Title: feeblethemighty's chiptunes, uketunes, and more [FINAL]
Post by: feeblethemighty on October 29, 2009, 07:25:04 PM
Hiya!  I apologize, but i had to move all the samples and music that i had made for this competition.  Visit the music/sound section of my website at feeblethemighty.com for the files i had uploaded here!

Wow, I never thought ukuleles could sound so pretty. The chip-bass seems a little overpowering, though. Keep up the good work!

Nice little ditty. If, as the previous reply suggests, you decide to handle the overpowering sound underneath the uke, I might suggest finding a thinner percussion instrumentation. The bass could just be turned down slighty, if anything. Just my taste, but that's what I would do. Definitely glad to hear tune! Keep it up.

Thanks for the input!  I agree that the bass is overpowering.  I will try my best to adjust it and upload a new one later.

But for now, i made a new moody, atmospheric tune this afternoon called Precarious Precipitation (http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/ftm_precarious%20precipitation.mp3).  I plan on making some much more upbeat tunes later.  Fret not.

Man I love ukulele. The world needs more ukulele music! Especially in games.

Actually, i do have a ukulele which i like to rock out on, but right now i've been messing around with my Guitalele which is a 6-string ukulele and is much better suited to slower contemplative songs.

I'm having too much fun with this.  I should be doing other things, but i already came up with another tune.  This one's called Flint's Theme (http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/ftm_flints%20theme.mp3).  It kinda reminded me of meeting a new character in an RPG or something.

Any constructive criticism is welcome.

The intro sounds a little out of tune, but then I don't know much about instruments.  :shrug2: Sounds like a great tune to set to getting lost in a strange place.

Calm Retaliation is great  . It's like.. chip-folk. The others are cool too.

Thanks!  Yeah, i've always liked mixing electronic and acoustic music.

Wow, I never thought ukuleles could sound so pretty. The chip-bass seems a little overpowering, though. Keep up the good work!
I've reworked Calm Retaliation (http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/ftm_calm%20retaliation%20%28rev1%29.mp3) so the bass isn't so loud in the mix.

Also, i added a sound effect, Typing Dialogue (http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/ftm_sfx_typingdialogue.mp3), that sounds annoying by itself, but i found if you mute it and have it looping constantly in the background and unmute it only when dialogue is typing out in your game, it sounds pretty good.

Hey, I've been following. The revised Calm Retaliation is much cleaner. It's sort of minimalist sound, but has a great vibe to it now that stands out. Well done.

I like Precarious Precipitation. A lot. It seems like it would be the perfect title music for a 'serious' game. :P

Thanks.  I'm hoping to get a good range of different styles and sounds during this competition, serious all the way to ridiculous.

Just made another tune today: Sunny Underwater Nightmare (http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/ftm_sunny%20underwater%20nightmare.mp3).  It's purely chiptune right now, with a sleepy beat and a constant drone in the background.  I was thinking of maybe adding some ukulele arpeggios in too if it was too minimal of a song.  Check it out.

I like underwater nightmare quite a bit, it's pretty inspiring.  However, it gets under my skin just a little bit in the part where the high-pitched pinging is playing on beat with the main synth: They hit every note at the exact same time through the entire stanza. If just one or two notes were off from each other, or the high-pitched ping had a couple extra notes that weren't matched by the main synth, I think it would add quite a lot.

Basically, the high pinging feels a bit like the hero of that segment, but it's 'trapped' by the main synth. It wants to break free and be it's own melody! Does that make sense?

You, sir, have inspired me to break out my uke.

No good can come of this.

Yeah, after listening to it again, i see what you mean.  I'll see if i can tweak it.  Thanks for the advice!   :)

Another chiptune type song: Thick Cut Fries (http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/ftm_thick%20cut%20fries.mp3).  This one has SID chip beats and a rather playful melody.  I think for my next entries, i'm going to use mostly my uke to make a Runman inspired soundtrack.

Took Melly's idea on the request thread and sat down with SFXR and compiled 150 WAV files into one tasty 5MB ZIP file morsel.  It has multiple sound effects for categories such as jump, shoot, select, thump, explosion, and epic explosion.

Get it here: SFXR Sound Pack (http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/ftm_SFRX%20sound%20pack.zip).

Made a whole bunch of goofy vocal stuff that has more to do with in-game events.  Individually recorded numbers like "One", "Two", "Ten", "Thousand" so you can mash them together.

Also, there is stuff like "Game Over", "Round" (then mash with the "One" sample, for example), "Excellent", etc.

Listen to an MP3 sampler of the pack here: SAMPLER (http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/ftm_vocal_narrator_sampler.mp3)
Get the whole pack here: VOCAL NARRATOR SFX PACK (http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/ftm_sfx_vocal_narrator.zip)

Thanks!

Okay, one last update for today.

I thought it would be neat to have the narrator voice sound like low sample rate NES voice for those old-school fetishists.  So, i took the same narrator sample pack and gave it some crackly colour.  I don't have time to make a sampler right now, but you can download it here: Lo-Fi Narrator Pack (http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/ftm_sfx_vocal_narrator_lofi.zip).

Also, i made a short little uke song: Under the Overworld (http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/ftm_under%20and%20overworld.mp3)

Changed Narrator to Announcer (i couldn't think of the word yesterday  :-[) on first post and added a bunch of new samples to the Announcer pack from an idea from jjs on the request thread.  Things like "dastardly","insane","improbable", etc.  Any more Announcer stuff i do will be in separate zip files.

Working on some non-verbal character voices next.  Then i might try my hand at some ragtime-esque music, also from an idea from the request thread.

A question, should i bother to down-sample the announcer voices to make them sound lo-fi or should can that sort of thing be done at runtime?

As a side-note, I find it kind of amusing that Back In The Day, people putting together SNES carts would have been desperately trying to get the highest-quality audio for their announcers and character voices, but today people are running around downsampling their files to get the same effect... ;-)

Anyway, while it's certainly possible to do that kind of thing at runtime, it's not the kind of thing that most people will know how to do, so if you're willing to do it yourself, why not offer each sample in two versions, "modern" and "lo-fi" flavours?

Yeah, nostalgia is a powerful force.  Especially, it seems, for people on this forum who were mostly weaned on the NES, SNES, Genesis, etc.

I did already upload some "downsampled" announcer samples.  I'll put up a sampler of it soon.

Uploaded some new vocal samples today.  I'm going to go with a sort of character scheme and release some verbal and non-verbal samples for each one.

Right now i have a "Hero" character and a "Golem" character with lots of non-verbal samples.  Things like "huh?","whaa?","uhhuh" and various grunts, etc.  Check out the mp3 samplers for each pack below.  They contain all the split up WAV files from the ZIP.  Hope that makes sense.

I once again changed the layout of the first post for easy browsing as well as adding links to MP3 and WAV versions of music loops(OGGs coming soon).  The atmospheric loops section is added.  I put in a layered music section to allow you to mix and match parts of a song together.

ADDED:

LAYERED
BOUNCE BOUNCE BOUNCE - listen (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/MUSIC/Layered/Bounce%20Bounce%20Bounce/bounce%20bounce%20bounce%20sampler.wav) - drums1 (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/MUSIC/Layered/Bounce%20Bounce%20Bounce/bounce%20bounce%20bounce%20%28drums1%29.wav), drums2 (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/MUSIC/Layered/Bounce%20Bounce%20Bounce/bounce%20bounce%20bounce%20%28drums2%29.wav), bass1 (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/MUSIC/Layered/Bounce%20Bounce%20Bounce/bounce%20bounce%20bounce%20%28bass1%29.wav), bass2 (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/MUSIC/Layered/Bounce%20Bounce%20Bounce/bounce%20bounce%20bounce%20%28bass2%29.wav), melody (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/MUSIC/Layered/Bounce%20Bounce%20Bounce/bounce%20bounce%20bounce%20%28melody%29.wav) - A simple layered song.  There is no chord progression.  All samples are intended to layer on top of one another.

LOOPING ATMOSPHERIC
BELL TOWER - WAV (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/SFX/Atmospheric/WAV/ftm_ambient_creepy%20bell%20tower.wav), MP3 (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/SFX/Atmospheric/MP3/ftm_ambient_creepy%20bell%20tower.mp3), OGG (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/SFX/Atmospheric/OGG/ftm_ambient_creepy%20bell%20tower.ogg) - Distant clanging.  Creepy.

More stuff for the hungry masses!   :)

First, a new tune.  I had to try my hand at some laid back chiptune dub.  This one, entitled Mayor of Dubton (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/MUSIC/MP3/ftm_mayor%20of%20dubton.mp3), feels like it might be good music for a town setting or something.  Get different formats from the first post.

Next, some more vocal stuff.  This time, i wanted to make a voice that sounds like Pure Evil.  Check it out.

PURE EVIL
NON-VERBAL - listen (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/VOCAL/Pure%20Evil/vocal_pure%20evil_nonverbal%20sampler.mp3), download zip (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/VOCAL/Pure%20Evil/ftm_vocal_nonverbal_pureevil.zip)
VERBAL - listen (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/VOCAL/Pure%20Evil/vocal_pure%20evil_verbal%20sampler.mp3), download zip (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/VOCAL/Pure%20Evil/ftm_vocal_verbal_pureevil.zip)

One more update for today.

Another song done: GO GO GO GO GO (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/MUSIC/MP3/ftm_go%20go%20go%20go%20go.mp3).  NES squarewave rock guitar is go!  Key change is go!  Good for those tense moments.

An atmospheric sound loop: The Heavens are Suspect (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1289061/TIGSource%20Compo%20Tunes%20and%20SFX/SFX/Atmospheric/MP3/ftm_ambient_the%20heavens%20are%20suspect.mp3).  Pretty and drone-y, this loop seems good for heavenly hallowed halls.

I'm changing my first post entirely, removing the blurb i had initially posted because i feel like it is not necessary anymore and i want to cut straight to the downloads.  I hope that is not against any rules i have not heard about.  But just in case, i'm going to archive it here in this post.

Hey folks,

I feel like there needs to be more variety in the music in this competition so i thought this would be a good opportunity to do what i do best (whether that means it's good or not is up for discussion) and create some tunes using various programs and my ukulele.  Since they are for games, i will try to make them all loop properly, even the acoustic instruments.

Also, i thought i would probably come up with some sound effects since people partaking in part 2 will need as much as they can work with.

Well, didn't end up adding anything since November 9th because of a hard drive crash.  So, i hope i'm not too late and i'm finalizing this collection.  Hope some of it comes in handy for someone.

All in all, an interesting exercise.

Just to let you know I used a bunch of your stuff: One of your sounds as a death sound, a few of the "Pure Evil" voice samples for the bad guys, and "Mayor of Dubton" and "Thick Cut Fries". I liked "Mayor of Dubton" enough to consider having it as the only piece of music on the soundtrack, but there was loads of other good stuff, so I ended up just trying to pick stuff that sounded good alongside that track.
