I was really set on collecting all the gems, but level 6 overheated my laptop so much that everything became unplayable Sad
What I played was really cool, though.

A bit more detail about the bug:
The text screens were stored in a single large texture in the video card memory. Apparently that texture was above the maximum size on some cards, so I split it into several smaller ones.
KniteBlargh: Please tell me if your problem with funky colors has been fixed! I'm seriously hoping it's a side effect of the other bug because I have no idea what could cause it...

Increpare: Yes, I had something kind of like your idea that I didn't get time to put in (If I continue to work on this I will definitely add it):
While running the jumping would work as it does now. While standing still holding the jump button would make you charge your jump, a bit like crouching did in mario 2 (but faster and more gradual). If you hold a direction while charging the jump then you'd jump directly in that direction. What do you think? (Melly - Skidding was also on my todo list  Wink)
Another thing I was planning on was climbing on ladders: this would have reduced the necessity of boring vertical zig-zag jumping sessions I think, and allowed me to put more emphasis on horizontal jumps.

cactus: Thanks! I forgot to mention your games, but they were definitely a source of awesome inspiration for me!

NaYoN: This is all hand-coded in C++/Opengl with GLFW I'm afraid. I have no experience with GM or MMF2, but I used to make games on one of the first versions of "The Games Factory". You could get around the scene size limitations by having the "scene" be only as large as the screen, and the scenery actually be active objects moving across it when the camera would, being created and destroyed at the edges according to a "map" you predefine. Does that make sense in GM/MMF2?

I'm back, and I just uploaded a version which should have fixed the white screen problem people were having. I also tweaked the jumping puzzle that was a bit too frustrating.

Download: http://jax.sus.mcgill.ca/~jdespl/linkto/Eldritch.zip

Please tell me if you encounter any more bugs!

Haha! yeah I kind of really went overboard with the dust...

I just uploaded the last version:

I added a little storyline featuring unfathomable writing from the abyss. Tongue
Also there's a couple of other entries from the book in there, see if you can recognize them!

Sparky: I actually never played those games even though I always meant to, but I've been struck by the screenshots I've seen and there's definitely a little bit of that in this project...
Other non-obvious influences include: Prince of persia, Jean Giraud/Moebius, the Homer Simpson hot chili trip, and of course H.P. Lovecraft.

I'm not fully satisfied with this version. Hopefully I'll revisit this project some day, I have a lot more planned!

I knew the jumping physics would be somewhat controversial... I decided early on to no acceleration in the air, and the slow acceleration on the ground is kind of a necessary consequence since it allows for better control of your velocity before you jump: If you accelerate faster it can get really frustrating to try to land in the right place.
I spent a lot of time tweaking the controls to make them feel right, but I'm wondering if maybe it was my brain that adapted rather than the controls that got better...
And to tell the truth I had a few more control mechanics planned that would have made jumps more forgiving, but they got scrapped early on because of the lack of time. (things like grabbing onto ledges)

I still don't have time to try out all the other games now since I have to leave for the weekend...  Cry

Thanks for the comments!

agj: I have something like that in mind... Hopefully I'll get it done!

(new parallax layers...)

I found out about the extension until tomorrow, but since I promised I'd put something up today, here's a download of a test level:
(Link removed because of new version)
Controls: A to jump, Z to walk

I need you guys to test it and tell me what you think! (I haven't tested it on another computer yet...)

By the way, I made the map data file readable as an image file:

 Gentleman

Ok! So here's what I'm working on... I started pretty late on this because I was trying to get my IGF entry done before the deadline... (which I missed by a lot!)

I've coded the whole engine from scratch C++/OpenGL from for this competition.
These screenshots are in-game. I have the game engine and editor done, as well as some tiles, and the main character is fully animated, but I don't have a game yet Sad

It'll probably end up being a simple exploration game... But I might turn it into something more after the compo....

No download yet! But I'll put whatever I have tomorrow, I promise, even if it's just a half-assed test level...

So... Would choosing an idea that someone else is already doing a game about be frowned upon?
I've been going through the list of ideas, and every time I find one that inspires me, I go check the forums only to find out that somebody else already called dibs on it  Sad

Hopefully this time I'll be able to get something done on time...
89  Community / Procedural Generation / Re: Procedural Generation Competition on: May 05, 2008, 02:42:20 PM
I'm thinking of joining this competition but I still have a few questions:

- A lot of strategy games (think civilization) take place in a different procedurally generated world each time... Would such a game be a valid entry? I'm guessing probably not since the procedural map is really something you expect from the genre and not really making a point of being procedural for the sake of it (whereas a rpg in a procedural world would be more original?)

- What about a game that starts in the same way each time (some kind of blank slate) but where the world can change in "procedural" ways in response to the player's actions... Something like where all the content would "emerge" from the gameplay? This probably doesn't count either since it could include most simulations and building games.

- I know that the emphasis is on "new content every time the player starts the game"... But what If I want something like Elite or Noctis where a huge universe is generated procedurally but from the same seed each time, so that it is the same for everyone and players can then collaborate to map the world and relate their experiences? I'm thinking maybe the ability to generate the world with a different seed could be an unlockable or something?

- Am I taking this way too seriously given that I'll probably never get anything finished in time?
