My dormmate and I started up Donkey Kong Country Returns. Both of us were surprised by how tough it is right off the bat- he in particular was pretty pissed his character could only take two hits before dying- but the levels are gorgeous and fun to romp through. We already beat the first world, so I'm hoping to see what the rest of the game has in store.

I watched You Are Umasou last night. I was not expecting to be as moved in the beginning as I was, but the film surprised me. Of course I dawwed over the adorable dionsaurs, but I was also a little stunned to see the carnivores actually eating another dinosaur- I guess I'm used to American cartoons that would just politely conceal any dead animal parts, but I guess because of the simplistic style of the film they can get away with an exposed rib cage. I also thought that the fight scenes, while ridiculous, somehow worked in the context of the film- the film was already distanced enough from reality that I had no trouble accepting the fact that dinosaurs could learn kung fu. All in all, great kids' movie, and you can watch the whole thing in subtitles on Youtube for free.

I'm having to forego illustrations in favor of text-only blogs, so that I may have a hope of finishing this thing on time. To those of you who've made it this far, congratulations! And to those of you who had to drop out, for whatever reason, many thanks to you for trying it out at all.

On the topic of rapid emotional attachment, I cried for the characters in Up in the first ten minutes, and fell in love with Wall-E within the same amount of time. It all depends on how much personality you put into them. Alyx Vance might be a good reference for how many players found her likeable.

Actually, I'd like to see more games about bromance. Perhaps an Army of Two sequel that intentionally used brofisting mercenaries for satirical purposes.

Finding awesome old games for super cheap at Half-Price Books. Got Syberia, Septerra Core, Republic Commando, and Fallout 1 and 2, all for under 5 bucks each- the Fallout games were 2 bucks! I don't know how I'm gonna get all of them to work, but I'm just happy I found them.
Also, I met a girl in one of my classes earlier this week and she gave me her number without me even asking. Not sure if that's a sign of anything, but at the very least I now know an awesome nerdy chick who makes hella sweet cosplay outfits.

I didn't know D&D editions were such a big fuss. I played a lot of AD&D as a kid and a bit of D&D 3e when it came out but that's about it. I probably will not play 5e either, I'm having way too much fun with games that have less rules, less combat and more roleplaying.
I rarely hear about RPGs written in English that are not very rule intensive, do they exist ? In my country (France) most games consist of one single book which spends at least as many pages describing the game world as the game rules. And most start with "feel free to ignore/skip rules" disclaimers.
The editions of D&D do play a bit differently, at least to us American gamers. D&D grew out of the rules-heavy wargames, so that's part of the reason that the gamebooks are so elaborate. AS far as English rules-light games, I ran and completed an awesome campaign for Lady Blackbird. It's system is dead simple to learn, and heavily encourages roleplaying which makes the game way more fun. My group's actually going to be using a modified version of the system for a Legend of Zelda-themed RPG this semester, and there also hacks for the LB system for secret agents and even Jedi Knights.

Panzer Dragoon Saga... but even the ROM for that game is notoriously difficult to find, it seems. I kept hearing about how it's one of the most interesting RPGs ever made, and the combat system alone intrigues me, but... that damn ROM.
