The only weird thing was that the game stopped responding to cursor keypresses after a while so I had to close it (Esc key). Restarted it and it works normally now so maybe it was just something with my computer. Of course then I lost the game so ended up at the the main menu, at which point even the up / down zxc stopped working. The next thing I tired was pressing random stuff, one of which was Esc, which actually worked and closed the game.
