much smoother in-game. The Slip (http://i.imgur.com/rgGeT.png) Makes your opponent's paltforms/floor slippery. The snow looks great in-game. Then to recap from the last mini update: Phantom Split (http://i.imgur.com/vxvL7.png) If you hit your opponents phantom ball by accident, your directional controls are reversed for a short time. My roommate has been busy so today I plugged in my midi controller this happened. What do you think? @helgravis - Thanks! Right now I don't have plans to expand on this project. This is more of something to play with buddies and have drinks. I learned a ton from finishing this though. My next project will be more geared toward a single player experience and I'll be able to use a lot of fun stuff I learned from this. @ANty - Thanks I hope so too ;D :toastR: Title: Re: Blitz Meet [fin] Post by: jamiebell on January 28, 2012, 11:55:20 AM Speaking of playing with buddies and having drinks, a bunch of friends are getting together tomorrow to watch a wrestling pay per view, and I'm gonna download this to my laptop and bring it along!

Title: Re: Blitz Meet [fin] Post by: jamiebell on January 30, 2012, 06:00:15 PM Just checking in to say we played it for a good three or four hours, and everybody had a complete blast! It was set up on my laptop after the PPV was over, and the eleven guys there each got a chance to play it and we all loved it.
I went undefeated 8) and I heard one guy say "This game is so fun, even if I'm losing miserably" which I think is a pretty good quote :) Anyway man, thanks for making such a great game, and I can foresee this becoming a regular thing among our group! Title: Re: Blitz Meet [fin] Post by: kirkjerk on February 01, 2012, 11:41:28 AM I need to try this out!
(You're smart in avoiding the name "Pong" in the title...Atari's lawyers think they own that despite, you know, the existence of "Ping Pong".) Way back when I made JoustPong for the Atari 2600 and had to rename it FlapPing. It took the back and forth of Pong and added the gravity/flapping mechanic of Joust: http://alienbill.com/2600/flapping/ I think your idea is even more engaging! Title: Re: Blitz Meet [fin] Post by: Happy Shabby Games on February 01, 2012, 04:38:24 PM Thanks for taking a look kirkjerk. I tried out FlapPing for a bit and got my butt kicked... I loved that pterodactyl that flew around though ha. The idea for Blitz Meet kind of spawned from trying to think of a fictional alternative to medieval jousting, so that influenced the name more than anything I guess.
Title: Re: Blitz Meet [fin] Post by: zafo999 on July 31, 2012, 03:44:59 PM In early June I ran a "High Rollers Mystery Tournament" at a regional fighting game tournament in Seattle called "Northwest Majors". Entrants paid $40 to enter a double elimination tournament. I used "Blitz Meet" as the Losers Semi's game and it made it onto the live stream with commentary.
Thought you might get a kick out of watching the archived match on youtube: http://youtu.be/wSs0e048pDs Title: Re: Blitz Meet [fin] Post by: Happy Shabby Games on July 31, 2012, 04:54:32 PM Haha, this made my day! Thanks for sharing the video. I'm stoked people are enjoying it. p.s. - Next time you guys play, press F4 to change it from windowed to fullscreen. I should have made that more clear in-game. |
