Title: Mockup Frenzy 2: Roundworld
Post by: Inanimate on July 27, 2009, 05:12:49 PM
Welcome to the second edition of Mockup Frenzy! In Mockup Frenzy, you have 1 week to make a mockup following the theme or restrictions of the current theme. This is NOT a competition! No one wins, or loses. It is simply for fun!

Round and round, the theme wheel goes, where it will land, we already know! The theme for this week is ROUNDWORLD. In this 'Roundworld' all games have circular screens, so therefore your mockup should too! Creatively using the 'circular' theme would be nice, but it would also be interesting to see how this would affect a normal game too!

Basically, the screen is round!

The deadline is technically next Monday, or August 3rd. At this deadline, I will gather all the mockups into the main post for celebratory purposes! Of course, nothing can stop you making Roundworld mockups AFTER the deadline, the deadline is mainly just for determining when the next theme starts.  :)

Now, spin me right round, artists!

This is gonna be soooo good! I like restrictive concepts, and this is a really good one!

Do the GBA screen restrictions still apply?

If it's not noted in the start of the thread, it's not a restriction. So, no. Also, I would love a skilled pixel artist to help me out with... well, actual pixel related constraints. I can only make up themes.  :shrug2:

I have an idea ;D

I'm actually not sure how to make it though.
Gonna wait for some entries.

Thanks Inane, I thought it wouldn't be so hard to get.  ??? I must have explained it all funny.

LISTEN TO INANE, HE IS CORRECTO-MUNDO

Also, that looks fantastic, PANPOMMA!

Naww, it was pretty easy to get, it's just, y'know, I like when contests and challenges have some formatting that calls attention to the rules. :laughter:

Time for some RTS on a globe methinks!

EDIT: Updated

Johnnoz? You have stuff outside the screen... so that isn't within the restrictions. It looks great otherwise though.

ah damn, didn't think that through. I'll post a version with the UI integrated into the screen later hopefully

Fun fact: the first videogame with a graphical display (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennis_for_Two) used a round screen.

WASTE

(Green meter is the Fume level. This place with round screens also has Smellovision.)

I realize this isn't an actual mockup, but my excuse is the game would be 3D. It's probably a bad idea, but I'm working on two others at the moment and wanted to get this idea out of my head.

Anyone else end up planing almost the whole game when they make these?  :droop:

That looks amazing, unsilentwill! None of these mockups have to be pixel art either, unless the rules specify so. I feel making it any art style opens it up to more people on TIGS, since in the original place this came from, it was a pixel art forum.

Anyone thinking what I'm thinking? (if not, think harder!) I mean, a diving game?!

Sad that I can't really get this one on paper...

Squid Hunter!

With your jetpack and harpoon gun take to the skies and hunt down monstrous flying squids.

I want to mockup the diving game! Sadly, I have no talent.

Also, I'm surprised by all the creativity! Someone should really make a game with a round screen, it would be interesting.

Magesphere

You play as a wizard looking inside his magic glass sphere, it could be a sort of "god game", with the ability to possess creatures, to cast spells and such.

The whole game is seen in fisheye perspective  :D
It would be better in 3d, but as this is only a mockup... ;)

Really nice idea, again!

Little thought provoker: Do you think, if there was a world where screens really WERE round, they would be doing ideas like this, that take advantage of it? Or would they have the same kind of games as this world?

I doubt the games would be any different. Especially considering both squares and circles incorrectly simulate human vision.

Ah, I have a 3D idea, and started making it in 3D, and it was taking too long. If other people are just sketchin' the 3D then I will too.

Love the diving helmet idea. I think it would look better if the bars were black silhouettes, as they wouldn't be getting lit from inside the helmet. It'd make the sea scene pop out more.

Well, no. It has to be round. Circular was a bit badly worded, sorry. So no, it doesn't have to be a circle, but it has to be round, so the available shapes are OVAL, and CIRCLE.

EDIT: Oh frickity frack! I forgot to tell you guys this;

IMPORTANT NEWS

Mockup Frenzies are lasting TWO WEEKS. We (or rather I) messed up last week, and I am DREADFULLY SORRY.

However, voting takes place DURING a Mockup Frenzy. Voting is in the middle of a Mockup Frenzy, so you have a week for voting for the next Frenzy, instead of 3 days, which I feel is a lot better, if we ever get a lot more people, and it allows for vacations and the like.

So, voting will begin today to determine the next Frenzy, but this Frenzy is STILL GOING ON UNTIL THE MONDAY AFTER THE NEXT. I noticed a few people didn't get to finish last time, so the extension is for more people to be able to join, and get their due credit.

Sorry for the confusion.

However, if you guys think 3 days of voting, and one week of Mockup Frenzying, is fine, please tell me. I'm doing this because I think this is what you guys want.

Mockup Frenzies now last two weeks (so, this one lasts till August 10th) and Mockup Voting begins one week into the Mockup Frenzy and last a week (so, voting starts today, and ends August 8th).

Now, I'm just a simple Hyper-chicken from a backwoods asteroid, but it seems to me this contest here is endin' on not this Monday, but the Monday of the followin' week.

The creator of this here contest has gone and changed the rules in the middle, which all though is in favor of my client, deadline or rule changin' of any sort if mighty strange dependin' on whose scheduales get all switched around. I say let the creator decide on whats best, and not to leave the deadlines to the participents.

Almost. There will be about two days downtime between Mockup Frenzies (Saturday and Sunday), so it's basically back to back. Those two days are just for relaxing, voting, and any stragglers of the previous Frenzy.

I'm glad to see that people are interested in this, too. I really like doing these, and I hope we can do a lot of these! It seems you guys like them too, which is always nice.

And remember, voting IS going on, so start voting!

it doesn't actually end in two weeks.
you can still submit stuff afterwards.
