Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: sugarbeard on February 01, 2012, 01:37:43 PM Also I want a cut since you're using my likeness in the game.
Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: Gib on February 01, 2012, 01:43:39 PM This is the best thing. The lumberjack looks so stereotypically canadian it blew my mind. Blew. My. Mind.
One month seems a cool time span to do interesting stuff while keeping the game small and focused. :handclap: Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: Inzaniak on February 01, 2012, 02:31:20 PM One word: "EPIC!!!".

Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: laxwolf on February 01, 2012, 06:43:05 PM Hey Gabriel, fun idea: You can turn enemies into trees and chop them to mulch; after a couple seconds, they go back to their original form in bloody pieces.
Like? >:D Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: team_q on February 01, 2012, 06:49:48 PM I assume that everyone's here judging the game based on earlier unfinished projects of these two guys? Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: Dragonmaw on February 02, 2012, 12:21:26 PM Is there no way to get a PC release of this?
Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: owendeery on February 02, 2012, 12:52:41 PM Chances are that no matter what happens it will get some sort of PC release, considering that even though it's running on the Xbox, 90% of the development is us playing it on PC.
The only really difference would be adding keys+mouse in place of gamepad. Even then you can still play it on PC with an x360 gamepad. Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: SuperMistLand on February 03, 2012, 12:09:59 AM Haha I'm liking the smell of this. Smells like LUMBER.
Would you guys like any free labor? I recently quit my job and have a couple months of free time to produce some art. Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: Franklin's Ghost on February 03, 2012, 05:38:58 AM Looking nice so far. What program are you guys using to make it?
Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: FK in the Coffee on February 03, 2012, 06:52:41 AM Looking nice so far. What program are you guys using to make it? Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: ANtY on February 04, 2012, 03:06:53 PM That's why it's better to be the artist/designer on a videogame project. You get to work half as many hours and get all the praise. Except that when you lose a programmer you can do shit and when a programmer loses an artist he can still continue working on the game, artists are dependent on programmers :-\Yeah, I know; there's no future for me here as a funguy Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: team_q on February 06, 2012, 07:24:40 AM I am inappropriately excited for this.

Plus, anyone who comes out to tonight's Dirty Rectangles meeting in Ottawa will be able to check out the latest build of the game. Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: owendeery on February 23, 2012, 10:29:59 AM Also realized this morning that this last week of development is the exact same week as the last week of development for our last XBLIG game when we had to get it ready for DreamBuildPlay.
Except that was two years ago, and this time it's considerably less crunchy and horrible. Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: owendeery on February 29, 2012, 05:10:59 PM Soon enough!
Needless to say, we have finished. We have successfully completed the game in our allotted time (thanks to a leap day). If I were the OP of this thread I would change the icon, but I'm not. From here I need to put it through XBLIG community testing and approval, then release! I'll try to keep this thread update on its progress, and if anyone has a Creators Club account be sure to keep an eye out for when this comes up. Lastly, here's a screenshot straight off the xbox tonight. I finally scraped together enough controllers to test out 4-player coop on the console. Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: ANtY on March 01, 2012, 06:54:32 AM Will it ever be on PC? Or trailer at least so I can see the gameplay :eyebrows:
Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: owendeery on March 01, 2012, 07:08:24 AM Yes! It most likely will be on PC some point in the future. It's fully setup for PC, so it's pretty much a certainty.
I just put it into Playtest last night, and once we're getting closer to release I'll be putting together a trailer. Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: BlueSweatshirt on March 01, 2012, 01:26:41 PM This game will be a total standout on XBLIG :)
Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: BlueSweatshirt on March 02, 2012, 01:31:28 AM I like #2 more. Except I think it could use a few more enemies lunging at the lumberjack from behind him or something.
Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: Farmergnome on March 02, 2012, 01:32:00 AM 2, add fuckloads of perspective, and make it look like hes beating the one in front of him to a pulpy hamburger patty, that would be - badass-
Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: EdgeOfProphecy on March 02, 2012, 01:34:09 AM Wow, I am super impressed with how fast you guys have progressed on this. Can't wait to play it!
Also #2 is more epic, I feel. Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: imaginationac on March 02, 2012, 01:46:00 AM Vote for #2.
Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: vlaube on March 02, 2012, 01:48:47 AM I think I like No.1 better.
I associate No.2 too much with one player on top, i.e. single player. You are referencing that Doom artwork with No.2 aren't you? Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: amora_b on March 02, 2012, 01:52:43 AM Congratz, guys, this is amazing!!
The second one is my favorite, and I'm dying to know where they're both from! xD Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: Franklin's Ghost on March 02, 2012, 02:08:42 AM I'm voting #2 also. Can see it already looking crazy intense.
Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: eyeliner on March 02, 2012, 02:25:09 AM 1 = win
I get a more righteously enraged character feeling from it. With one or two enemies being thrown into the air, would be perfect. Second one is ok, I guess. Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: BlueSweatshirt on March 02, 2012, 02:33:14 AM Not quite. Though it's possible that the famous Doom artwork references the same illustration I am (it was made 6 years before Doom was released). Good guess though :) Huh... Could it be... The original Megaman game? (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a7/Megaman_nes_pal.jpg) Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: rek on March 02, 2012, 07:41:37 AM I vote for 2 also; I like the menacing wendigo in the background, looming over everything.
I don't like the logo though. Why go so pixelated when the game isn't? Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: Theophilus on March 02, 2012, 09:19:32 AM Number 2.

no xbox thus hoping for PC version :( Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: wademcgillis on March 28, 2012, 05:05:11 AM Why is the Xbox link dead?
Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: owendeery on March 28, 2012, 05:06:26 AM Because somehow Microsoft managed to remove all traces of the game from the marketplace right after it got released.
Raging a little bit right now, but working on it. Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: team_q on March 28, 2012, 05:20:04 AM http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-CA/Product/Bytown-Lumberjack/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80258550ada?noSplash=1
It's in the Canadian Store. I just bought it. Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: owendeery on March 28, 2012, 05:27:12 AM Alright well that's cool.
The main thing is trying to get it back up on the New Release list. Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: Franklin's Ghost on March 28, 2012, 06:11:52 AM Congratulations guys nice to see it's done and released now. Just watched the video and it looks like it turned out great :gentleman:
Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: team_q on March 28, 2012, 06:37:40 AM It's up in the American link now.
Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: Hangedman on March 28, 2012, 06:50:42 AM Picking it up soon.
See you've already got some good scoring in the US link! :gomez: Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: PompiPompi on March 28, 2012, 07:07:04 AM Hmm, it looks great visually, but the gameplay video didn't really show me much(the one on the website).
What I saw is that you just walk to enemies, and you have just one type of attack, although you can get a chain saw, which you also attack it the same way as the axe for some kind of a reason. I also didn't see there are jumps, so I wonder how is the gameplay. Maybe I am missing on it, maybe you wrote about it in this thread. I probably just compare it to final fight\castle crashes and the like, and maybe it has a different gameplay that I couldn't get. Is there a demo? Edit: Yes there is a demo, i will give it a try. Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: hyperduck on March 29, 2012, 03:06:40 PM :') so proud of the insane amount of gore in this game.. so proud.
Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: pluckyporcupine on March 29, 2012, 03:59:27 PM This looks awesome. Congrats on finishing it!
If I could afford a wireless adapter for the 360, and then XBL Gold on top of that, I'd buy it pretty quickly. :P In the meantime, I'll wait out the PC version. Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: PompiPompi on March 31, 2012, 06:41:38 AM I know you probably don't want to hear my criticism, but I got a bit frustrated from the game. :/
The guys throwing the stone throw them too rapidly, fast, and they are hard to dodge, especially when you don't have much free vertical movement. Aslo, the animals can practically cricle me, attack me from almost any direction(unlike in double dragon when you don't have more than 3 guys hitting you at once[usually]). It could be I am just an old grumpy gamer, but I didn't feel it was a fair challange, I thought the action was badly designed, at least from what I have seen. I also feel this game don't have enough polish(eventhough visuals and sound are beautiful), but that is not very important for me. Correct me if I am wrong, and maybe you can suggest me how to pass those rock throwers... Please don't take offense of this, I am just telling my own experience, I might be just ignorant. :P Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: owendeery on April 14, 2012, 12:24:09 PM For everyone who didn't get a chance to play it, the awesome Kevin Gadd just ported it to The Internet using computers!

Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: PompiPompi on April 15, 2012, 06:01:37 AM owen,
My thought is that you didn't put much effort and thought on the gameplay, and didn't play test much. It's ok to admit that. :P There is also the possiblity you made such a unique and brilliant gameplay that not many people can understand or relate, but I don't think that is the case. So which is it? Also I don't blame you for not putting that much effort(if that is the case), because it's a 1 dollar game. Though you must understand it's a bit frustrating to see a game that supposingly the developers didn't put much thought of the gameplay, but is very succesful due to the excellent art. However, there are worst things, like Angry birds, heh... Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: BlueSweatshirt on April 15, 2012, 06:27:26 AM It was made in a month and they were on rush schedule and are not accustomed to such paces of development.(I assume)
I do not blame them. :tired: Title: Re: Bytown Lumberjack Post by: ANtY on April 15, 2012, 06:52:52 AM However, there are worst things, like Angry birds, heh... I can't see how Angry birds is "worst in this kind of things" |
