Title: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Who's in? #LD48 Post by: _metamythical on August 21, 2014, 06:51:02 PM So, who's in?

Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Who's in? #LD48 Post by: Impmaster on August 21, 2014, 10:58:00 PM I'm in. I'm trying to make a 3d game for the first time with unity, so i might fail or i might make something really cool. Depends on how hard it is to pick up unity, cause so far i've only been doing tutorials, I haven't done any games on my own.
Also, one of the options is Alchemy. I'm pretty sure i've seen that same theme on the two other LD's i've been in. What's up with that? Explain to me why it could be a good topic? Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Who's in? #LD48 Post by: TautNerve on August 22, 2014, 12:08:28 AM I'm in, though there are some themes on the list that really turn me off,
hopefully none of them gets picked. Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Who's in? #LD48 Post by: Julien on August 22, 2014, 12:22:50 AM I'd love to :(
Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Who's in? #LD48 Post by: bombjack on August 22, 2014, 12:42:06 AM Probably in depending on subject and ideas that comes in my mind
Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Who's in? #LD48 Post by: oodavid on August 22, 2014, 01:30:14 AM I'm really tempted, but the event has creeped up on me and my weekend is kinda full already. If a theme really tickles me I'm in.
Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Who's in? #LD48 Post by: PixelMonkey on August 22, 2014, 02:14:53 AM I am possibly/probably in. Last LD I didn't manage to finish, and I have even LESS time this one, but it's worth trying anyway.
Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Who's in? #LD48 Post by: Whiskas on August 22, 2014, 07:40:37 AM I'm also in. First LD48, I wanted to have a small break from C++ so I plan on using Phaser even though I just got into it yesterday.
Good luck to everyone and don't forget to have fun  Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Who's in? #LD48 Post by: Panurge on August 22, 2014, 07:44:02 AM I'm in for sure, the summer jam is the only one I have the time for. Last year I did quite well in the humour category with 'Gone in Ten Seconds' but my coding skills have improved since then so this year I'm hoping to try my hand at something a bit more ambitious in terms of gameplay.
One of the things I find most beneficial about LD is rating and commenting on other people's games. I always try to give as much feedback as I can and I think the act of analysing a game, considering where it worked and where it didn't, is really valuable experience. Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Who's in? #LD48 Post by: barley on August 22, 2014, 08:22:20 AM I'm in!
Going by the results of the first 4 rounds of voting, I'm going to guess Connected Worlds will win (it got like 4-5 times the net positive votes all the other themes got), or Day and Night. I'd love to be wrong about that, though, because they're both kind of dull and there are going to be a ton of really similar games from them. Although I suppose that's the same with 90% of themes. I'll be using Unity, and I'll probably do a 3D game since it went pretty well last time! One of the things I find most beneficial about LD is rating and commenting on other people's games. I always try to give as much feedback as I can and I think the act of analysing a game, considering where it worked and where it didn't, is really valuable experience. I definitely agree with this; the past 2 LDs that I've done I've voted on the 100 games it takes to get the gold coolness badge.Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Who's in? #LD48 Post by: zath on August 22, 2014, 02:44:00 PM I'm also in! My first compo ever and I'm really excited. I'd love to see themes like Alchemy, Growing or Do No Harm. Not sure if I manage to finish anything, but it doesn't matter. I see it as a break from corporate work and it's gonna be fun for sure.
Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Who's in? #LD48 Post by: Franklin's Ghost on August 22, 2014, 05:41:33 PM I'm in for my second attempt at Ludum Dare.
Enjoyed the experience of the last one and was a great learning experience. Not sure about the theme of Connected Worlds though. Will have to brainstorm some ideas. Good luck everyone. Am I even allowed to use a game engine? Can someone reply if you know the answer to either question?

Am I even allowed to use a game engine? Can someone reply if you know the answer to either question? I'm pretty sure you're just supposed to zip-up the entire project. There's something about it in the rules, but you are definitely allowed to use Unity.I'm in for the 4th time I think, I haven't been keeping track. Hopefully this will be the last time I use GMstudio, as I'd like to learn something new. Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Am I even allowed to use a game engine? Can someone reply if you know the answer to either question? Zip up the project (or host it on github/bitbucket), but make sure not to include any paid-for assets. If you're doing the Jam, that includes things like art/audio/scripts/editor extensions/etc., but if you're doing the 48-hour competition, you're only allowed paid-for code libraries. Make sure they aren't in your source zip because that'll likely breach their license. Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Since it's other-worlds, you could have it so that every time you pass through a portal, a shadow comes out of the one you enter. A bit like the mirror in prince of persia (orig.) Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Who's in? #LD48 Post by: Slader16 on August 23, 2014, 06:47:01 AM I couldn't make it this time, I'm packing up for Cali! :handmetalL: :tiger: :handmetalR:
Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Who's in? #LD48 Post by: jgrams on August 23, 2014, 07:16:31 AM I seem to be making a portal ripoff. What are you guys making? I got this flash of Helios driving his sun-chariot through space with planets on leads sort of like walking a whole pack of dogs that are swirling around you. So I'm trying to make something out of that. I'm thinking he's like a moving company: "Star going nova? Neighborhood not what it used to be? Let us whisk you away to a new one, lock, stock, and planet." But I've never done a jam before, don't have a lot of time this weekend, and I'm still struggling to get the mechanics where I want them, so we'll see if I get it playable enough to submit... But I'm having fun with it. Edit: Meh. Fail. I didn't quite manage 7 hours of work (was expecting to have 10 or 12), and that just wasn't enough time (for me) to have something very playable... But that's OK. I don't think I'm much of a game competition person. Even without having any practice, I didn't feel like it was particularly difficult to make a game in a short period of time. And I kept wondering why I was wasting time making a game based on a random theme from the internet instead of something that actually mattered to me. The brainstorming ideas part was fun, but I do that sort of thing all the time anyway. So it was interesting, and I'm glad I took a stab at it, but I doubt I'll bother with it again... Finished it. It kinda sucks, but it's the first time I've tried 3d. It's a 2 minute walking game where you have to get to the end, with "puzzles". Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Who's in? #LD48 Post by: Franklin's Ghost on August 24, 2014, 10:18:14 PM Nice first 3D effort.
Really struggled to get started so ended up wasting most the first day. Ended up deciding on making a simple dating gameshow where different beings from different worlds compete to make a connection with the bachelor. Wish I'd had more time to put more depth with the responses but starting running out of time. (http://i.imgur.com/yfnkRMu.png) Not super happy with it; I really ran out of time. Spent a big chunk of the 48 hours trying to wrangle Blender since I'd completely forgotten how to use it from last LD. Didn't get around to music or SFX either. Still happy that I stuck it out, though! Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Who's in? #LD48 Post by: SelfTitled on August 25, 2014, 01:49:39 AM Here's my entry. (http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/wp-content/compo2/thumb/754a580e323b380cb266eea2c18a7458.jpg) Unfortunately due to technical difficulties with MMF2 I can only offer a windows file, I'm a bit worried that this prevents lots of potential players from playing the game, but not much I can do at this time. Maybe in a couple of days if I have time I can work on solving this issue... Anyways If you have a few minutes to spare it would be awesome if you check it out. Loved all the games posted in this thread so far, great job everybody Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Also the bachelor game sounds hilarious hah. I wish I had some more time to polish some aspects, especially the music and the sounds, which have been rushed. Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Managed to finish in time even though I had a mental breakdown right before the end when my girlfriend trivialized the whole game strategy by just randomly clicking. Then I iterated on the concept and managed to turn it into a pretty sweet game. Hella difficult though. I made a hardcore randomly-generated platforming experience/fish-jumping simulator. You climb up into a portal repeatedly in search of the one universe that has an actual ground. I'm pretty satisfied with how it turned out, but I wish I'd had the time to make some variation between levels. Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Who's in? #LD48 Post by: Panurge on August 25, 2014, 06:23:57 AM I've played so many awesome games already today. Seems like a really high standard all round. Hypnohustler's softly floating turd has been a highlight so far.
I'm quite pleased with my own entry this year. Actual honest-to-goodness gameplay has never been my strong point so I decided to do a platformer/shooter and I think it turned out pretty well, although opinions are divided on the controls. If anyone would like to check it out, here 'tis: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-30/?action=preview&uid=21166 (http://i.imgur.com/sCDrodu.png) Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Who's in? #LD48 Post by: smizmeal on August 25, 2014, 06:34:25 AM Well I finished my first Ludum Dare submission:
Dude Launch ----------- Ludum Dare page: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-30/?action=preview&uid=41893 (http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-30/?action=preview&uid=41893) Direct link: http://smizmeal.itch.io/dude-launch (http://smizmeal.itch.io/dude-launch) ----------- Launch Dudes to the Moon! (safely) The central mechanic is to follow the moon using your boat, then position the ladder to launch dudes into the gravity of the low-orbiting moon. Try not to lose your dudes to the deadly moon or rolling tides: (http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/wp-content/compo2/375043/41893-shot1.png) I was really inspired by the "connected worlds" theme to make something silly and fun. I'm a programmer, not an artist, so I embraced it and made an arcade-y type game. My biggest inspiration was a story by Italo Calvino (La Luna by Pixar is based on it http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120217231001/pixar/images/2/21/La-Luna-Ladder.jpg (http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120217231001/pixar/images/2/21/La-Luna-Ladder.jpg)). And another was the old DOS game called Night Raid: (http://www.abandonia.com/files/games/845/Night%20Raid_1.png) Next time I think it would be fun to team with an artist and do the Ludum Dare Jam instead of the Compo. By the way, I'm new to TIGForums (just posted in the Obligatory Introduction thread), and I'm really just blown away by the level of quality of the work here. Here's looking forward to future game jams and learning from your progress threads! Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. You manage the Space Gate Command base, buy soldiers and researchers, send them off world to fight the goa'uld and jaffa fighters, steal their technology, research it, then sell it for profit :) The off world part of the game is a simple tactical RPG style thing, though I didn't have time to add in special moves so it is just move and attack =P (with some extra equipment like medikits and shields being used automatically). Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Who's in? #LD48 Post by: Impmaster on December 04, 2014, 06:35:37 AM It's cause the twitter hashtag to discuss ludum dare used to be that. They changed it this ludum dare, I guess cause people in the jam were hurt. But hey, I'm gonna compete this time. I feel the spirit in me. Hopefully I make something good this time.
Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Who's in? #LD48 Post by: oahda on December 04, 2014, 07:01:43 AM I see both that and #ld72 (and #ludumdare). What's the point of a hashtag on this forum, tho?
My girlfriend, with whom I did last LD over Skype, stayed with me in my apartment up until last weekend and will be returning before the next, but won't be here during LD weekend so that we can jam our socks off. :-X Typical. I think I'll just turn this into my own thing, as another learning experience, because I often try to learn a new tool or framework or just get better at something for each LD. This time the idea is to install Unreal and play with that, if my computer can handle it. If not, I might just bail out entirely this time. All the finalist themes are meh this time and if the joke theme wins I'm definitely not up for it this time. Joke themes were never funny. Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. Who's in? #LD48 Post by: Impmaster on December 05, 2014, 06:10:51 AM Does the snowman theme look weird to anyone else? It makes it more difficult for people who are bad at art, I feel, because they can't do abstract art and game mechanics.

I've made Orion, a kind of pixel space sim :D It's web based, so very easy to try out. I love the comments people are giving, so emotional! :'( http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-31/?action=preview&uid=8733 (http://ludumdare.com/compo/wp-content/compo2/407933/8733-shot0.PNG) (http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-31/?action=preview&uid=8733) Title: Re: Ludum Dare 30 in 24 hours. The response has been fantastic so far, and many people ask me to continue the game, but I'm not very sure about it.. I know finishing a game is a hard hard task, that requires time, health and money (things I do not have in abundance), and I don't wanna do it if I'm not gonna finish.. :P EDIT 12/16: I'm quite disappointed after knowing that the actual Orion's cockpit is not full of levers, buttons, knobs and switches, but a bunch of touch screens -_- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cM4qKfNuFX4 If I wanted to continue the game, I'm not sure how.. Should I be faithful to the reality, or keep on with the initial idea? mm.. Ok, I've made a greenlight page for it: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=357103069 |
