@cow
yeah I love that map + printing it off is extra fun

@sirNiko/baconman
ahh I've been wondering about arrows I keep wanting an enemy to drop some but none has yet :/

I've beaten level 3 and am on level 4, I found it super easy after level 3 but I have to say I'm a bit disappointed in the raft, I thought it would let me sail anywhere on water but it seems to only work on that 1 dock (I assume there are more I haven't found though), lame!

The ladder in level 4 is pretty sweet, it makes no sense to me visually (The blue squares are like holes in the floor or something and your laying a ladder across them maybe?), but it's a cool idea.  I was much more pleased with it then the raft.

Also I just realized the "side scrolling" screens use the exact same engine as the top down ones it's just a clever use of a tile set!  That's so awesome!

yeah the orange knights suck, although they did help teach me how useful bombs are.  They seem way better then in the other zelda games possibly because you can't blow yourself up with them?
I've also just finished dungeon 3 and am really curious what the raft does.

Second dungeon defeated. Was there an item I was supposed to get there?

I'm also unclear what item I got there.  At first I thought it was bombs but now I realize I got them from a random blue enemy.  I might go back and look again (I did the second dungeon first so I could have easily missed something)

edit: just went back and found what I missed, bombs was not the new item Smiley

Use the map.  The game used to come with these things called 'manuals' and 'maps'.  Dragon Warrior I-IV used to come with TONS of maps/charts/etc.  For other games graph paper was your best friend and you made maps as you went.

Yeah I'm having fun filling in the map with my own notes about where helpful things are.  I remember liking this kind of thing when I was little, and it's so much more satisfying than the recent attempts like the ds zeldas and Etrian Odyssey (although they were both fun)

edit:
just beat level 3, I keep thinking I'm done for the day but then going back for more.  Exploring around filling in my map is really addicting and the dungeons are all short enough that when I find one I want to finish it.

also, fuck those fish dudes
seriously they are the worst.  When I ran into a screen with one while I was on full health I killed it with my thrown swords just to spite it.

To be fair, LoZ at least lets you continue at the entrance to the dungeon and is pretty fair, so it's not that bad. But I can't save at the entrance of a dungeon and pick up later.

Yeah it's weird that when you continue you start at the entrance but when you save and start again you start at the start.
45  Hidden / Game Club / Re: TIGS Game Club: Legend Of Zelda on: March 13, 2012, 05:38:46 PM
yeah you can tell it's the first since it says level-1 at the top left. Or at least that's what I've been going off of.

I'm making good progress on dungeon 3.  I hate the stupid knight dudes though, but at least the old guys hint makes sense this time (although it's not really a hint about the dungeon).

Some of the difficulty of this game is coming from my xbox360 controllers d-pad.  That thing is freaking annoying.

edit:
I've been playing on an emulator but with no save states, what about the lack of savestates don't you like?

As for direction I'm using the map that came with the nes game and it's helping me a lot, some people might view it as cheating I guess but since it came packaged with the game I don't...  I linked to it in the original post if you want it.

Is anyone participating who has not played or beaten the original Zelda before? That's what I want to see.

I haven't played the original zelda (well I played 1 level of it maybe) and I thought from the sound of it lots of others hadn't either but I seem to be the only one playing for the first time in this thread :/ .  Oh well!

edit:WTF is up with the level 1 hint, there are no peninsula's when your fighitng the boss.  I was all ready to be fighting in a water type area but it's a dragon that shoots fire.  How does that clue make any sense.
47  Hidden / Game Club / Re: Tig's Play's: Legend Of Zelda on: March 13, 2012, 04:04:51 PM
@sirNiko yeah it seems good if the person who picks the game switches each time maybe?  So since your the only one who's mentioned it, you should pick the next game and start a topic for it when we finish this one.  I'll leave this thread for picking the next game/person.
48  Hidden / Game Club / Re: TIGS Game Club: Legend Of Zelda on: March 13, 2012, 11:30:47 AM
I've almost beaten level 1 (my second dungeon) now.  I was pretty suprised when it switched to side scrolling style for getting the bow.

It's cool you can play the dungeons in so many different orders.

I also hadn't realized how much secret stuff there was just laying around the overworld map.  After this dungeon I'm going to go exploring more.  For fun i printed out the map that came with the game and am filling in the blank squares/check boxes by hand Smiley

Split into its own thread, because it really deserves it.

OK, thanks Dragonmaw.

Fuck it. It's not on my backlog, but I'd love to reexplore the game, since it's intrinsic to the design of my current project.

Do it  Lips Sealed

As far as zelda goes I just beat level 2 (although i haven't found level 1 yet).  At first I thought the game was impossible but a couple of things helped.
1.  If your not slashing your shield protects against projectiles
2.  Your money and dungeon progress are saved at death, just not your position so you still have to trek back to the dungeon.

Anyone know what good the shop items are? I'm starting to accumulate some money...

What is this:  In this thread we all play a game for 2 weeks and discuss it in this thread, at the end of the 2 weeks we pick a new game and start all over again.

For Chatting go to:
#TGN at esper.net

Current Title: Legend of Zelda
Time Frame: until april 1

You can get the legend of zelda...
http://www.zeldaclassic.com/ for mac or pc
or emulated here...
http://nestopia.sourceforge.net/ for mac or pc
or on the wii virtual console
or even for gba here...

The instruction manual is kinda helpful (with maps to get to dungeon 1 and 2) and can be found here: http://zs.ffshrine.org/legend-of-zelda/english-instruction-manual-scans.php

Also this is the original map that came with the game:

51  Hidden / Game Club / Re: Group Anti-Backlog Game Playing on: March 12, 2012, 10:25:26 PM
yeah sounds like LoZ has a lot of support.  Plus we can all get a hold of it and it isn't to long to play through.  Plus the community aspect will be fun. So...

Let's do this!

Should I (or someone else I don't care if someone else does it) make a new "official" thread for this or should we just use this one and I'll change the title?  Ashkin's chat sounds like it would be fun to.  How long should we give ourselves to play this?  Somewhere in the time range of a week or two to a month seems good depending on how often people play.
52  Hidden / Game Club / Re: Group Anti-Backlog Game Playing on: March 12, 2012, 10:53:13 AM
OK, so I don't know how to turn this into a poll (if someone else can or someone can tell me how to that'd be great Smiley ) so I'll just list some of the options I've heard and people can vote on which one they'd like to play first...

The options seem to be...

Baldurs Gate 2 -  people seem interested but the game is really long...

Deus Ex -  a good length, but lots of people have played it already so may be a better choice for a later game

time and place (mario rom hack) - super easy to get, can be played by everyone, no one seems to have played it, good length, only negative would be I don't know if people are interested in it

monkey island - classic game with a good length

mother 3 - lots of people had it on their lists in the backlog thread, short for an rpg but still on the long side

Or I can just pick one if you guys want.

Regarding this, maybe change it from "play until you beat" and more "play for a week, discuss your thoughts"?

Yeah I think this is a good idea, I might make it 2 weeks though since I know I have (and I assume other people do) trouble making serious progress in a game in one week.  Or if we pick a short game (like time and place) we could just make it one week.  Also limiting the time means if a game comes up that your not wild about it won't be to long until the next one starts.
53  Developer / Technical / Re: Any Cocos2d-x dev in the room? on: March 11, 2012, 09:28:45 PM
I also just started using it, I haven't had much trouble yet though.  It's so close to just plain cocos2d I use tutorials for both cocos2d and cocos2d-x.  So far I've got...

particle's
transitions
sprite displaying/rotating/scaling/etc.

worked out which is pretty much all I need I think.  I'm sure I'll run into some problems though so it'd be nice to know someone else working on it.
54  Developer / Business / Re: Make a Flash, sponsored version of my paid iOS game? on: March 11, 2012, 04:08:03 PM
you don't want a non-exclusive license online. You can get a primary or exclusive license and still sell the game on iphone/android.  The contracts only give them rights to web distribution which your iphone/android game will not be.
55  Hidden / Game Club / Re: Group Anti-Backlog Game Playing on: March 11, 2012, 03:48:36 PM
yeah I'd like to play a bunch of these but I think it'd work better at first if it wasn't a really long rpg.

It sounds like people are down so I'll wait for some more suggestions from people and then put up a poll with the top choices and we can all pick the first game to play.  Some things to consider...

Shorter is probably better.  More people will have time for a 20 hour game then a 60 hour one.

Multiple platforms or emulatable is good so that people can play it even if they don't have a specific console.  Since most of the games people are mentioning aren't current generation this probably isn't that big a deal since worst comes to worst you can emulate it.  Also, if it's not new it won't be super expensive to buy.

Glad to see some people would be interested

What is this:  In this thread we all play a game for 2 weeks and discuss it in this thread, at the end of the 2 weeks we pick a new game and start all over again.

Current Titles:

Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines - May 1st
Hydorah - May 15th

---

So looking at the backlog of shame thread it seem like a lot of us have similar games we're all trying to play in the near future. For me one of the reasons it's fun playing a game when it first comes out is there is usually a thread for it on here and I can talk/read about how other people are doing in the game, commiserate, etc.  So if we can get a game that enough people want I think it might be fun to all play through it together at roughly the same time and have a thread for it similar to how racketboy does together retro.  Would anyone else be interested in something like this?

I'm also in favor of option 1 (although not because option 2 sounds unfun I'd just rather you put efforts into the unique aspect of the game rather then into something that most games have) as long as you can make each playthrough different enough.

I'm in the same boat as you two with FFVI I got halfway through and lost the save, what is it about this game and losing saves

same with mother 3 only I think I can find that save backed up somewhere hopefully

My current backlog of games (ie games I plan on playing and finishing but haven't)
halflife 2 (currently almost done with)
portal 1
mother 3
pikiman
shadow of the collosus
defender's quest
the shinier version of desktop dungeons

There are a ton of other games I want to play but aren't as fresh in my mind/on my hard drive.

Oh and as far as sponsors caring about it being an iphone game in my experience most sponsors don't care (even if you put links to the iphone version in game) because the markets are so different (people aren't leaving their website to go play the game on their iphone, they just might play it on their iphone later)
