Title: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: Terry on February 18, 2009, 05:24:40 PM (http://distractionware.com/blog/images/2009/feb/rpgdxlofi.png)
Heya! A site that I'm affiliated with is running a contest-like-event (jam) next weekend, and I thought some people here might be interested in it! The theme is simple - in 48 hours, create an RPG. (http://forums.rpgdx.net/viewtopic.php?t=2095) Your design should be informed by the jam's theme : "LoFi". Other than that, there are absolutely no restrictions on how you approach things! Even the deadline is flexible - if you want to start a little earlier you can, or later if you're busy on that friday and want to make a weekend out of it you can do that too - and thanks to the way things are over at RPGDX you can pretty much do as much preparation as you want on your engine and assets (the point being that all you should really be making during the jam's 48 hours is actual game content). Trying to create an RPG in a mere 48 hours is one of the most breathtaking, life affirming actions you can attempt! That is a slight exaggeration! Still! Nothing quite shakes you out of your comfort zone so effectively as this - no genre is as ripe for experimentation and reinvention as the RPG (http://www.indiegames.com/blog/2009/02/freeware_game_pick_30_second_h.html). :) Really hope to see some of you take part in this! [more info here] (http://forums.rpgdx.net/viewtopic.php?t=2095) Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: increpare on February 18, 2009, 05:51:02 PM I'm definitely in :)
Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: TheBlackMask on February 18, 2009, 06:16:36 PM Awesome. I'm in.
Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: Farbs on February 18, 2009, 08:15:54 PM Very very tempting.
I might be in. Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: Chris Whitman on February 18, 2009, 08:26:14 PM I'm also very tempted! I might actually be dropping a course as my current workload is killing me, so that would free up time for things like this.
Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: Seth on February 18, 2009, 09:09:20 PM I wouldn't mind teaming up with someone and doing pixel art and some writing for a quirky RPG loosely inspired by the MOTHER series, if someone else can code and put it together
Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: professor dead on February 19, 2009, 07:25:36 AM terry bear,
(1) i assume rpg's can be like heavy-rpg metroidvanias? (2) do i have to join the rpgdx forums? Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: Terry on February 19, 2009, 09:25:49 AM Excellent! I can't wait till next weekend! ;D
terry bear, (1) i assume rpg's can be like heavy-rpg metroidvanias? (2) do i have to join the rpgdx forums? (1) Sure, any kind of genre splicing or reinvention is fine! (2) You don't have to do anything you don't want to do. :wizard: Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: Chris Whitman on February 19, 2009, 10:00:43 AM I'm thinking I'd like to take a page from the one-room platformer and do a one-room RPG. Maybe I'll split it up into three 'chapters' a la Live A Live or something (time permitting), but for each one have the whole thing take place on one screen, so each chapter is a micro-JRPG from beginning to end boss in the space of one area, with dialogue distilled down to the pure essence of vintage RPG speech.
I think it could be amusing. Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: Terry on February 19, 2009, 10:06:39 AM Heh, I've been vaguely thinking along the same lines. HERO'S mighty quest to destroy VILLAIN and rescue LOVE INTEREST or something like that :D
Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: increpare on February 19, 2009, 10:10:14 AM I'm sure there's room for plenty. Christ, it'd be good to see you get a game out, but, you know, be careful about putting mere recreations ahead of your academic studies/&c..
Condensed RPG sounds like it would work really well. (and there's plenty of room for several variations on the considerably broad theme). (there was a one-screen rpg competition over at adva.com.ar a while ago, I think). Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: shrimp on February 19, 2009, 11:51:56 AM Wow, that sounds quite awesome! I'm pretty busy that weekend, but maybe I'll just make something early (and take some days off work!) I just happen to be working on a Lo-fi RPG engine too...
Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: Moth on February 19, 2009, 01:11:42 PM I'm totally going to participate in this, it has a really interesting concept. I need to get on making a generic engine for mine...
Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: mirosurabu on February 19, 2009, 01:59:01 PM Sounds interesting. I may enter it.
Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: nihilocrat on February 19, 2009, 05:48:41 PM If I've got the time, it would be cool to participate.
Hopefully I can manage something creative-yet-feasible, with some randomly-generated content. Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: Pablo on February 22, 2009, 09:37:05 AM Sweetness.
Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: ElTipejoLoco on February 22, 2009, 10:39:52 AM A Jam on my birthday? Oh boy!
Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: professor dead on February 22, 2009, 11:02:18 AM A Jam on my birthday? Oh boy! pre-happy birrday ;D :handthumbsupR: Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: shrimp on February 22, 2009, 01:15:56 PM A Jam on my birthday? Oh boy! Hey, it's my birthday too! Cheers! Although in my case it means I probably can't really participate... I'll try and post some kind of build of my Lo-fi RPG anyway, and poke my head in the forums, just to make a token effort. Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: Terry on February 25, 2009, 03:17:10 AM Just a reminder: this is happening this friday! I can't wait to get started!
Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: Terry on February 26, 2009, 03:47:54 PM It's happening tomorrow! Run for your lives! :screamy:
Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: TheBlackMask on February 26, 2009, 11:08:06 PM Since it's technically Friday here, I am getting an early start, since Saturday is a bit busy for me. I'm definitely liking the lofi theme...it makes it so much easier to just be able to concentrate on the game.
Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: mirosurabu on February 27, 2009, 04:25:33 AM Sunday-Monday is better suited for me. If that's okay, I may enter.
Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: Terry on February 27, 2009, 04:58:29 AM That's cool, whenever suits :)
Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: ElTipejoLoco on February 27, 2009, 05:55:22 AM I might start today if school and my birthday allows. I may have relatives and friends visiting (or maybe not), and I may be inclined to play more than to create.
 It's now legal for me to pretend to be this icon. Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: Hayden Scott-Baron on February 27, 2009, 05:45:29 PM I might just give this a shot :) I'm not sure whether I can pull it off, but it's worth a go!
Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: Hayden Scott-Baron on February 28, 2009, 03:41:56 AM Damn, I can't seem to come up with anything that can be done in the time available, as I don't have any sort of framework I can use.
I'm looking forward to seeing what people do for this! Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: CyanPrime on February 28, 2009, 10:57:20 PM Arg, I would have joined this if I seen it a month ago!
I'm working on an RPG, but I doubt it'll be done in time. I'm half tempted to break out my Java and make a quick RPG in that. How much time could I get if I decided to? When is the max deadline? cause it said it's flexible. Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: ElTipejoLoco on March 01, 2009, 04:38:59 AM Arg, I would have joined this if I seen it a month ago! But if you've been working on your particular RPG for longer and have made actual game content, it probably doesn't fit with the theme at all. Terry's allowed people to work Sun-Mon on this, so I don't see why he'd tell you not to. Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: Hayden Scott-Baron on March 01, 2009, 05:21:25 AM I'm working on something with Terry! It might be awesome! XD
Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: Hempuliā½ on March 05, 2009, 04:51:47 AM So this is over now?

Yes...Here is a thread of all the entries. Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: Seth on March 05, 2009, 03:56:54 PM http://forums.rpgdx.net/viewtopic.php?t=2129 (http://forums.rpgdx.net/viewtopic.php?t=2129) Yes...Here is a thread of all the entries. Looks like some nice entries, though I was hoping there'd be more Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: Moth on March 05, 2009, 04:30:48 PM I am so late
Just started work now, I finally figured out what I wanted to do. Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: Natso on March 05, 2009, 04:43:54 PM That guy right above me just brought up this competition... and I had one of those random ideas, ya know? So, we'll lead the late entries brigade.
 Self-appointed-ly not TOO late.... edit: Retracted. Laptop is dead T_T will have to fix over spring break. Gosh darn it. Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: mirosurabu on March 10, 2009, 02:08:36 AM Very late entries are allowed? Which means I can enter competition as well?
Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: increpare on March 10, 2009, 08:31:22 AM it's not a competition, it's a jam. late entries are, to my knowledge, more welcome :)
Title: Re: LoFi RPG Jam at RPGDX Post by: mirosurabu on March 11, 2009, 06:10:59 AM Good then, I may do something. (though I always say that)
