Title: How many hours in a typical week do you work on a game on the average?
Post by: heisenbergman on May 21, 2013, 07:12:39 PM
Just curious how much time you guys spend working on whatever game development project you're working on on the average.

I work a regular desk job on weekdays, have a wife and a 4-month old daughter, all of which are higher on my priority list that the game I'm currently working on, so considering I can squeeze in an hour or maybe two before sleeping every weeknight and around 10 hours during weekends to spend on progressing my game development, that amounts to barely 20 hours of work on the game per week.

How about you folks?

0-10 right now I'm slipping, but when I'm actually developing I spend about 3 hours a day on my game during the week and 4ish on weekends.

i think i'm averaging about 20-25 right now. but i have school and a "school job", which, despite it being not much work,r equires me to break my workflow and physically be there/get distracted. i expect the weekly average to go up in a few weeeks once i graduate

during anodyne, i'd guess maybe 30+ on average. during the summer months, probably more, usually consuming my entire day in some way so i never really kept track

I usually average about 10 hours a week split between programming, design stuff, 3d modelling or audio work. The past like 2 weeks were 'crunch time' and I'm the only programmer/designer/audio guy in my group so it was probably closer to 20.

All my recent development ties in with my studies, but I'm finally free of all of that for the summer so it's time to work on some new things.

Not nearly enough lately. Other things are taking all my time. Need to get back into it!

Prolly like 4 hours a week when I'm actually working on something. I dunno. Video game development is more a fun distraction for me more so than anything. Maybe I'll set a more concrete goal/plan soon.

full time student, part time job, i'd say anywhere from maybe 5-30 hours a week depending on how tired/depressed/busy i am

on breaks this generally goes up to maybe 20-40 hours a week

This is how Game Development feels for me....

I'm a part time student working on mathematics, and I work part time as a web designer, but I try to fit in around 20-40 hours per week. Most the time I end up procrastinating and eating snacks in my bedroom. "I didn't choose the INDIE life, it chose me!"

I spend countless hours drawing, and most of it ends up becoming some sort of asset for my game, so I really have no idea.

in terms of actual coding and hands-on development, 20-30; i find i'm the most productive around that range. i've tried doing more than that (40-50) in the past but i find i get less done if i force myself to work when i'm tired

but even when i'm not coding, i'm often "working" on my game in the sense of making to do lists, thinking about it, doing research on similar games, brainstorming mentally and then writing ideas down if they seem good, etc., so the true amount may be higher than the 20-30 if you include that type of stuff

right now though, since i'm nearing completion of the game, i've stepped it up slightly temporarily, and i'm more in the 30-40 range for the past few months

Given the demands of a full time job and life, I get in ~10-25 hours of active work (coding, etc.).  If just thinking and brainstorming counts then it's probably closer to 25-40 hours.
I typically get in an hour in the morning before my job, probably another hour in the evening, and depending on the weekend, I might get in anywhere between 0 and 8 hours per day.

About -2 hours. Everytime I do something I introduce 2 more hours of work needed to fix what I did.

This is how most of my creative endeavors end.
0-10 hours.

41-50, though not lately. I work every day during the week for give or take four hours, and eight a day on the weekends.

Of course I "mult task" and spend time on reddit/twitter/skype/ircs so that's not as boring as it sounds.

yeah i think 3-5 hours a day is perfect. if i'm really "on a roll" i'll do more ofc.

also as a rule i don't work on games when i'm either pissed off or in a lazy/impatient mood because i know the resulting code/design/whatever is going to suck and will probably have to be reworked anyway. i also stop working when i've had enough.

i'm actually getting a lot more shit done that way than with my previous work ethic which was pretty much "do as much as you can for as long as you can"

When I've got a really good game idea, I try to work on it as much as I can, almost any time I'm at the computer.

Since I'm still in school, I work on it during my study halls and computer classes when I should probably be doing school work.

0 hours. The update to Windows 8.1 is kicking my ass.

Since I have no day job, I try to work on my game at least 8 hours a day, so I don't get a guilt trip from knowing that other people are doing their thing at the meantime. :)

Full time somewhat demanding job + 14 month old daughter = roughly 10 hours a week.

I am always tired

What do you consider work? If conceptualizing counts, then I could say I never stop working. Even when procrastinating I draw as much inspiration from whatever I'm doing and apply it to my stories and characters.

Even when I sleep I'm technically working. Dreams usually consist of making art or playing a game that doesn't exist. It can be frustrating because when I wake up it feels like exiting an art program without saving. That only motivates me to replicate what I saw in my dream though, so it's still a viable source of creation.

I directly work on my projects in waves, I'll be uninspired and lazy for a few days and then all the sudden spend an entire day working. That's something I need to fix, everday needs to be a productive day in terms of actually doing stuff.

I work on my game probably about 25-30 hours a week. Sometimes more. If I didn't need to work elsewhere to pay rent, I'd probably be working 60+ hours a week.

I'm unfortunately going to have to say 0 - 10.

It used to be roughly 15 - 20 a week, but I've been so busy lately I've been losing my grip on progress.

probably somewhere around 34 hours a week I think, split between my own project and a team one.
