Last year I stayed with Fish and Petri at the Hosteling International Downtown place, it's super cheap and it's fine. I'm staying there this year too.

its neat, it has free wi-fi, free bagels and its 10 minutes away on foot from the center.

I'm staying there as well this year (with Erik, Kian and Martin). For the money you pay it is an awesome place. It's close the convention center, has free wi-fi and is dirty cheap.

That being said, I wished I had learned of this hostel option before I did my own reservations. Currently I have no partners, but if anyone is interested in a room semi-near the convention center (less than a mile away) give me a PM!

I stayed at the YHA youth hostel in Montreal and it was fucking amazing. It was like one endless party. The whole city was.

I just booked a room at Hotel Union Square. I'm not 100% sure it's where I'll be staying since I'm supposed to be coming in on a booking with one of my clients, but they're taking their time and rooms are drying up...

FYI in 05 i got a room at my current hotel (union square) and the heater was broken. it would turn on full blast for an hour then turn off completely... didnt sleep at all.

so be sure to ask for a room that lets you sleep.

Past experience suggest that jetlag will ensure I get plenty of sleep, regardless of room. It doesn't say exactly when in the day this will happen though...

The last time I was in SF, a cool homeless guy named Uncle K.K. guided me to the Japanese-operated Aida Hotel (http://www.hotelaidaplaza.com/) on 7th and Market.  Very close to the Moscone, and $77/night cash, + $15 extra for your own private bathroom.  It's old (1920's?), funky, and clean.  And there's a great, cheap, New York-style Pizza place right next door, and a walk-up pastry bakery across the street, operating  24 hours a day, which also sells cigarettes.

K.K. also turned me onto Zapp (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQfZRRRo_8A) and Brass Construction (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hA87igVobdU).


I thought she was imaginary too when the first time I walked into her apartment and saw the vintage Owl clock above her kitchen table, and then later when I saw her hand-sewed Owl purse...  What can I say?

We found an apartment for the 5 of us in the end. Could be... cosy.

so if I'm going, I would probably try and get a room at hostel adelaide.. I stayed there in 2005 and had an amazing time. It was just incredibly cool. It's close to the conf.center as well.

It was a 4 bed room (2 stacked beds) with a private bathroom. I can't comment on the dorms, but I'd say if you can get a private room you'd better get that, it's not like it's super expensive.

Edit: anyone interested in sharing a room at the SF downtown hostel? Cost would be about $39.50 / night with shared shower, or $44.50 / night with private shower, per person. PM me, or send me an e-mail if you're interested.

chrisL: How many beds are there in the private rooms? Would it be possible to stay three there?

I think ~$40 is still a bit much for sleeping, with the annoyingly strong US dollar, but if the private room was split three ways it would be quite awesome. We'd only need to find another guy, of course :)

Anyway, I'd say I'm interested, but I'm going to make my final decision on wednesday.

AFAIK, it's two single beds in the private room. Unless you want to cram another dude in your bed, I don't think it'll fit 3 ;)

Yeah - the US dollar is kind of killing every other currency right now - kinda sucks. Aside from the slightly cheaper dorm room, the private room is the cheapest in SF afaik.

I did some final checking. we went with the dorm. There are 4 people max per "dorm room" which is just two stacked bunk beds. I'm not sure if there's a bathroom connected to the room, but it wouldn't surprise me. Essentially, if you have 4 people I'd get the dorm room, it's about $400 cheaper. And even if you didn't have 4, it probably wouldn't be a hassle or anything.

Yeah, I think I'll go with the dorm... Maybe we can find enough people to fill them up. But even if we don't, the worst thing that can happen is that you have to share the room with three snoring, smelly hitch-hikers... but who's to say that's worse than sharing the room with three snoring, smelly tiggers, covered in mantigsauce  :gentleman:

Put in a reservation at the Adelaide hostel dorms - hopefully I'll see a few tigsource folks there.

Anyone still looking for a place to stay? I booked a room here (http://www.beresford.com/beresford/Default.htm) with two twin beds, but the person supposed to be splitting it with me fell through.

Anyhow it'd be $44.50 a night, I've got the room starting on Sunday the 22nd for 6 nights.

I had to cancel my reservation at the downtown hostel (:'() because my dates changed when I won an all-access pass. Plus my wife decided to come along, and we discovered that it's actually cheaper to stay in a cheap hotel than it is to book 2 dorm beds.

For anyone else looking for cheap accommodation for two, know that the weekly rate at the Park Hotel (http://www.parkhotelsf.com/park/) is only $250+tax for a room with shared bathroom. That's where we're staying. We've heard great things about the hotel, it's in the perfect spot right between Chinatown and the Moscone center, plus it's run by Chinese people who can ingratiate us with the wild underbelly of USA's one true Chinatown.  :handthumbsupL: :handthumbsupR:

Woah, nice find!!  That's almost $100 cheaper per person for the week.

Last year we stayed at the Baldwin Hotel, which is just a couple buildings down from there.  The weekly rate was $600 for 2 doubles plus tax, although this year it was too far into the spring for them to give us the rate.  But Sutter is a good neighborhood - safe at night and a 10-15 min walk to Moscone.  :)

I need a place to stay the night of Tuesday the 24th. If anybody has space and doesn't mind putting me up for the night after getting silly at the IGDA party, let me know. I'm a happy drunk.

Hmm, it's probably too late for this, but maybe it's something to keep in mind for next year? I can't really recommend hotel Aida. I've been there before and they had crackheads wandering in and it generally seemed pretty derelict. If you don't mind staying in a roach hotel like that and you want a really cheap one, I'd like to recommend this place:

It's right between Chinatown and the Financial District, with North Beach nearby. It's about a 15 minute walk to the Moscone Center from here, but it's in a relatively safe, clean, and quiet part of downtown. The hotel itself is no-frills; I lived there for over a year and yes, the review on that page is mine (don't let the review scare you, though, it would be a fine place to stay for a week, just not more than a few months) Cactus visited me there last year and he can attest to the small size and somewhat squalid conditions... Although for $150 a week it can't be beat.

They're careful about who they let in, too, so you don't have to worry about crackheads or anything like that. The only crazy people there have been living there for 30+ years and are pretty harmless. Mostly just old people. Call in advance for openings.
