Anyways, I'd say this (http://lijik.deviantart.com/) guy's. And here's a pretty badass picture he did. (http://fc07.deviantart.com/fs44/f/2009/098/0/a/Illithid_for_Zapper_by_Lijik.png) Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: Ego_Shiner on October 08, 2009, 08:31:33 PM well i meant awesome
Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: Gainsworthy on October 08, 2009, 08:50:58 PM Ah, good, another Awesome Art thread. We used to have one, but I think it got lost. At least, I can't find it anymore.
ANYWAY, (http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/6156/theycamebywater.jpg) Shaun Tan (http://www.shauntan.net/). I'm going to go out on a limb and say he's possibly my favourite. Mostly does picture books. (http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/1290/lostthing.jpg) Do I win a prize? ALSO: Pina is fantastic! Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: ChevyRay on October 08, 2009, 08:56:36 PM I was recently inspired by the badassness of this:

Shaun Tan has most badass drawings ever! My favorite book has to be The Arrival
(Some pages from The Arrival) (http://www.shauntan.net/images/books/the-arrival7.jpg) (http://www.shauntan.net/images/books/the-arrival2.jpg) (http://www.shauntan.net/images/books/the-arrival8.jpg) I also got the pleasure of meeting Mr Tan! It was awesome! He came around to my primary school and brought some of his original pictures from the books! Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: Xion on October 08, 2009, 10:38:01 PM (http://www.jamesjean.com/work/sink.jpg)
(http://www.jamesjean.com/work/cannibal.jpg) James Jean (http://www.jamesjean.com/), one of my faves, without a doubt. Incredible sci-fi-ness. Chevy: Holy stuff, man, source? Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: ChevyRay on October 08, 2009, 10:45:43 PM @Xion: Pietepiet showed it to me, he found it here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=374094
That thread sort of links to the sources of all the different pictures. And yes, the Arrival was a masterpiece. Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: Gainsworthy on October 09, 2009, 03:40:22 AM (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3555/3592037534_49a8d6e76a.jpg) What is... this feeling? LOVE? I also got the pleasure of meeting Mr Tan! It was awesome! He came around to my primary school and brought some of his original pictures from the books! :o That must've been so cool. I remember being wowed by The Rabbits when I was 6. So grim, and yet so beautifully illustrated. I must track down all of his books I haven't yet read! Especially The Arrival. Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: MaloEspada on October 09, 2009, 12:01:50 PM I personally like Jacek Yerka's style

Or Mr. H. R. Giger? Masters in their fields, IMHO.
I'd post images but I imagine everyone here is already aware of their works. If not, go look 'em up. Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: pen on October 09, 2009, 02:56:15 PM http://goodbrush.com/
This really needs to be posted :) Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: thedaemon on October 09, 2009, 04:40:31 PM Good ole Craig. :) He was a big inspiration for me in high school.
This guy has taken a new approach to the style of Sam Keith, which was a new approach to the style of Frank Frazetta. They are my favorite artists. http://timkelly.deviantart.com/ (http://timkelly.deviantart.com/) (http://fc00.deviantart.com/fs48/f/2009/224/9/6/Explorer_by_TimKelly.jpg) Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: Xion on October 09, 2009, 06:08:27 PM http://goodbrush.com/ Ooh, yeah, he's (yet another) favorite of mine. Got a new site since last I czeched. Groovy. This really needs to be posted :) That Tim Kelly guy is rad as well, I'd never heard of him. Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: roboprez on October 09, 2009, 06:25:17 PM Wow TimKelly's Amazing! I really want to make something in that thick black line style. Unfortunately I can't draw for crackers :(. There's a friend of mine that draws in kinda the same style but with thinner lines. He dosn't have a deviantArt or anything so I might scan some in later. Speaking of things that I want to do but can't some of you might know about Orioto (http://orioto.deviantart.com/).
(http://th08.deviantart.net/fs51/300W/i/2009/270/f/6/Sea_Battlegound_by_Orioto.jpg)(http://th05.deviantart.net/fs41/300W/i/2009/046/a/b/Lava_Ballad_by_Orioto.jpg)(http://th01.deviantart.net/fs40/300W/i/2009/044/6/6/Land_Sorrow_by_Orioto.jpg)(http://th03.deviantart.net/fs46/300W/i/2009/220/5/6/Another_World_by_Orioto.jpg) His main thing is that he digitally paints scenes from video games. I just love his style and wish I could paint like that :o Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: Melly on October 09, 2009, 10:31:34 PM Awesomesauce.
A Castlevania that looks like that would be ace. Kinda like Muramasa, with vampires. Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: Pishtaco on October 10, 2009, 12:57:35 AM (http://www.sparth.com/images-selection/spacetaichi-small.jpg)
Goddammit, thanks for the Sparth link. That's exactly the inspiration I need for something. Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: JLJac on October 12, 2009, 10:15:57 AM Sparth is an old fav of mine. I had a period when everything I made looked like that :D Next time you draw a landscape you'll feel how it's itching in the fingers to draw motion blurred little flakie things in the air.
His contrast between depth and flatness is pretty damn genious. Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: Chris Z on October 12, 2009, 10:21:35 AM All my recent wallpapers have been something from Orioto's DA, I second the badass nomination.

Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: kyn on October 29, 2009, 08:16:50 AM It's a bit peculiar, Beksinski isn't generally a well known artist but seems to be pretty much the best known (and loved) artist amongst the internet crowd. Yeah, he was never good at marketing his stuff and getting his name across. I also read that one time in the 70's (or 80's ?) he purposely burnt most of his work because it was too personal or something like that, he seemed like a rather shy character. But those who excel, no matter how unpopular they were, will eventually resurface and receive recognition. As a side note, that creepy music loop (http://www.beksinski.pl/muzyka/original_works_001.mp3) in his website is so fucking cool. Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: JLJac on October 29, 2009, 10:12:55 PM Might be that the stuff has a pretty upfront fantasy/scifi character to it, and people that are not nerds tend to deem that as lesser art without really judging it on the same conditions. Sad story, that.

MOEBIUS aka Jean Giraud Looking through his comics you'll find a large part of Star Wars was inspired by his work. Like the Death Star, ships/character designs. He's extremely prolific and can do pretty much any style. I'm mostly just taking whats in a google search, but I have almost everything he's done. It will explode you to see. (http://www.dodecaden.com/Files/file/CANTO1_fg/Coskhyllote.jpg) (http://www.dodecaden.com/Files/file/CANTO1_PL/ArenasF_page011sneakpreview.jpg) Spanish artist who does a lot of different freelance projects. He's done character and background design for animated films, comics, childrens' books illustrations and tons of stuff. Total badass with a lot of art variety. Only problem is that he has three websites: Yaxin the Faun art blog: http://yacinfields.blogspot.com/ Man Arenas art blog: http://man-arenas-news.blogspot.com/ Dodecaden: His portfolio site (not as well updated): http://www.dodecaden.com/Public/ Tkotrxtiny: http://homepage3.nifty.com/tkotrxtiny/ (http://homepage3.nifty.com/tkotrxtiny/scrawl01/scr135_080622sun.jpg) Japanese artist. Reminds me a lot of Miyazaki's older stuff. I think she does book illustrations, but I honestly have no idea. I just stumbled onto her site at random and fell in love with her work. She only updates with a new image once in a blue moon, tho she's put up a few new ones in the last month or two - which is a lot for her... Koyori (I have no idea if that's actually his/her name... anyone know japanese care to enlighten me?) http://koyori.org (http://koyori.org/date/20091009001537.png) As a side note, this person keeps their art on Pixiv. I dunno if you need an account to view the stuff... I managed to fumble my way through making an account. It's well worth the effort, because there is some amazingly awesome work to be found on that site. It's like the Japanese version of Deviantart or something, but you can access a members favorites really easily and thus end up finding a lot of really good artists just by clicking around. I find it kinda fun to go through and collect bookmarks on that site. Definitely check it out - especially if you're into the whole anime thing. Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: Melly on November 09, 2009, 09:58:38 AM Pixiv is so annoying. (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/29/Piranesi9c.jpg) And yeah, there's at least one impossible shape in there. Saw his work back in 2008 while I was active in conceptart.org. As far as I know, he did work in Killzone 2 and Bioshock, amazing guy. You may have read these at one point of another. They were usually in school libraries, my elementary school had them, and i'm pretty sure my middle school had them, despite how disturbing the illustrations were. For those of you who haven't read the books, they are okay, and not that scary, except for a few. But the illustrations were what made the books so terrifying. They even caused a bit of controversy for the books.
Here's one of the less disturbing ones. (A New Horse) (http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx29/daraymanning/anewhorse.jpg?t=1306035424) Here's a some links to some of the better ones. Oh Susannah! Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: ink.inc on November 08, 2011, 08:26:23 PM Oh man I love that runaways art I'm going to have to read that. Easily one of my top three favorite comics of all time (The other two are The Sandman and Watchmen). Written by Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man, Deus Ex), it's about a group of kids who discover that their parents are psychotic mass murderers and super villains. The writing is witty, it's snappy, and the art is fantastic. You can see Alphona's improvement over the course of the first two 'seasons'. After the second season, Alphona and Vaughan leave the project, and Joss Whedon takes over. Whedon's run was good, but not great. However, don't read ANY OF THE COMICS PAST WHEDON'S RUN; THEY ARE THE WORST. JUST THE WORST. Example: Runaways Season 1 (http://www.readaboutcomics.com/images/021005_runaways02.jpg)(http://www.comicwallpapers.co.uk/images/main/Marvel%20Comics/Runaways/1024768/The-Runaways-Nico-Minoru_1039.jpg) Runaways Season 2 (http://api.ning.com/files/tztPCfBI3q68UA3e8msBpoQtvy9DQg8MBqgfRGRZ0-pI5LCC7VK*9duVKkl8oYo7nk3uM7iOaV6vcNVYFv6J5z9C1EybHz2i/23836692753nicominoru_super.jpg?width=375&height=600)(http://www.comicbookresources.com/images/previews/marvelcomics/runaways_volume2/RUNAWYV2010014.jpg) Runaways Season 3 (http://api.ning.com/files/AbkfudDTETjOSrDizwncTPVSGgJR1ZywCf73xQ2f95u80gmQm*oITFie*PWQQiwJe3X0e0qiKYVqFOa-1dpccJauWzGbtSXD/168714159042karolinadean_super.jpg?width=332&height=600)(http://imgc.allpostersimages.com/images/P-473-488-90/51/5126/ZQYEG00Z/posters/michael-ryan-runaways-27-group-mancha-victor-stein-chase-hayes-molly-minoru-nico-dean-and-karolina.jpg) Runaways Season 4 (http://i39.tinypic.com/2vw7hgw.jpg) FUCK THAT SHIT I WANT ALPHONA BACK Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: Derek on November 08, 2011, 10:07:06 PM (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HyBNbUcIajI/S98S61yu7FI/AAAAAAAAAL0/EFjRYqEBWRg/s1600/ARES+COVER-GARRES.jpg)

Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: eobet on July 26, 2012, 07:22:18 AM Despite many comic book artists having been mentioned, I'm sort of surprised this guy hasn't come up yet (Simon Bisley):
(http://i.imgur.com/ckDXK.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/gb2zF.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/P73rQ.jpg) It's quite easy to see who he got his main inspiration from, though, but he does some interesting proportion distortions at times (and a lot of filth... just Google it). Also, I love that Roger Dean was mentioned twice, but nobody brought up Rodney Matthews. But I guess they're as close as Bisley is to Frazetta, so maybe it's unnecessary. However, it's a true crime that Syd Mead has been left out so far. The original Finnish version (there's a newer, way soulless translation) was illustrated by Tove Jansson, whose style I've always liked. Some examples:

Hmm, by original translation, do you mean "Lohikäärmevuori"? I once found that and didn't really like that except illustrations. Too bad that my copy of Hobbit doesn't have Tove's illustrations even though one was released in 2000s.
Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: powly on January 19, 2013, 04:55:37 PM Lohikäärmevuori indeed. I find the way how especially the names are translated a lot more fun and imaginative and it uses some older phrases that I think give it a great vibe. I've have a few discussions about it, though, and most people seem to prefer the newer translation :)

Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: Rahrahrah on September 05, 2013, 10:18:57 AM I never looked at it, but my guess its probably as good as any licensed work he might have done. I own some of his other books, not any licensed stuff, and they are pretty great. Smutty at times, but great.
Pretty much all of his stuff is wonderful to look at. Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: Carrion on September 08, 2013, 11:33:19 PM Ashley Wood is delightful, I have Zombies VS Robots and his WWR book. I enjoy looking at his toys more than I do his paintings. I'm obsessed with the thought of a game having 3D character models on par with the aesthetic quality of his physical work.

The film was highly praised by audiences and critics for its unique style of animation and was nominated for two Academy Awards—Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for "Belleville Rendez-vous". It was also screened out of competition (hors concours) at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival.
IMHO it is one of the best animation works I have ever seen. Title: Re: Badass art styles Post by: Noogai03 on December 26, 2014, 02:50:13 PM I enjoyed "The triplets of Belleville".
