programmer`s art :D Remember, Doom 3 got far using that technique. It looks good though, when it comes to designing machines programmers might actually be playing in the same league as artists lol. With your insight, I can finally appreciate the steaming pile of vomit that was Doom 3. I'm a programmer too, and I have never been brave enough to wade into 3D on my own. So good for you.

If your browser doesn't support java applets, then you probably just need to install java .. unless you are using some really ... really obscure web browser.
As to the difficulty, yeah, it doesn't make much sense right now. I'm planning on having at least 10 - 15 different mission-givers, and these initial 3 were supposed to be the tutorial levels (it's going to get much much harder)

ok, I've got a new demo posted here: http://www.thisisnotalabel.com/games/beatsmaster.htmlIt has mission selecting, and an upgrades screen (although you can't actually buy any of the upgrades yet). So far, the "cockpit" upgrades include a hint box, a goldfish (more money per mission), and rap sounds (so that you can take missions from rappers). Oh, and I got silly with a new title: BeatsMaster Privateer 2 Deluxe EditionThe "Privateer" in the title does actually have meaning: which upgrades you buy will affect which clients (missions) you can take.

Wow, I can't believe that I am the only person who uses jGame ( http://www.13thmonkey.org/~boris/jgame/). It is the shit. It makes game development sooooo smooth and easy. Of course, jgame is limited to 2D, and that could be a big limitation for some of you. Personally, I barely have the skills to make 2D graphics, let alone 3D, so I am perfectly happy sticking with two dimensions.

Hi all. Sorry for the long absence ... school and all that. The last compo I took part in was the generative comp ( http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=1789.0). Anyway, since I have spring break next week, I'm going to try and enter a game into this compo. Like last time, I'm working on a game where music is very important. Specifically, it occurs to me that a DJ's setup is a lot like a cockpit ... at least in terms of visuals and interface. So in this game, you will play a DJ who owns a shop where he makes beats and loops for his customers. As the game goes on, you will be able to earn upgrades to your cockpit that will add to the difficulty or change the gameplay style (the first upgrade will be a piano, which is shown in the demo). In terms of gameplay, it will basically be like Simon. We all remember, Simon, correct? Anyway, you can experience the gameplay yourself in the short demo here: www.thisisnotalabel.com/games/beatsmaster.htmlThat link goes to a java applet. I am using jGame for this project. and I'll close with the obligatory screenshots:

@Synnah: I like the ideas in your piece, but it ends just as soon as it gets going! MOAR! I don't quite know the melody yet (you know the way it takes you (well, me...) a couple of listenings to be able to hum back a melody of that length, or even have any feel for where it's going).
And, the piece doesn't really feel self-contained. I'm glad you felt that way. That's exactly what I was going for. I LOVE melodies that seem to kind of float aimlessly, and that's what I was trying to play with here. Now that I'm listening to it though, I can hear that the mix is pretty flawed. That synth really eats the rest of the ensemble ... I'll have it fixed in a second. (EDIT: Fixed ... or at least improved) As far as tremolo parts, I am using Garritan Personal Orchestra ( http://www.garritan.com/ ) and Varazdin Orchestral ( http://www.image-line.com/documents/varazdinorchestral.html ), but I am not using any tremolo samples.

HIJACKERS!!
Anyway, back to the subject at hand...
I'm thinking about doing a Japanese sex game version of Puzzle Quest. Of course, to do this, I would need a talented artist. Would anyone be interested in drawing scantily clad anime chicks for this game?

Personally, I'm not going to start on my entry until the compo starts ... other than thinking about it, that is. I tend to think that most people here will be similarly honest.
But seriously, would a 7 day headstart even help that much? If you can't finish your game in 31 days, then you probably can't finish it in 38 days.

If he has never written a game, or worse yet, has never programmed, he shouldn't be trying ANY 3d engines, but instead learning programming and game development basics in simple text-based or 2-dimensional frameworks.
True, I missed that 'never written a game' thing.
