I was just in Montreal and told everyone how it was colder there than in Helsinki. Then I came back to this:

We had snow here a few days ago.
Then it disappeared.

When I was younger, the first day it was snowing, my mom would wake me up early and tell me to look out the window, and I was absolutely ecstatic.  Sledding, snowmen, snowball fights, and all that good stuff.

Now they've built houses on all the good sledding hills, and the other two have lost their allure.  Snow to me just sort of means "Oh boy. Colder and harder to bike."

I miss being younger.

Man, I love snow. But I live in Australia, so the only time you can see snow is when you climb up a mountain. To live in a place where snow comes to you would be amazing.

Well I guess, nothing beats where I am. For those who wonder, Oulu (http://maps.google.fi/maps?f=q&hl=fi&geocode=&q=oulu&sll=65.07213,25.488281&sspn=3.404925,9.887695&ie=UTF8&z=10&g=oulu) (Uleåborg) is one of the northernmost big-cities of Finland.

Two nights ago there was snow to my ankle; so this morning I woke up to come to school, only to find the snow now reaches half the way to my belly.

WHERE ARE YOU
I WANT TO BE THERE

We've only had snow showers that last the morning but on a few occasions so far, I can't wait till we get some that really stays.

On a somewhat different note, the Sunday before last I was at my dads house.  Something very unusual was happening.  In the front yard snow was slowly falling down.  In the back though, snow was slowing rising up ???  (real story, makes since if you know where my dad lives)

Yeah, Australia, little to no snow. ALTHOUGH: Yesterday it snowed. We're on the brink of Summer (30, 35 Degrees C) and there it is snowing up in the mountains. Crazy times.

I'd love to see snow one day, though. Looks very nice, and cold.

I mean, something like that. I like the sound of that!

We've had two minor snowfalls so far here. I enjoy snow, I like walking in it. I think my favourite part about it is the haunting calm and quiet you get while the light pollution reflects off the ground illuminating the snow in the air, causing the air to be a dull reddish colour, its fantastic.

I live in Texas. North Texas, though, so we get snow occasionally. Usually in February. It's only ever a few inches though. Enough to take pretty pictures and play in for about an hour or so.

Snow is neat and all, but I don't like cold weather much.

Title: Re: Snow
Post by: Melly on November 24, 2008, 08:01:09 AM
I'll take cold weather to hot any time. I hate how stuffingly blazing hot it can get around here. I hate being sweaty and overall highly unconfortable, like I'm in some kind of giant oven.

Cold, on the other hand, you can protect against, and I like comfy winter clothes, and sleeping under huge blankets. Staying home working on the computer in a cold afternoon with a cup of chocolate is also quite awesome.

So yeah, I'm far from a tropical person, even though I was born and lived here all my life.

I'll foruth that sentiment. It doesn't help that this has been the hottest autumn/winter Veracruz's ever had. Plus, some clothes for winter look awesome, but I can't wear them here, hell, not even trenchcotas because they are damn fucking hot here.

Title: Re: Snow
Post by: Lucaz on November 24, 2008, 09:38:21 AM
I add to what Melly said. But here it's template. It's like 30-35 Cº in summer, 2-8 Cº in winter. I like a lot more to sleep with a heavy blanket, than with just a sheet.

Last year it was the first time I saw snow, just a little, but it was the first time it snowed in like 40 or more years. I was happy for seeing it happen, but I didn't like it. Too cold and the snow was like, I don't know, meh.

Oh, I like all of those things. In fact, I just put my electric blanket back on my bed yesterday and I'm looking forward to going home so I can sleep under it. It's just that I'd rather not have to go outside at all if I got the choice. But I don't, since I still have to go to work and run errands and whatnot. I seem to be more vulnerable to the cold than others, as I'm shivering like a chihuahua if it gets below 50. If it gets any lower than 40, ten minutes outside and my hands are aching with the cold and heating them back up hurts too.

Cold weather is nice, but only because when you go inside you're that much warmer than you would be normally.

I haven't seen snow in 3 years, since I moved to Cali. I miss it so much. I've missed it since I first left. I knew I'd miss it before I left. I want to wake up and look outside and see a fresh blanket of white on everything, muting the hideous and disheveled cracked and stained concrete, and gently burying the dead leaves in a pure, clean, eight-inch grave, quietly whispering; "Come play, come play, come play," while I excitedly layer on five sweaters and prepare to, with simultaneous reluctance and lust, tear apart the blank slate and strew it across the world in somersaults, whoops and hollers. And then a moment silence, basking in the deafness heard on a muted world - one which has long desired to be so quiet, hushing the motors of distant cars, and the thrum of a broken streetlight, and the footsteps of passerby, letting naught be shouted but the awed calls of birds, flying soundless. And I'd be smiling.

...

 :(

Atmosphere is the only upside to snow.  Though it's a pretty big upside, so I'm more tolerant of snow that I used to be.  In the summer, Edmonton's river valley is lush and full of life; when winter arrives it becomes a silent, solumn place of intense beauty and reflection; a natural cathedral of sorts.  One cannot help but reflect in the beauty and perfection around; in the pink glow of sunset, and of the sillouettes of dormant trees.

Not true.  Snow reflects light everywhere, which brightens things up considerably.  Winter can be pretty dark without it, when you only get a few hours of daylight.  It's not so bad here really, we get about 6 currently I think, but further north the sun doesn't get up at all until next year.

Back to rainstorms here now btw.

You don't see it because I took the picture kind of late in the day, but that tree on the right is always shaking with wildlife, birds I'm feeding and the squirrels that take advantage of it  ;). This was our first 'real' snow, and already there's more than 40 cm everywhere. 1h30 from there, in Montreal, it looks like autumn, kind of crazy climate.

It's the temporal quality of if that makes it all the more special, at least for here. Like cherry blossoms.

It's 33 degrees (Fahrenheit) this evening. Much too cold for this time of year. We usually don't reach the thirties 'til about February. No snow to speak of, but plenty of "Oh god, why didn't I wear gloves!?"

Title: Re: Snow

33 farenheit? Isn't that the temperature where air becomes fluid and the heads of upset nintendo fanboys cool down and children are frozen in midair when jumping rope? Zero farenheit is like... space, isn't it? Where I live we have centigrades, and about -6 of them :)

33 Fahrenheit is just above 0 Celsius. You're probably thinking of Kelvin (~74 for liquid nitrogen, ~4 for liquid helium, ~3 for space, I think).

Maybe the internet knows (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fahrenheit).

Fahrenheit is a weird temperature scale where 32 degrees is the melting point of water and 212 degrees is the boiling point of water. It's sort of like inches and pounds in that it doesn't make sense, but we use it anyway.

I'm allowed to drive a car and I can drink alcohol, just not at the same time. Problem is that there are some things in this fine world I am knowingly ignorant about, here are a few of them:

The order of the months
The alphabet
The farenheit scale
Chinchillas
The Sopranos
The american presidents
Car engines
The mass of alpha centauri

and a few more. Now I can, however, erase farenheit from the list. It's some sort of underwater vacuum cleaner. And honestly I think I have a basic grasp of the alphabet too ???

I like to remain ignorant about the metric system myself. I've very nearly failed many a science class because of it.

The metric system is pretty simple. Think by logic and you will get it ;)

For example, 1 second is defined as "the duration of 9 192 631 770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the caesium 133 atom" (obviously), and the length of a meter metre meter is related to the speed of light, which is, of course, 299,792,458 m/s.

And as everyone already knows, the Amp is "the constant current which will produce an attractive force of 2×10–7 newton per metre of length between two straight, parallel conductors of infinite length and negligible circular cross section placed one metre apart in a vacuum," which leads to the obvious conclusion than an electron has a charge of -1.602 176 487(40)E-19 coulombs.

All very logical stuff.

Or are you talking about the whole "powers of ten" thing?

Yes. While the definitions are complex, this makes using the system fairly simple.

You don't really need to know the definitions.

It's just fine that 100cm are 1,00m and not as 100 inches are like 8 foot feet and 3 inches. The first needs me just to put the comma at the right place while the second needs me to divide by 12, take the reminder and put it together again.

Easier that knowing that an inch is 0.02778 yards, which is 0.9144 of the length of the path travelled by light in vacuum during a time interval of 1/299 792 458 of a second.

now that we have precise mesurment instruments, we don't need a system based on, "the width of a mans thumb", " the length of a man's foot" and "the distance between a mans nose and his outstreatched thumb" or " the length of a man's stride".

Meters are simple. People should stop using crazy ways to measure things that don't make sense.

Meters are good, but inches are wacky and funny!

Yeah, but then we'd have to find some other excuse for crashing expensive robots into Mars.

You Scandinavians need to find me a job and a place to live over there.

I'm tired of this North Carolina weather... 72 degrees in December for a week, then it's suddenly near-freezing. This happens only after a 6-month summer (May-September) that is so hot and humid you never want to go outside.

It snowed in November already, they were just flurries. The last "real" snow was in 2003 or 2005 I think. I've always had fond memories of snow because everything shuts down (meaning, school) when we get more than maybe two or three inches.

*ahem* well, I guess to fit in, I have to say something ridiculous involving measurements. One time, the snow got as high as two cubits! It was an El Nino year.

We finally, finally got snow here. I was almost late for my exam this morning because I had to dig my car out.

It's only about half a foot to a foot of snow, but this city is completely unprepared, so pretty much everything was shut down yesterday. Also I have no snow-appropriate clothes.

PORTLAND FINALLY GOT SNOW!

YUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

the funny thing about portland is that it's usually a rainy city, cold and wet but not quite cold enough for snow.  so we get an inch or two of snow and everyone in the city, including the newscasters, goes:

it's a blizzard, folks.  you're going to need to stock up on food and lock yourself in your house for weeks on end.  don't go outside, because the second you step across the threshold of your house, you'll be killed by snow.  don't drive.  your car will flip over 7 times because of the snow, and then it'll crash into a mother with her baby and you'll all die.

anyway though i was fucking thrilled to see snow

Not saying it isn't colder elsewhere, just saying I don't like the cold in general.

Although I would find some excuse to never leave the house in Winnipeg weather.

Winterpeg! Way to live in the Prairies! Enjoy your swing of 90oC between winter and summer(99oC with Windchill/Humdiex)! Largest temperature swing in the world.

We got some snow this morning in Seattle. It's quite a bit for this area. I was out for a walk and not two blocks from my place were a couple stranded buses and a three car pile-up. As I walked back, a jeep slid down a nearby hill backwards. Chaos, it was.

I made the mistake of going for an hour and a half hike in Edmonton today; I got back to my car with legs that were probably getting close to frostbite (my coat/gloves/scarf kept the rest of me pretty warm though).  I think it was probably worth it though, as it was a pretty nice hike.

In classic British fashion, we had some snow a few weeks ago but now it's almost Christmas we just have an abundance of driving winds and rain.

We'll probably get some snow again about February.

*shakes fist at the heavens*

apparently tomorrow portland is supposed to have a snowstorm coming in from the north - of EPIC proportions, if i'm to believe the nightly news.  they've been hyping it up for days, but then again school gets canceled in portland after one inch of snow.  we'll see what happens.
