Sparth is an old fav of mine. I had a period when everything I made looked like that :D Next time you draw a landscape you'll feel how it's itching in the fingers to draw motion blurred little flakie things in the air.

His contrast between depth and flatness is pretty damn genious.

The atmosphere in those pictures is just amazing, the use of blue in shades is just marvelous. And the contrast between the foreground and the background and the whole misty dawn kind of feeling in it, lovely.

That is the best way to draw europe I've ever seen! The political symbolism goes me by though... I understand germany as a machine, but soviet as flies and maggots? Wouldn't ants be more fitting? And italy as eels?

The idea for Russia is that the bear is dead, it still looks ferocious, but its rotting from the inside out.

That map is the best thing I've seen in ages.  It's both clever and well constructed.  It is beautiful.

It's a bit peculiar, Beksinski isn't generally a well known artist but seems to be pretty much the best known (and loved) artist amongst the internet crowd.

Yeah, he was never good at marketing his stuff and getting his name across. I also read that one time in the 70's (or 80's ?) he purposely burnt most of his work because it was too personal or something like that, he seemed like a rather shy character. But those who excel, no matter how unpopular they were, will eventually resurface and receive recognition.

Might be that the stuff has a pretty upfront fantasy/scifi character to it, and people that are not nerds tend to deem that as lesser art without really judging it on the same conditions. Sad story, that.

i don't know if I can hot link any of his images but in my opinion one of the greatest character designers out there Hyung-tae Kim. his attention to detail, costume design and insane poses continue to inspire a novice like myself.

MOEBIUS aka Jean Giraud

Looking through his comics you'll find a large part of Star Wars was inspired by his work. Like the Death Star, ships/character designs.

He's extremely prolific and can do pretty much any style. I'm mostly just taking whats in a google search, but I have almost everything he's done. It will explode you to see.

As a side note, this person keeps their art on Pixiv.  I dunno if you need an account to view the stuff...  I managed to fumble my way through making an account.  It's well worth the effort, because there is some amazingly awesome work to be found on that site.  It's like the Japanese version of Deviantart or something, but you can access a members favorites really easily and thus end up finding a lot of really good artists just by clicking around.  I find it kinda fun to go through and collect bookmarks on that site.  Definitely check it out - especially if you're into the whole anime thing.

Pixiv is so annoying. I couldn't manage to make an account myself, and it seems like it's very popular among badass oriental artists.

Giovanni Battista Piranesi, the 18th Century engraver,  had a truly badass art style. Someone needs to take his "Imaginary prisons" series and turn them into a 3D dungeon crawl.

Yes , FlyingDebris (Keith Thompson) is a freakin genius when it comes to drawing SciFi stuff  :)

It's index painting. It's sorta like the midpoint between pixel art and high-res digital art, and is only really used in the demoscene, uh... scene.

Holy fuck, this is amazing.

INDEX PAINTING! Did not know it had a name. Always assumed it to be some kind of digital art with pixel aesthetics. It's occasionally used for video game attract/menu screens, yes?


Also, checked out Keith Thompson. And by checked out I mean looked at every picture in the gallery. I love artists who provide some backstory to go with the pieces.

What is also tragic is how, back in the early 20th century, the US wasn't expecting a big war, so ended up making all its infantry uniforms out of brown wrapping paper. These tended to get permanently crumpled  in battle, leading to shocking scenes such as the one above.

Haaa, you and me both. Not really sure who they are - looks like they're concept artists, friends on the same team perhaps? Both have really slick individual styles, but they complement each other really well. Regardless, whoever hired them for said concept art must be making some amazing product.

The only English information I could find (on Muscarine's portfolio, linked in the sidebarjigger) is that Eo is Muscarine's fiancee, which is kinda romantic, y'know, being able to draw lots of perverted naked women and things like robot-gauntlet fisting together.

It's just unfortunate that there are people that skilled that are just recreating photos.  Think if they actually made something creative and original, it would probably make me weep. :tearsofjoy:  Maybe part of their skill comes from recreating photos and not an actual understanding of light and forms though. :shrug2:

Stephen Gammell: He created the art for the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books. You may have read these at one point of another. They were usually in school libraries, my elementary school had them, and i'm pretty sure my middle school had them, despite how disturbing the illustrations were. For those of you who haven't read the books, they are okay, and not that scary, except for a few. But the illustrations were what made the books so terrifying. They even caused a bit of controversy for the books.

Yeah, Kinnas is great.

Easily one of my top three favorite comics of all time (The other two are The Sandman and Watchmen). Written by Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man, Deus Ex), it's about a group of kids who discover that their parents are psychotic mass murderers and super villains. The writing is witty, it's snappy, and the art is fantastic. You can see Alphona's improvement over the course of the first two 'seasons'. After the second season, Alphona and Vaughan leave the project, and Joss Whedon takes over. Whedon's run was good, but not great. However, don't read ANY OF THE COMICS PAST WHEDON'S RUN; THEY ARE THE WORST. JUST THE WORST.

It's quite easy to see who he got his main inspiration from, though, but he does some interesting proportion distortions at times (and a lot of filth... just Google it).

Yeah, Tove's illustrations of Moomins and Hobbit are awesome. Hmm, by original translation, do you mean "Lohikäärmevuori"? I once found that and didn't really like that except illustrations.  Too bad that my copy of Hobbit doesn't have Tove's illustrations even though one was released in 2000s.

Lohikäärmevuori indeed. I find the way how especially the names are translated a lot more fun and imaginative and it uses some older phrases that I think give it a great vibe. I've have a few discussions about it, though, and most people seem to prefer the newer translation :)

I really like Shmorky's comics, the style always struck me as feminine which confuses me because I think it's a guy. I've never read anything that supports the idea of gender or sexual preference having an obvious effect on art styles, but it's something I've always noticed.

I love this guy's style, been following him for a while. I particularly love his pieces that appear to be cartoony twists on the Frazettan fantasy style, like the ones above. He recently released a book too, which I've got in the mail. Super excited.

Also a big fan of Tove Jansson who was mentioned on the previous page. Found out about her through Vem ska trösta knyttet? which seems to have inspired Knytt. Tales From Moominvalley has to be one of my favourite children's books.

Is Ashley Wood's MGS art book any good? Been mulling over getting a copy since it seems impossible to find one by Shinkawa...

I never looked at it, but my guess its probably as good as any licensed work he might have done.  I own some of his other books, not any licensed stuff, and they are pretty great.  Smutty at times, but great.

Pretty much all of his stuff is wonderful to look at.

Ashley Wood is delightful, I have Zombies VS Robots and his WWR book. I enjoy looking at his toys more than I do his paintings. I'm obsessed with the thought of a game having 3D character models on par with the aesthetic quality of his physical work.

I enjoyed "The triplets of Belleville".  The film was highly praised by audiences and critics for its unique style of animation and was nominated for two Academy Awards—Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for "Belleville Rendez-vous". It was also screened out of competition (hors concours) at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival.
IMHO it is one of the best animation works I have ever seen.
