Title: Diffuse darkness or somesuch... Tips?
Post by: Cerogravian on July 22, 2009, 02:11:42 PM
...So, I was going to try making my first animation here, and I kind of got stuck with the idea of making some unfocused, wobbly, whatever... It's kind of hard to describe, but:

I know it's kind of crap, but I think the idea comes across.
Does anyone have any tips on a good (and preferably easy) way of getting a dark, weird, disturbing feel to it?
I'm going to make some more koalamonsters moving about, but this way would take ages :droop:

Anyhoo, I'm a bit too tired now, feedback is always fun, but tips are better :giggle:

It's not disturbing already?

Edit:

Well you should make the dark areas darker. It needs more contrast. And if you were going for the glowing eyes effect the fur around the eyes would catch part of the glow. Having reddish smoke coming from the sockets may add some effect too.

Pretty creepy already. I think the background that it is against will effect it's creepiness significantly. A darker one that it blends into would be good.

Movement will also sell the personality. Make it almost look like a normal koala, then twist the limbs so that they're unusually long or twist at an odd angle- sort of like that freaky walk the girl from the Ring does.

Shadow Cheshire Koala?

twitching can be disconcerting. Just sudden jerks of the head or limbs, independent of one another, like the thing is barely containing some sinister urges.

take a look at princess mononoke for awesome and nasty wormy gross writhing animation
the demons, yeah?
or a lot of ghibli stuff with bad guys, like the blobmen in howl's moving castle
blobby and wiggling and falling over themselves and climbing on top of stuff

I think it could be darker, the more you leave to the viewer's imagination, the scarier it can get. See if it works in just black sillouete with those eyes/teeth.

Make the eyes small and bright, and the other parts darker. That works often, also the other way around.

While he is rather light, my suggestion is not to dark him too much, I love the out of focus aspect... probably because it reminds me of this:
