Title: 8Bit Ninjas (first release!)
Post by: kiddRaddical on July 15, 2012, 03:35:58 AM
Hey TIGgers! First post  ;D

Well, I finally decided I should quit lurking and hop into the fray, and what better introduction on a games forum than to post my first game?

8Bit Ninjas is a retro-themed, arcade-inspired sort of deal. Player(s) (single/local MP only atm)try to get other players to fall to the bottom of the level without falling in themselves; the catch is that you can't actually push the other players much, so you throw ninja-stars to delete the surrounding terrain. Last player standing wins!

Regardless of what it says on the page, this is an EARLY release, as I'd love to take the design in more interesting directions (network mp, leaderboards, WAY MOAR LVLS,...), but I'm lone-wolfing now, so all that might take a bit.

Give it a try here, (http://www.gotenrg.com/?p=133) and lay it on me! I really respect you guys' opinions and would love some honest feedback (hey, and donate if you like it  ;)

TO THE GAME!! (http://www.gotenrg.com/?p=133)

This was pretty good. Gameplay was smooth and I like the design and overall concept of the knocking down of the ninjas..that's new for me

Definitely has an old-skool retro feel

Keep up the good work

It's really nice! Cute colors and music, maybe the sound of the explosion or whatever it is, is too loud.
I liked a lot the overall concept, so CHEERS!
Although it gave me a fatal content error... :concerned:

This game plays in a weird way. Bouncing into trees and knocking them over, enemies farting out a ton of ninja stars below them, and janky platforming controls all add up into an experience that feels less designed and more hap-hazardly put together. Do not get me wrong, the general idea of what you are trying to create is excellent, but I fear that your execution is all over the place. The music also just seems "off", especially the title theme. You say this is your first project you are showing to the public, so this is to be expected, don't worry. However, you have a great visual art style that I think can be expanded upon in a ton of interesting ways.

Hope that feedback helps!

Wow, thanks for all the great feedback! Let's see if I can reply to everybody:

@felipezille,@Majestic: Thanks for the compliments! Really made my day :). As far as the sound goes, ALL of it is bout ta be PIMPED (or at least replaced). I haven't seen that error yet though; would you mind telling me what was going on when it happend?

@JMSTark: yeah dude, that's totally helpful, and welcomed! I made the whole game in two months last summer, and sort of rushed it out the door, so to speak. Point by point:
1)The tree bouncing was intentional, as I liked the idea of the physics moving the level downwards over time.
2) Yeah, the music sucks :-[ Working on it though!
3)Thanks! Art is actually my main backgroung, so I hope that was at least passable. I re-did all of the blocks/shaders, so the graphics look a LOT better now and more arcade-like. I'll try to upload some screens soon.
4) Getting mixed reactions to the platforming elements. Would you mind being more specific about what you liked/didn't?
5)The enemies have since been re-worked in a more recent test build. They can chaeir stars chase/platform and actually throw their stars now  ;)
6)lol, thought I was the only one who says "janked"  :handthumbsupR:

Keep it coming!

Basically, the jumping is too slow; the player ascends like molasses and gravity doesn't seem to care too much about pulling the player down. I'm guessing that all you'll need to do is just change some parameters and then you'll be fine. Also, is the wall jumping/climbing intentional? Because if it is, I would recommend making animations for those actions to make it more clear to the player that "Yes, you can do this and not feel like you are breaking the game!"

Only the hippest of the hip are allowed to use the word jank, so its nice to meet some brethren.

@JMStark: Kindred souls indeed! :gentleman:

Hmm, I never noticed the slow ascent, but the gravity did annoy me for some time. So you'd suggest more of a "snap" to the jump, right? I think I ended up adjusting the ninjas mass and upped the grav to somewhere around 14.2 m/s, but my project corrupted before I could upload the newer, way better build.

The climbing actually originated as a glitch my little bro found during an early playtest, but I thought it was neat and decided to make use of it. Note taken on those animations!I'll try to see if I can repair the project file and upload the newer version.

BTW, has any tried the local MP? If so, I'd love some feedback/comments/suggestions/pizza.

Pretty fun. Some sound fx for when you use the throwing star things might be nice. Half of what makes ninjas cool is ultra swift sound effects and animations.
