9  Developer / Art / Re: Emotional Games (image heavy!) on: November 15, 2008, 03:57:04 PM
thats on the boat in FFXI, the online one.
its a corsair mithra taking on a 'sea monk' or possibly a 'sea horror' (the tougher version of the sea monk.)
people mainly use the boat to get to and from selbina, a small desert town in the desert were people usually form their first parties and level up from about level 10
to about level 18.
I've been in mild peril numerous times on that boat, only to be saved by strangers taking a break from their fishing to help a guy out.
I dont play anymore, but that game still holds lots of great memories.

beautiful thread, I agree with lots of what was posted previously. keep it up guys, maybe this could be some kind of 'influential' thread for people with artistsblock.
anyway, here's my 2pence:

these games may not be beautiful/emotional to you, but they are to me. Tears of Joy

ehh heee hee one of them robots got nipple arms! you know the one I mean..
the one on the bottom left muchly reminds me of
daisy kutter
, if you havent heard of it, its a steampunk-western comic by kazu kibuishi, the guy who compiles 'flight' comic anthologies. check it out.
needless to say, your robots are smashing Gentleman

the video is a tease, I want more!
superb music too
13  Developer / Playtesting / Re: jelly wip on: November 01, 2008, 03:25:09 AM
thanks for teh feedback.
If the game runs slow, close some other programs down, such as firefox. Same thing happens for me when I play gang garrison 2, it's hellaslow until I close a few things.
the jellyfish is supposed to move randomly a bit. You and the little enemies are affected slightly by the speckley background, I tried o make it so the darker/ more overlapped the speckle layers are the more things are affected.
So do you think I should change/remove this feature, or mention it in the about section?
As for the ink, I agree, it could be much more effective, I'm thinking much bigger, yet a bit more of a 'loading' time.
there is a boss. But hes quite a small one. I was planning on more bosses, especially screen filling ones, but I'm not very good at pixel drawing when it comes to large things.
is there a way to see when you can squirt ink again...?
Oh dear! there should be. I haven't tested the game on anyone elses computer, so on your monitor it must be cutting the bottom (and maybe top) bit of the screen. umm, anyone know a good way to fix this?
as for my website, its badly needs updating! been on my list of things to do for a while now, ill hae to make it a weekend job or something.
thanks again for the comments.

this is a shooting game I've been working on to learn game maker.
I'm not sure if I want to continue making it, gimme some feedback please.

keys:
1-4 = music options
z = shoot
x = ink
arrow keys = move
end = restart
esc = esc

screens (at 50%):
play + (hopefully) enjoy!
15  Developer / Art / Re: Preferred art styles and why? on: October 30, 2008, 03:44:47 PM
generally, I'm not fond of realistic graphics/style. However I also believe that a game doesnt have to be ideally artistic/styalized to be a good game.. it just helps (and then some).

I like things which are highly stylized, which have their own unique style, something different from the norm.
I like the games art to have consistency. a colour palate to match the games mood.
I like it when you can think of a game, and recall the style as one of your favorite things.(REZ, warning forever,etc)
Although having said this, if the games style isnt all that appealing to you, it could put you off a decent game (TWEWY).

Just pondering, realistic games usually involve sports, war, driving. It would be interesting to see some (or more) highly stylized abstract artistic sports, war, driving games and on that note, it might also be nice to see some realistic yet abstract concepts in games. Not entirely sure what I mean here, but I'm thinking ultra realistic versions of harvest moon / pokemon / super monkey ball.... Evil
16  Developer / Art / Re: tigsource draws robots on: October 30, 2008, 03:10:03 PM
I love this. Very 1950's stylized.
thanks. history repeats itself so perhaps in the future when robots are around they will go back to 50's design.

what version of iron man did you you listen to Hajo? Huh?

I have sort of a design fetish for characters with monitors for faces. Canti, the Mondo characters, etc.
not to mention 'retro' from dead leaves of course Beer!

KirbyPopStars robot reminds me of the Jetsons, but more futuristic.
17  Developer / Art / Re: Platformer Paintings on: October 29, 2008, 02:04:53 PM
reminds me a bit of 'FriendsWithYou,' a little bit of Genevieve Gauckler, and a dash of Jim Woodring because of the large yellow chap.
I like them, they all have kinda animated quality to them.
one of the most interesting things for me are the shapes of the canvas, really good use of colour too. you could totally draw these in illustrator, pop them into flash and have them walk around/interact with one another!  Well, hello there!
this one thing I'd change is maybe restrict the colour palate a bit more.
good job! Beer!
