Title: Venatio Creo - 2D Game Development Toolkit + Tech Demos Post by: Urishizu on April 26, 2009, 02:31:20 PM Hi Everyone,
(http://www.venatiocreo.com/portfolio/Evan_Wolbachs_Portfolio/Venatio_Creo_files/Media/editor1/editor1.jpg) Venatio Creo is a 2D game development toolkit that requires no written programming. Games are created by utilizing a WYSIWYG editor interface for both game and menu system creation. The focus for this project has been to develop a piece of software that anyone can use to quickly make their own interactive computer games, even if they are just a casual computer user. (http://www.venatiocreo.com/downloads/t1.jpg) Aki no Toki – RPG Tech Demo Aki no Toki is a traditional J-RPG. The game follows a traveler as he attempts to rid a village of a nearby monster den. It’s a fairly by the numbers short game, but it is my hope that it shows the versatility of the editor. Controls: Arrow Keys - Movement Spacebar - Interact Enter - Check Status Mouse - Interaction in shops and in battle Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qGUjVlkgSI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qGUjVlkgSI). Download (WinXP/Vista): http://www.venatiocreo.com/download/akinotoki.exe (http://www.venatiocreo.com/download/akinotoki.exe). It’s a fully stand-alone game, so you do not need the editor to play it. It will run on Windows XP/Vista 32-64-bit. You must accept and install the OpenAL installer package that runs after the installer to be able to play. (http://www.venatiocreo.com/downloads/t4.jpg) Tofu Hero – 2D Platformer Tech Demo Tofu Hero is a traditional 2D platformer. You must navigate your Tofu man through a maze, consisting mostly of jumping puzzles. Your Tofu can shoot fireballs to knock out incoming projectiles as he tries to make his way through the maze. This demo is just designed to show how a simple 2D platformer of multiple levels can be constructed, and features some great music. Controls: Left and Right Arrow Keys - Movement Up Arrow Key - Jump Spacebar - Shoot fireball Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4298_yXTy5I (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4298_yXTy5I). After you give Aki no Toki and Tofu Hero a try, I invite you to try the editor interface for Venatio Creo. Using Venatio Creo, you can construct 2D game worlds by manipulating the on-screen elements directly. You may import your own images and sounds, and create custom game logic through an on-screen game logic editor. There is no written programming required to learn, instead you form simple English sentences from a drop-down box. Almost any 2D genre is possible because the game logic sentences are very generalized. This allows a designer to create genres such as RPG's, platformers, puzzle games and more. You can feel free to take these and modify them, or use them as a basis for a game. As above with Aki no Toki, Venatio Creo will run on Windows XP/Vista 32-64bit and you must accept and install the OpenAL package for the program to run. So that’s basically it. Feel free to take and modify any of the tech demos to play around, or use as the basis of a new game. If you have any feedback, questions or if you decide to make a game, please let me know through this forum post. I’m always interested to see what people develop. There may be some unforeseen bugs lurking around, but I really haven’t run into anything too terrible lately, so I hope you guys will have a smooth experience. Good luck and let me know what you think! Title: Re: Venatio Creo - 2D Game Development Toolkit for Everyone Post by: Frog on April 27, 2009, 12:48:37 AM Please don't make an account to advertise. Get involved with the community a bit more before you begin to show off your stuff here. We should have let the thread die out instead of giving him exposure.People should learn the hard way that just pimping their software on here isn't the way to go. About the software posted: Not interested, from what I can read there is no control of the actual code in the maker, might help some people but I want to get my hands dirty. Title: Re: Venatio Creo - 2D Game Development Toolkit for Everyone Post by: Urishizu on April 27, 2009, 04:28:07 AM Edit: I think that I will just try to let the thread be. It's my hope someone will find this a little useful, but I do apologize if this was posted in the wrong spot. Thanks for the support Cagey.
Title: Re: Venatio Creo - 2D Game Development Toolkit for Everyone Post by: Cagey on April 27, 2009, 04:42:07 AM I kinda dislike the attitude this forum has towards manbabies posting cool things. I don't want to cause offence here, but surely if you don't like something you can just not read it. There are definitely instances where people are selling HOTDOGS, but this looks like it could be a useful tool that would benefit the TIGS community...
Title: Re: Venatio Creo - 2D Game Development Toolkit for Everyone Post by: nihilocrat on April 27, 2009, 07:35:04 PM Yeah, the immediate responses to this thread are harsh, I think they're kinda uncalled for. I would much rather characterize TIGSource as "cult" or "selective" than "elitist" and I hope our image stays that way.
The app looks pretty neat, of course I don't like any game-maker where I don't get to program, but it still looks pretty polished and inviting. I'm sure more casual people or kids would have fun noodling around with it. I have nothing against shareware, but I would prefer the authors to get acquainted a bit more before pimping their stuff. Venatio Cero looks very sweet, unfortunately it's in direct confrontation with a lot of great game makers, it's gonna be difficult. especially if you're a lone programmer. Title: Re: Venatio Creo - 2D Game Development Toolkit for Everyone Post by: Urishizu on April 28, 2009, 04:19:55 AM I totally understand how this is in direct confrontation with things such as Game Maker or Alice. The project was actually done through development parallel to HCI research, where we tried to improve upon some of the editors that forced people to learn a proprietary written language. There is a paper available on Venatio Creo here: http://www.venatiocreo.com/downloads/VenatioCreoPaper.pdf (http://www.venatiocreo.com/downloads/VenatioCreoPaper.pdf). That paper discusses some of the background of the project, as well as our testing groups and how things evolved over the development period. Honestly, for being just one programmer, an artist and some assorted help, I think it turned out pretty well.
It may not be in a position to topple those other editors (and honestly, with a full scripting language they are more powerful), but with just the sentence support we have now some great little games have been developed. Additionally, I forgot to mention another tech demo that is available. Tofu Hero, a 2D sidescrolling platformer (just a few levels) is a small game that shows a somewhat competent platformer. It was made pretty quickly, but I still think it turned out pretty neat. Tofu Hero Download (WinXP/Vista): http://www.venatiocreo.com/download/tofuhero.exe.
