Magicka is good fun, with up to 4-player co-op. But you will accidentally kill each other a lot. That's part of the fun. It also happens to be included in the current Humble Bundle which means you can pick it up for cheap, along with several other games.

Cowboyana is only two players, but it's great. If we're including hotseat games, something from the Worms series is fun, although probably easier to control with a keyboard than a gamepad.
EDIT: Forgot they needed to be free, so forget the Worms suggestion. Cowboyana is indeed free, however.

Yes! That's the one! Thank you so much!
Glad I could help! I really enjoyed the game despite its shortcomings. Edit: it works! I could find it on abandonwares, but the 3D part are like instant fast... I need to look into how to set up these dosboxes things. But that's the one for sure, still feels great, memories and stuff... thanks again!
I didn't have any speed issues when I ran it using DOSBox, but I was probably using an older version since it was several years ago (v0.72 maybe? It's on v0.74 now). You could try an older version, or reducing the cycles, but reducing cycles is annoying because it will slow down everything in the game. Hopefully there's a way to fix it without using cycles.

A game I played and liked, but cannot remember its title. It was a RPG on top view in the late 80 or 90s, very nice pixel art, quite lenghty, mature topics and great dialogues (at least in my memory). It was sci-fi/fantasy, your crew crashes on a magic/medieval planet, you start with few futuristic weapons but don't find any other until late in game. I remember that some parts were in wolfeinstein-3D-style until you find a house you can visit, then it goes back to ultima-style top view.
It was overall quite difficult, I didn't finish it at the time, would love to get back to it now.
The game you are looking for is Albion. Sadly there's nowhere to buy it right now and used copies are extremely expensive, but it is hosted on some abandonware sites. You will have to make your own judgment about that. I played it a few years ago, and found the story and world very intriguing but the gameplay eventually got repetitive and tiresome. I did stick it out to see what happens, though, and I'm glad I did. It's definitely worth playing through to see what the developers did story-wise.

hey, guys, i can't remember the name of the game (I believe it is late 90's or early 00's) it is a racing game where you drive cosmic-style cars with some crazy shapes and unearthly layout, the tracks seem like you're driving on another planets locations... actually on the whole that's all I remember... and also i'd be glad to find where to download this game from for free This could be a lot of things. The Wipeout and Megarace series come to mind, as well as POD, Hi-Octane and Rollcage. Do you remember what system you played it on?

Nope, there wasn't alieny landscapes, just futuristic planes in mountains (mainly brown, boring ones, though I remember some rivers and trees too, but mainly mountains). But maybe I wasn't that far in the game, though crosshair was different, that much I remember. Maybe some mod? Dunno, got this on game magazine which I forgot name of and now I don't remember it.
Starfighter 3000 maybe? Although that one had destructable terrain as one of the main features. Screenshots: http://www.mobygames.com/game/starfighter-3000/screenshots

I dunno, maybe it is one of The Elder Scrolls games? First (TES Arena) was released in DOS era so with date you provided I think that may be it.
No playable dwarves in the Elder Scrolls games though. Anyway I'm looking for 6DOF game I forgot name of. You flied in some futuristic plane, mainly in mountains. It wasn't descent for sure, I've played it in 1997-2005 period but might be released earlier (I think it was dos game using DOS4gw). Please some screenshots so I can say if it is it - I have vivid memory of this game so probably would recognize it on screenshots.
Could it be Terminal Velocity? Screenshots: http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/terminal-velocity/screenshots

Great suggestions so far, I can second nominations for Powder and DoomRL. I also love Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, but while it has an easier interface than many roguelikes it is quite tough and pretty complex, so might not be what you're looking for. Worth checking out though.
Finally, let me suggest Red Rogue, which is a platforming roguelike. It's very cool.

I'm playing Snapshot right now and liking it a lot, although it's definitely a mouse-and-keyboard game, since you have to aim the camera with the mouse. Great suggestions here so far. I've actually been playing through a bunch of indie platformers and writing about them on my personal blog, so you might be interested to read those posts. Is it bad etiquette to link to my personal blog here? I hope not, but please let me know if it is. Link: http://waltorious.wordpress.com/

Legend of Princess does indeed play differently from most Zelda games. But let us not lose sight of the fact that it's awesome.
Also I forgot to second the recommendations for Guardian of Paradise, which is also excellent and DOES play like a Zelda game.

Legend of Princess was the first one that came to mind for me as well. It's awesome. I can also second all of the Ark 22 recommendations.

I quite liked The Cleaner. A bit of a slow start, but stick with it and it gets a lot more interesting. I also second the nominations for Matt Thorson's games (An Untitled Story, Jumper, Moneyseize). Other games of his that I enjoyed include FlaiL and both Give Up Robot games.

Wow, this thread got heated quickly. I would just like to say that, as a player, I always appreciate having more customization options available to me. Sound volume, graphics options (for example I really dislike depth of field effects and turn them off whenever possible), and especially control options. I realize that some customization options are a lot of work to implement (like multiple difficulty levels, for example) and I can understand why for some games these things can be viewed as design choices and the designers do not feel it's worth the effort to provide other options. At the end of the day, the designer can always decide what to include in the game, and I respect that. But I think that simple things like volume controls and the ability to remap buttons or keys are always nice to have, and difficult to defend from a design standpoint (with perhaps rare exceptions, like QWOP, where awkward controls are part of the design).
I'm currently playing Dishonored, and I was annoyed that there were objective markers and pop-up hints and the like turned on by default, which I felt detracted from my experience of exploring and figuring out routes on my own. But I was able to turn them off and enjoy the game the way I wanted to. Other players might prefer to have objective markers, and maybe they'll end up enjoying it just as much, in their own way. I'm tempted to claim that Dishonored was designed to be played without these aids, and that's certainly the way I enjoy playing it, but why prevent others from using the aids if they want them?
There were many recent games that suggested specific ways to play to enhance the experience, but still offered alternatives. Super Meat Boy (on PC) strongly recommended a gamepad to me, but I still ended up preferring to play with a keyboard, and it let me do that. Amnesia recommends turning off all the lights and wearing headphones, but it doesn't stop players from playing in a brightly-lit room on some tinny speakers if that's what they want to do. I think it's possible to have a distinct design vision without being too constricting to the player.
To be clear, I do not feel that all games must always provide these options. It's not something designers somehow owe their players; designers can make whatever they want, and in certain cases a purity of design can be more valuable than a customizable player experience. But letting players tailor the game to their specific preferences is almost always appreciated, especially when it doesn't require too much extra work on the design end.

I find it absurd enough for many games to have volume control for each music and sfx.
I don't. I have to turn the music volume down in nearly every game I play because it drowns out sound effects and characters' voices. I would be quite unhappy with a game that did not allow me to do this. I haven't had the need for master volume, though, but that's because I don't use any other programs when I'm playing. I can see why it would be useful for someone who multitasks.
