Theme is "An Unconventional Weapon".

I've got a problem.

I came up with an idea that would work great for the theme, is fun, and is at least somewhat creative.  But for some reason, it just doesn't really excite me at all.  Like, I've come up with tons of ideas for it and it came to me pretty readily, but idk if I should force myself to do it or try something else.

Just do it indeed. I'm kind of finished already, because the rest of my weekend is spoken for. It's a terrible awful abomination of a game, but that's OK!

Looking forward to playing some real entries :D

Post by: oahda on April 18, 2015, 04:04:43 AM
I've barely started on the other hand, because I went to sleep about the time the theme was announced and got up 8 hours later.

I've got a basic idea. I've got a theme of my own, so to say. An atmosphere and a concept. But mechanics-wise I'm lost so far. So we'll have to see.

Decided to do it in JavaScript with canvas what with all the blegh happening with Chrome and Unity right now.

Might not finish this time. We'll see.

Post by: Tifu on April 18, 2015, 05:14:08 AM
I don't really have a great idea for the theme, so I'm just going to do some practice in Unity on third person game stuff and see what comes of it. I'm thinking you will beat people up, and then use their unconscious/dead bodies as weapons to beat more people up >:D in a... light hearted cartoon violence kind of way!?

Do it!

I've gotten a little further now and Eva made a sprite for me so I feel like I'll at least have to try now. I haven't ever failed to successfully submit at least something, so we'll see.

Well, less than one day of work left!

I've been able to painfully comes with an idea tied to the theme, and I've spent the whole day coding a prototype with ugly programmer art (right now, the game is all made of bright colored squares). After a good night's sleep, I'll try to work on the gfx and sfx tomorrow!

Good luck to everyone, I'm eager to play your entry by the end of tomorrow!

Oh. That would explain some of the stress I'm seeing here. I'm doing the jam. I always do. Another 24 hours. So do that if you're feeling rushed, JWK5.

this is my first LD and was wonder what's the rules with audio? Can I use sound samples? If I mod them, is that ok? I'm kinda stuck with sfx, since synthesised sfx don't really fit my game.

As long as its license (or lack of one) allows you to, that's good for the jam at least. I never do the compo, so I don't know exactly how much stricter the rules are there, but everything is here for you to read: http://ludumdare.com/compo/rules/

I've used one royalty-free sample so far that only demanded credit, which I'll give, and I've edited it a bit myself anyway. I also used one free sample from iLife I had on my computer. And of course I didn't record the music software's instrument samples for the music I made. That would be ridiculous.

Just uploaded my first proper W.I.P. screencap with audio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNRLxzpgrxA

So I ended up not following you guys' advice and made a game with a totally different idea.

And it ended up being the greatest thing I've ever created so you all can die in a fire.

JK, you guys are beautiful.

My game is done, too.

Cellular Warfare (http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-32/?action=preview&uid=7284)

It's basically Conway's Game of Life, if Game of Life were a puzzle/strategy video game in which you crush your enemies. Contains a map editor; if you make anything fun, please upload it, I'd love to see it.

Interface work took a very long time this time around. Maybe I should code up some interface library for easier button handling or something for next time.

Finished my entry too, right on the deadline (time runs too fast!).

It's called Weapons Regulator (http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-32/?action=preview&uid=29773), and you play as a neutral regulator on a battlefield, with the mission to seize any "unconventional weapon" you'll see from the hands of soldiers. The "weapons convention" changes over time, as new weapons are discovered by soldiers. Beware of the stray bullets! :)

Quote
The King has left the castle leaving the front gate wide open. You are a wizard left in charge. Lacking physical strength you were unable to operate the gate, so your only option is to use your spells on any approaching adversary.

Your voice is a weapon as uttering a mere word will send your opponent towards the sky in bits and pieces!

Your objective is to survive 10 oncoming waves of enemy lemmings. Click on a lemming and choose the appropriate spell. Reverse and stop lemmings to create larger groups to blow to smithereens. Upgrading spells makes them restore faster and have stronger effects.

Hi everyone !

Here is our game : GENEMON (http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-32/?action=preview&uid=30677) !
It was such a real pleasure to give rise to this game and we sincerly hope you'll enjoy it !

"Embody a Bio-hacker owning an High-Tech Genegun able to give rise to Genemons, some genetically modified creatures built up to struggle against some others, capable to fuse into new ones to fight into explosive underground arena battles."

This was the first Ludum for our team and we were pleasantly suprised by how the community was nice and very encouraging.
Actually, if the community keeps expressing its good appreciation for the game, we are seriously thinking to develop it further  this summer.
From this perspective, we’d like to implement an online multiplayer mode, new Genemons fusion trees and many other features !

Can’t wait to take part in the next Ludum Dare !

Have fun with your Genegun.
See you soon ! :D

I'm more of a tourist here on TIG, didn't see this thread! :P

I also made an entry, but watching and playing all these games make me feel like a kindergarten in college. :-[

It's the first time I took part in LD and first time I've actually "finished" a "full" game, so I can't expect much from me :P. Will try to improve for the post-jam version and, also, practice more to get better.

BTW, my rushed, crappy and laggy entry is here: http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-32/?action=preview&uid=50909 (http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-32/?action=preview&uid=50909), and is about a strawberry that shoots its own seeds at random while spinning.

Forgot to post my entry for the comp here.

Had a crazy weekend during the Ludum Dare but somehow was able to finish something.

Battle of Tolzford

Is inspired by the old final fantasy games. I just wanted to approach the idea of the player having to continue an existing game, stumbling upon a monster and being thrown into battle. What is the unconventional weapon?

I thought the praise for this game was exaggerated, but now that I've played it I know it really isn't. If you haven't played this game yet, you absolutely must play this game. Best jam game I've played in a very long time.

This is my first Ludum Dare both as a creator and as a player. The amount and variety of games created is both awe inspiring and exhausting. I've only played a bit over 1% of all games submitted, and I've been everything from a bully victim, a carrot, cupid, a spaceship drawn on a chalk board and so many other things. I've also lost count of all the ways I've fought zombies (zombies are "in" this year?)

My own game (where you get to be a cloud) can be found at:
http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-32/?action=preview&uid=51939
(Note: It has no zombies. Sorry about that)

Results are in!

Really happy with how this LD went; the best I've done overall, except for when I made InterSection and got 3rd in innovation
(http://i.imgur.com/7IXMe1x.png)
and made it to the top 100!

Well, I actually scored ever so slightly lower overall this time than last time, but this time I got into the top 100 on audio, graphics, and fun.

Well, I finally managed to reach the Top 100 Overall with Weapon Regulator (http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-32/?action=preview&uid=29773) :)!
(at the last place, but hey, I still have a lot of room for improvement ;))

I've been improving in almost all points (except Innovation, down from #20 to #60) since my two previous entries, so I'm very happy with the results (especially in Fun and Overall!).

Congrats everyone for your games, the quality level rise dramatically with each new edition of the LDJAM!

Pls, the important thing is you got another project in your portfolio, a bit more experience and a new concept tried out! :handthumbsupR:

My game this time was not much, but it did end up as #12 for mood, which was really the most important aspect of it, as the rest wasn't really much of a game, and it was very short. Really surprised to see a position as high as #66 for audio, tho, since that's my weakest skill. I'm in no way a musician. But I guess it did go along pretty well with the mood. So I'm happy. Well, besides the statistics I dug up. That's not happy. Let us all hope for change.

August next.

Got my results for this Ludum Dare. Happy with humour but had been hoping to crack top 100 with some other stuff but I always seem to go well in one area while the others suffer. Next time I might try and actually target the fun aspect more. Have learnt not to read too much into the scores though and as Prinsessa says, use it more as being forced to create a project for the portfolio.

Congratulations everyone though.

I would rather that it shows that the overall level of LD is rising quite fast, so the results (and especially ranks) are not a real judgement of your game, it's the comments and the exposure that matters the most (after having created a game, that goes without saying :)).

By-the-way, thanks a lot for your in-depth comment about my game, it was really helpful to me to read such a very sharp analysis of the GD issues in my entry.

Most of my reviews were one or two liners about how my game was hard, fun, ugly and didn't support keyboard.

Also I got a pretty average score, which is encouraging for my first LD ever!

That's my big project right now. All you can do with mouse is move around (and it's broken ATM because I've been doing changes to the input system after implementing that). I got myself two gamepads that I can connect to my computer before I started implementing more mechanics and ATM gamepad is the only way to control anything. I'll fix mouse and keyboard support later, tho. c;

Weird you didn't fix both for a little jam game tho. I wouldn't expect most people to have, or at least be bothered to connect, computer gamepads just to play a little jam game.

Fjuffy (http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-32/?action=preview&uid=51939) actually managed to swirl /h(er|is)/ way into the innovation top 100 of the compo entries. This is a lot better than I could hope for on a first Jam.

   Coolness   58%
#76   Innovation   3.94
#103   Theme   3.97
#305   Mood   3.24
#466   Humor   2.85
#477   Overall   3.25
#488   Fun   3.13
#503   Graphics   3.13

Also – if have not already done so – please keep postintng your games in this thread. The rating season may be over, but I'm still playing stuff.   :handjoystick: :eyebrows: :handanykey:

I'm a little disappointed with my score but it was my first LD so shouldn't be too hard on myself I suppose.

Pooper the Pig! (http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-32/?action=preview&uid=41490)

#191   Humor       3.46
#305   Theme       3.65
#498   Fun       3.12
#506   Audio       2.78
#558   Graphics    3.04
#670   Innovation  2.92
#739   Overall     2.96
#746   Mood        2.70
#1497   Coolness    45%

LD was was fun and has really helped to motivate myself, so that is a plus.

Title: Re: Ludum Dare 32 (begins April 17th)

I think it's a percentage of the maximum ammount of games that count towards getting more reviews.

Title: Re: Ludum Dare 32 (begins April 17th)
Post by: VDZ on May 19, 2015, 11:45:16 AM
That's not a bad average considering there were almost 3000 games.

...of which only 1353 were in the compo (that's the amount it's compared to), and 694 entries in jam and compo combined did not get enough votes to get a score. Guessing half of those were compo, that means the score is compared to 1005 other entries.

So yes, it is a bad score. Though I wasn't a fan of Pooper the Pig, I do feel it deserved a higher score, particularly in Fun. Meanwhile, it got freaking #191 in Humor while the only humor in the game is that it's about poop.

Sometimes I just don't get LD voters.

It's just that there aren't enough of them to provide a proper normal curve.

Gee, I should've remembered that jam and compo are rated separately. Wasn't aware of the fact that some games weren't even counted tho.

Although I can understand your disappointment with your score, you should think about the people who didn't event got the 20 votes required to be ranked - I've tried to rate some of these games following "please save these games" posts on the last voting day, and some of them were actually quite good or interesting.

I don't know how games end in this state (I guess it's due to low coolness), but to me the most sad outcome for a game is no one playing it, isn't it?

I don't think the scores really matter. When you browse the high scoring games a lot of them aren't any better than some of the low scoring games. I think when voting people rate genres/graphics style/devs they like higher than those they don't. Metrodvanias, for example, always seem to rate highly.

Anyway here's my scores

Looks like I was wrong about the cutoff - 17 votes was the minimum requirement for ratings, not 20. This means only 555 entries are unrated.

Every single one* of the unrated entries' creators have rated less than 6 games themselves. 346 (62%) of them rated no games at all.

* The sole exception purposely unchecked all categories and as such did not receive any votes.

7 people got away with not voting on anything and still got into the ratings, because popularity trumps all and life is not fair.

Suppose its best to focus on positives. Some people actually took the time to play my game and comment (mostly positive), which is a complement in itself.

Feel kinda sad about games that diddn't get played though :( makes me think of puppies being left out in the snow.

Maybe people who got no votes didn't tell people about the game, I guess. Can't just upload it and call it a day and expect people to find it among so many other games. Gotta tweet it or something.

And rates games too!

Thanks VDZ for the detailed data. Honestly, I still don't understand how people enters Ludum Dare without rating ANY games at all. I mean, of course rating games takes time a not every one can rate 100+ games, but, come on, rating at least 5-10 games in 21 days isn't such a hard commitment when you already spent 48-72h to create a game?

Or maybe some people simply didn't understand the "rate other people's games to get your game rated" rule?

I did not to any thing like that (except posting my game on this forum, and the Swedish equivalent) and I got mote votes than I placed votes. Getting votes only correlated in time with me voting on other games. Every time I took time to vote, my "coolness" increased and my game would pop up on the front page of game voting section for a few minutes.

I don't use twitter (or any of those modern social media thingamajigs). I'm just assuming they don't help much since only participants get to vote any way. But I might be wrong. Does anyone who tweeted their game have any numbers to share?

Title: Re: Ludum Dare 32 (begins April 17th)

Tweeting about my entry got a few people to play/rate it but not many. My game was also feature on Warp Door and IndieGames.com and they got absolutely 0(zero) ratings from that exposure. I'd imagine if a few notable Ludum Dare devs tweet about your game that'll help, but honestly playing and rating lots of games is your best bet.
