1  Developer / Playtesting / Dim Sum Robot #1 - mecha food cart action! on: January 16, 2013, 03:25:25 PM
Howdy y'all!  I'm Edward Dixon, a solo dev working on a game called Dim Sum Robot #1.  I've been making some really good progress and wanted to share it with you.

In Dim Sum Robot #1 you are the pilot of a robotic food cart.  The city is full of eager customers, and your goal is to feed as many of them as possible every day.  Other food carts also populate the city, however -- if you cut into their business, they'll challenge you to a mecha duel to claim supremacy!  You need to score big combos and upgrade your cart to become the #1 food cart in the world.

This game has a long (5 year!) history - I actually posted about it right on this forum in 2008 when I started development.  Unfortunately, those screens/videos are gone now, but after a long personal game dev hiatus I finally have time to give Dim Sum Robot #1 a proper release.

The game is scheduled to come out February 2013 for PC, Mac, iOS, and Android.  If you have any questions or comments, feel free to post! I want Dim Sum Robot #1 to be a great game, so your opinions are very important to me! Thank you!

I'm still trying to figure out how to resize the sprites in Photoshop without getting anti-aliasing. Anyone have a solution?

Dunno if you figured this out, you could try Save for Web, then click the Image Size tab at the bottom right and choose Quality: Nearest Neighbor before applying.  I don't know how good it would look, though; I usually only do this to scale up.  There's probably a better way!

Game sounds really interesting, the art's a lot of fun.  I really like the Doctor concept, but I miss the striped pants!

This looks lowpolyriffic.  Sounds like fun, I can't wait to try it out!

NYC in September would be awesome, I'd almost definitely be able to come.

It seems like there should be a lot more indie dev stuff happening in New York.  I know messhof did a few things last year, and there's places like Video Games New York, but other than that it seems pretty slow.  Or am I just not looking in the right places?  I'd love to start participating/help out to get something started.

Oh, even better then.  Only thought that because of the comment on the video Tongue
6  Developer / Design / Re: First-Person Musicals - Let's Brainstorm on: May 20, 2009, 08:27:10 AM
Dunno if you played

, but it sounds a lot like what you're talking about, I'd definitely consider it a playable musical.  And it was a lot of fun!

Music GunGun! is a new light gun music game hybrid, but I haven't gotten to play it yet.  From the videos I've seen, though, it looks like it's more of a music game than a shooter.  Still looks pretty interesting, just pretty linear.  But I guess light gun games and music games are always pretty linear Shrug

Here's an article about it with a video.

I never played Halo but this looks really fun!  Reminds me of this game, but looks much faster.  I love the art, as always.

davidp, looking good!  Really cool lighting and debris in that second screen, I recognize it from the video!  That's such a good feeling when you're about to finish something.  I'll be watching for it Smiley

Oh no! Sad

This is really cool!

Did you ever beat the boss??

Lookinnn good Masna.  I've been thinking a lot about RPG themes lately.  Love to see a mockup.

On an unrelated note,
ever since i been ridin / on that subway train . . .

I used to work with a very skilled designer who introduced me to Helvetica Neue.  He would tell me stories about when Photoshop first came out and how excited everyone was.  He used Impact a bunch, and he always made it look really good!  So since then I've been an Impact fan.  Go figure.
11  Player / General / Re: Rock Band 2 on: January 14, 2009, 08:39:32 PM
Since you like Weezer and Dead Kennedys, Ramones!  I've only played this game twice, but I really only wanted to play Blitzkrieg Bop over and over again (I think it was the first game).  I'm pretty sure Rockaway Beach is on the store thing; you should definitely buy it, if only because the first line is "Chewin' out a rhythm on my bubble gum."  And anything else Ramones!  They were the best band Kiss

Ishi, that's looking really good!  How many people are on your team?

I've been fighting with music all day trying to make something that sounds not awful.  I wanted some happy background noise in Dim Sum Robot #1 (

if you don't know what I'm talking about).

I think it's the first song I've ever finished; I'd love some feedback.  It's a bit repetitive, but that doesn't seem as noticible in the game (at least to me Shrug).

And here's a little food cart I made.  These guys were going to be competition to fight, but I decided that shooting stuff broke the feeling of the game.  Oh well!

Hey, thanks everyone!  Glad you're looking forward to playing.  I hope it turns out to be fun; it's definitely my most polished game to date Embarrassed

Me, I finished another level and I'm trying to move my game into FlashDevelop.
I didn't even realize Star Guard was in Flash!  I just moved into FlashDevelop last week, it's really great.  If you have any questions, let me know and I'll try to help!

*Are you going to create a standalone version of your games, or are you just going to try to get them hosted somewhere? (Don't know much about making flash games, so if this is a stupid question, ignore it.)
I'm not terribly experienced with Flash game distribution, but for Dim Sum Robot #1 I'm just going to host it somewhere or have portals host it.  I know there are some Flash games that provide executables (N, a few others I can't think of right now), but for me the best thing about Flash is that there aren't any files to download and unzip.  I guess that's the only reason I use Flash instead of a 'real' language like C++ Tongue
I'd love to do a DS port of Dim Sum Robot though...
14  Developer / Design / Re: So what are you working on? on: January 06, 2009, 05:11:56 PM
Ishi, that's really cool.  Are the trees going to be textured?  They look good purple like that!

I've been doing Dim Sum Robot #1 score system and interface all day.  I listened to the entire White Stripes discography twice, and a bunch of Ramones and Jeffrey Lewis too Tongue

Now I need to do menus, a few little extra things, and sound.  I'm going to hopefully have it finished by this time next week, then try to get it sponsored Roll Eyes
15  Developer / Design / Re: So what are you working on? on: January 04, 2009, 07:25:01 AM
Sparky: Star Guard keeps looking better!  I love how parts of the level are labeled 'fun'.  Looks like it's shaping up to be a fantastic game; keep it up!

JasonPickering: That flowers growing animation is so satisfying.  I see what you mean, I was trying to grow all the flowers as well.  I think that'd be a much cooler goal than just a straight-up platformer.

The movement felt really good to me, especially with the double jump.  I was never very close to running out of water, but that's probably just because the level was so small.  The hitbox for the water drop felt a bit too big for me, though.  Stuff kept growing when I was barely on top of the tile.

Can't wait to see what you do with the finished version, you have a really interesting premise.

jwaap: I'm not sure what's going on but I want to play it!
16  Developer / Art / Re: show us some of your pixel work on: January 04, 2009, 07:01:15 AM

I guess I'm working on it now because this is what I want it to look like.

This looks awesome.

Yeah, this game is looking fantastic!  This picture looks like a less arcadey Gauntlet to me.  I want to play!
17  Developer / Design / Re: So what are you working on? on: January 02, 2009, 11:26:11 AM
nanotie: it's a fighter with a bunch of wacky characters, I'm trying to make it Japanese as possible.
I love this idea!

Jrsquee, that picture reminds me of escalators for some reason.  It's really cool!

I've been working on Dim Sum Robot #1.  I made another little video:

The player's serving those people, but it's hard to tell without sound  Roll Eyes

The gameplay's going to be based around lining up big groups of people.  They give tips based on how far they had to walk/wait for their food.  They like it when stuff gets blown up, too Smiley
18  Developer / Design / Re: So what are you working on? on: December 22, 2008, 08:59:10 AM
Wow, lots of cool stuff!

jollymin, KniteBlargh, dock, Sparky, thanks a lot!

Every time you post this game I want it more!  Please finish it!

michael, your colors in that mockup are beautiful.  Is that a racing game with pits to jump and enemies to fight?  I've always wanted to fight the monsters in Mario Kart.
19  Developer / Design / Re: So what are you working on? on: December 20, 2008, 11:16:00 AM

It's a game called Dim Sum Robot #1.  I just finished map scrolling and made the people move.  You sell dim sum out of a food stand that turns into a robot, but you don't have a permit so you have to avoid the cops.  Or serve them really good dim sum.  And you fight competing food stands with a big machine gun.  It's a simulation game.
20  Developer / Art / Re: Need Advice for Art Portfolio (Pictures Inside) on: December 20, 2008, 10:48:51 AM
I know that Producer Feeds tower!  I used to live there during high school!

My favorites are the video game newspaper monster, the blue city drawing, and subway Vishnu.  They're really alive and stylish!  I like the girl drawing and the photo of those big white things too, but I don't think they stand out as much.  It might just be me, though.  I like cartoony stuff 100 times better than realistic pictures.

I don't know anything at all about art school, I just think that Vishnu picture's cool.  Good luck with everything!
