Title: The official TIGSource dueling thread
Post by: Ivan on December 09, 2008, 03:41:24 PM
(http://www.krused.com/images/src/monkey_knife_fight.jpg)

Hear ye! Hear ye!

By the democratic amendment of the constitution of the People's Republic of TIGSource, all forum arguments shall henceforth be decided in a gentleman's duel, therefore ensuring that any misunderstanding of two parties results not in a primitive verbal bloodbath, but in two (2!) new indie games.

Official TigSOURCE duelling regulations, version 0.21:

  • duels shall be a challenge to create the best videogame
  • duels shall take place for a set timeframe, specified by the challenger. The default timeframe is two hours
  • the duel shall begin when the challengee accepts the terms, or at a time that the challengee agrees to.
  • duelists shall use no pre-existing assets or code, on their honour as gentlemen (using existing libraries and tools like game maker is ok)
  • the winner shall be decided by popular acclaim, on the merits of the games created
  • the duelists shall post their progress in this thread so as to please their potential judges with their craft
  • it shall be customary, but not required, to humiliate your opponent using the design of your game
  • a judge shall appoint himself/herself to moderate the duel, and adjudicate in cases where a clear winner cannot be found by popular acclaim
  • a gentleman may refuse to duel, but upon his honour he must yield on the point being discussed. In other words, to default is to be defeated.
  • if either of the gentlemen in question do not feel themselves proficient enough to create a whole game, they may choose graphics, music or writing as their weapon of choice, but do so at their own risk, as we all know that games are a superior medium.

The rules above are subject to change by public vote.

Firstly, I'll be the first to recognize that it may be too soon in the short history of the glorious TIGrena to propose changes and additions to the rules, but I believe we should also expand these dueling antics beyond programming, in the beautiful fields of art. So, a challenger and challengee may agree to duel in the glorious pictographic arena of beauty, instead of using code as their weapons.

Secondly, let me stress the importance of order on these matters, and let me propose the motion to delete all posts that are not considered:
a) Challenges
b) Challenge responses
c) Propositions for rules changes, until these changes has been either accepted or denied, henceforth these propositions shall be added to the main post of regulations, clarifying whether they have been accepted or not.

Hmm, you make an excellent point! But what if the two duelists differ in their choice of weapon abilities? A graphician battling a musician? A coder battling a graphician?  How can one judge such a battle?

Maybe we could use different scoring factors that fit into all categories. For example:

Musician's score
Concept*: [8/10]
Humiliation: [10/10]
Enjoyable...ness: [7/10]
and so on...

Graphician's score
Concept*: [8/10]
Humiliation: [10/10]
Enjoyable...ness: [7/10]
and so on...

See where I'm going here?

*I couldn't think of a good word for this; the best synonym I could think of was Uniqueness which isn't especially great.

Hmmm yes, but it seems like it would be much harder to humiliate someone with music, so I don't think that should be a category. Maybe just overall awesomeness?

Hehe. Good point. The awesomeness thing sounds good. Just be sure to include writing as an art form.

I'd guess you can use whatever you like, but you'd have more honour if you wrought the game in machine code, reaching into your computer's drum memory with a bar magnet to flip the eeproms one by one.

Title: Re: The official TIGSource dueling thread
Post by: Ivan on December 09, 2008, 09:31:19 PM
Very well, sir, consider yourself challenged!  8)

Now, since this is a friendly duel and we don't have a subject of contention, I say we pick a theme that we both like and then take 48 hours to make it. What say you?

Title: Re: The official TIGSource dueling thread
Post by: policedanceclub on December 09, 2008, 09:33:46 PM
I say 24 hours sounds better to me personally but it doesn't really matter.

What sort of a devilish theme would be suitable then?

Title: Re: The official TIGSource dueling thread
Post by: Ivan on December 09, 2008, 09:39:20 PM
Very well, 24 hours it is, then!

Here's an idea for picking a theme. We both pick two words, random or ones we want to do.

Then we enter them into Google Sets: http://labs.google.com/sets

The word that comes up after our 4 words is the theme of the duel.

Title: Re: The official TIGSource dueling thread
Post by: policedanceclub on December 09, 2008, 09:41:23 PM
Hmmm...

Sounds fairly good to me.

Should i vomit my random words here then?

Title: Re: The official TIGSource dueling thread
Post by: policedanceclub on December 09, 2008, 09:50:12 PM
?

well, here are my words anyway:

*giraffe
*robot

Title: Re: The official TIGSource dueling thread
Post by: Ivan on December 09, 2008, 10:23:45 PM
Sorry, had to go do something before I hit post.

My words were: doctor, fire

I put it into google sets, and it gives: police, though I think it ignored your words in making that set. Maybe this is a flawed way of picking a theme. :\

How about we just do robots?

Title: Re: The official TIGSource dueling thread
Post by: policedanceclub on December 09, 2008, 10:26:29 PM
OK!

So it's 24 hours starting now, to do robot themed game then?

Title: Re: The official TIGSource dueling thread
Post by: Ivan on December 09, 2008, 10:30:20 PM
Yes. Let's round it off and make the duel deadline 2AM EST, tomorrow, or to be technically accurate, 2AM EST, Thursday the 11th, 2008.

Best of luck to you, sir.  :gentleman:

I, almighty hippoespeonmoderator, approve of this thread.

Remind me not to upset cactus, cause if we both used GM I'd be annihilated.

Also, more than one duel may be in progress at once, but we should cap it at around 2 or 3 duels to keep it from becoming confusing for the viewers.

Also I'm not sure the judge is completely necessary. I think just a mod (me or Guert) or Derek can say whether there's any problem or something like that.

The only problem is that I suck with timezones big time. They just plain confuse me. Does anyone know of a handy website to see the difference between two timezones, and what timezone I'm actually in?

EDIT: Nevermind, found a good one.

EDIT2: Also, I challenge moi!

I challenge him on the grounds of insulting my honor and the glorious pokemon!

What say you moi? Are you gentleman enough to accept my honorable challenge?

I move that even if one duellist does not manage to finish the challenge, they have to submit whatever they do have, be it a mockup, a design document, or a chiptune. For us to marvel at what might have been, or laugh at the gap between their respective powers.

Nevertheless, here's what I have so far. I wouldn't call it a full game, but not bad for one night of work methinks.

These were awesome!

PDC gets the prize for most ironic title, and most finished game, and for the most indie concept, and for making me laugh, and for being on time.

Toastie gets the prize for best art (by a long way), and best potential for a full game.

It's close!

I think my vote would go for PDC's Funventure, in the spirit of the duel.

I actually think it's better if duels are used to solve ACTUAL disputes, since then there's more motivation to win, and less of this weak 'well done, opponent!' behaviour. People should use duels to solve questions like, 'which Final Fantasy was the best'?

I accept your challenge my good sir, since moi is far too much a coward to take me on.

I choose it to be a 3 hour game creation challenge. We must spend no more than 3 hours on our game. Do you accept these terms?

I also suggest we only choose the theme of the challenge right before we start, to make sure we don't get anything made in advance.

I can do it tonight, at around 18:00 or 19:00 EST. What say you?

This needs to happen!

But if I win, don't I prove that MMF2 is a good game-making program?  I don't think that challenge would solve anything.  The fact that I am still using MMF2 means I already lost that argument.  I will start to learn GameMaker or something... then I can challenge Kisguri.

Yes but is the point of duels to prove a point or to pretend you're proving a point while disguising the true objective of quickly making games for all to enjoy?

I also suggest we only choose the theme of the challenge right before we start, to make sure we don't get anything made in advance.

I can do it tonight, at around 18:00 or 19:00 EST. What say you?

Oh, almost forgot:

Your birth certificate is an apology from the condom factory

I SAY! (http://dpadstudio.com/uploads/Ohmy.gif)

I accept this challenge! Let us duel like gentlemen!

A few things we need to fix though. If we're going by EST, 18.00 for you would be 24.00 for me (you're about 6 hours behind.) I don't mind this as I'm going to stay up regardless, but I have to prepare to drive to the airport at around 4 am. This would probably work with a 3 hour contest, but I'm going to make my game in MMF2, and given the bugs that thing creates, I wanted to extend the time to 5 hours so it's actually possible to play.

We have two options then: Start earlier, or do the dual tomorrow when there is less driving involved.

Mmm... Well, actually, I checked my time and it seems I'm 3 hours ahead of EST. So at the time of this post it's 19:00 my time and 16:00 EST.

I could do it in an hour and a half from now, but that's as early as I can manage tonight.

EDIT: Actually, a storm seems to be brewing around my region. With the danger of power outages perhaps tonight won't be the best time afterall.

Any time will do really, but starting around 18.00 - 21.00 my time would be great. Any method of theme selecting we should use or just pick something and decide which one to go for?

And maybe each of us pick a theme, and we have to incorporate both into our games?

Or maybe someone else can nominate one.

We should train it to spout out genres when we say "genre". It would be like an random genre generator, only with "whore" thrown in every once in a while!

Do we really want porn games that badly?

I've just returned from the airport, so I need to go do the sleep thing, which means I won't be able to check back here for about eight hours. Either we both choose one theme each and post it before we start, or someone\something is appointed to pick a topic. I'm fine with it either way.

I'd say a mod needs to clean up the thread. See "moi incident" where improper upkeep of the thread caused his defeat by default, with some accusations falling on Melly, the challenger and moderator of intentionally obfuscating his challenge.

Also, I propose all time should be posted in GMT.

Also, I propose a theme: Timezones.

While I understand that it is too early for this to happen, I think that this would work better if It was a forum set up, and if the duel was longer, or had the option to be longer.  While i'm going off a single example, I think that the games produced could be more fun and more enjoyable if the ywere a little longer/more developed.

Well, I can safely say I'm not winning this one. Damn thing bugged up, and by the
time I had it fixed, there was no time to put in the artwork, or the rest of the game for that matter.

Simple idea. Guy arrives at airport with jetleg (timezones), and in a fit of bad temper decides to punch the crap out of everyone as they're getting to their flight. Point is to score as many combos as possible, (which is done by punching people into each other, and the explosion that follows multiplies,) before people can reach their boarding gates.

It's ugly and boring, but here it is. If I use a few more days on it, I bet I can make it playable.

Not much to it either. :P It's very simple, very short, and not all that pretty.

You live in a small, desolate planet far too close to the sun where the sunrise line that cycles it is a deadly force. You spent too much time outside your bunker tonight and the dawn has come while you were away from safety.

Neat entry Snake. I can see the making of a mighty fine game there. :gentleman:

I think the consept has potential, but I definitely needed more time. I should probably have suggested a 24 hour run like the previous group. Never mind though, it was fun. If anything it was good practice for speed pixeling.  :)

Like your entry. Nicely balanced puzzles and the fading sound was a nice touch. I can't seem to enter the crack before the bunker and it says X button when you use Z, but meh. Your game probably has less than half of what mine has. Sticks and stones.

All in all, a fine duel. Dashing display.  :gentleman:

Ah yes, that went completely over my head. I'll leave it there as to make it an authentic part of a 5 hour attempt.

I was also bogged down by platforming collision bugs and my solution is terribly unnoptimized. GM is weird with collision handling.

The game's beatable though. I've done it several times. :P

EDIT: Agh, wait, I see what you mean now. Damn I shoudn't have left that in it. You guys mind if I just fix that bit and make the game beatable?

EDIT2: Updated that post with two versions. The one submitted on time and a new, fixed one (made it beatable and with the proper jump button informed). Best to judge the first one still, to keep it fair.

I fully support promoting this thread to a sub-board. Can moderators add polls to existing threads? If so, here's how it could work: there are two fixed topics, one for challenges and the hall of fame. Contestants create threads for each duel and, at the end of the deadline, a mod adds a poll to the thread so that people can vote for their favorite. :)

Sorry I took so long to play these. I think Melly is the winner, for having a more interesting interpretation of the theme, and a more playable and addictive game. But I think Snake's design could be worked into something great, along the lines of Ikiki's Bokorin. The punching guys into the ceiling mechanic needs to be explored!

I vote for this to win.

More seriously, Sunrise. Sorry Snake, your game is sweet, and I really like the Every Extend-style combo system, but there's just not enough there in terms of mechanics.

Sunrise is pretty hardcore. The timed nature of it, where you only really find out at the end that you haven't been quick enough, reminds me of the last level of Braid. Only instead of the ability to rewind time, the game gives you a big 'Fuck You' in the form of fiery death. Nice!

I believe that it's very difficult to force duels to occur. We must simply wait and let them come to us. However, we must be vigilant for any slights that might be induced to bloom into fully-grown feuds.

Also, in future duels, I want to see games that are related to the subject of the original disagreement, or just plain insulting to the other party.

The drag'n'drop system has been said to be quite a copy of MMF's one. I don't know if this is true, for I haven't tried Construct. However I've debated about which of these two is better for so many times that I'm really tired of it.

Bleh, we should have a 'friendly duel' -thread or something. I'd love to have 1v1 24h competitions every now and then! But unfortunately I'm such a gentlemanly guy (or you are, who knows), that I seldom get to any real debates over which to duel.

I'm tempted to challenge both of thee to duel - you two (making one game) against one of me...

But I'm just as "off" as you are.  :-[

Honestly, it is pretty much fail. It started good enough, but Hideous kept being unable to keep working at the time. Eventually we both seemed to lose interest and steam. I honestly call it dead. I apologize to all.

Also are we going to pick a theme for both of us to use, or are we both going to wing it?

Well, I don't where Bood_War is but I finished my game! (http://kundor.org/pub/InterviewRockStar.zip) Use Windows Frotz (http://freespace.virgin.net/davidk.kinder/frotz.html) or Zoom (http://www.logicalshift.demon.co.uk/mac/zoom.html) to play it. It doesn't have all the features I wanted it to have, but it's still pretty playable.

Stargoat has challenged genericuser to a duel, for his grave insult against IRC grammar

The theme is Demakes...in Klik'n'Play!

The duel will start at the 24th of June.

Way back when KnP was first released I saw it on a shelf somewhere, and asked my father if I could have it, since the box made it sound pretty cool. He was like, whats wrong with the languages you already know? He was just being a dick, but I'm glad to have dodged that bullet at least until a few years later when a friend gave me a copy of TGF.

Stargoat presents

Quite a Bad Game

Destructobot is really unhappy. The other bots have invaded his secret base, and were teasing him, so he has no option, but to KILL THEM ALL.

This is a demake (not a terribly good one mind you...) of Error Free's "Tapan Kaikki" (http://www.errorfree.eu.org/index.php?source=games) - A violent top-down shooter where the objective is to "kill all".

Here it is, such as it is... I KILL ALL (http://willhostforfood.com/?Action=download&fileid=71644)

Addendum: Fuck KnP.

pfft, KnP is the epitome of cool.  :gentleman: What are you guys talking about?

And I'm assuming bad as in "baaaaaaaad" like Michael Jackson would ask "Who's BAD" *shamon*

Clickteam products aren't bad... they just need updated. :-\

Aye, this is very true. I had always been a huge supporter of Clickteam ever since I was a kid. But they just kinda, gave up. And I've moved on, too. If they would take a look at something like Construct, which I consider MMF only freaking godly, then updated their software then things would be great.

I just get tired of trying to trick MMF into doing things. =|

From what I hear about MMF, they're really overdue with some major overhaul of their software.

What we need to do is send an e-mail to Yves and butthead over in France and get like, everyone to sign it right... then as they read it we bust in their house and punch them in the face.

Yeah, right around TGF. For like ten years there was almost nothing new (apart from dumb shit like jamagic), they cockteased us with all this great stuff at convention announcements that never materialised, and then they did it again with MMF2. Construct started gaining momentum finally galvanised them but it's too little, too late when there's something better and freer available.

I loved the experience and the community drama and all that, but I've had a really low opinion of the software for a while now.

Title: Re: The official TIGSource dueling thread

I'm just waiting for Construct to reach 1.0 status to give it a whirl, though I believe it's Windows-only, and that's a bit saddening to me. :(

I have Windows, but I want Mac and Linux and Whatever users to play my stuff too.

Title: Re: The official TIGSource dueling thread

Oho. There hasn't been a duel in some time, huh?

I am challenging ForteDante to a 48-hour game-making duel about "growth" (treating it like a 24h contest, but with breaks).

The game content itself (ie. game logic code, art) must be created during that time period, but we can use existing engines and libraries to help. Not like these do, usually.

It starts on Saturday at 12:00 AM EST (GMT -5), and goes until Monday 12:00 AM EST.

It's ON. :D

Attention: I am paying it to you!

ForteDante; That was neat. I liked the ending. I like the idea of an all-consuming space-kitten, devourer of worlds. One day we will all wake up to find that a giant disembodied space-cat head has eaten our planet whole. That tickles me.

Overkill; I have never used this word before but yours was quite charming. The amount of urgency I felt to salvage the relationship was quite...sad, actually. But it was fun!

edit; oh snap, it loops! haha I thought I'd beaten it.

Any time there is an argument on the forums, both sides should form dev teams and settle who's right via game making.

Resulting in:
-less argument!
-more games!
-this thread being alive!
-this thread spawning more arguments about which of the duel games is better!
-and thus perpetuating itself!
-like a virus!
