Hey, this is seriously depressing :(

I don't mean to be rude, and people may have already told you, but if I had to guess why the game has so little success (despite the very good retention rate for the players you already have), it its visuals. I've watched your trailer, and I can see there must be a lot to do in your game, it seems to be very rich, lots of content, reactive gameplay, but... it's not attractive. (And the screen transitions... oh damn...)
So regarding your next steps, maybe you could consider hiring an artist.

Thanks Grhyll - sorry to induce serious depression :). I've gotten a lot of feedback on the article throughout the day today and there definitely seems to be a consensus about the main character and the visuals needing a lot of work, like you're saying. The art that's there was always somewhat temporary (I was focused on programming / gameplay / playtesting throughout most of the project so far).
