Thanks for the feedback! We'll keep working at it to improve it even more. =)

Did it work? I hope it did! Especially if the checker said everything is fine. =)

Video is finally up! YouTube took overnight to process it but here it is!

Can't Microsoft create a goddamn player for XNA applications? This is just plain bullshit.

Don't think I'll be playing this entry. Oh, and my card doesn't have pixel shaders, so I guess it wouldn't work anyhow.

Yeah, sorry you had to spend all that time trying to get it to run... Seems like XNA's still got a ways to go before compatibility isn't such nonsense, even on machines that have it installed.
45  Community / Procedural Generation / Re: sin(Surfing) [Finished] on: June 01, 2008, 12:54:30 PM
Darn.. then I have no idea )_; Sorry...

And Terry, yupyup, we used a pixel shader to do Bloom. I guess we should add that to the sys requirements.
46  Community / Procedural Generation / Re: sin(Surfing) [Finished] on: June 01, 2008, 12:41:58 PM
Still doesn't work. I already have XNA and all that jazz anyway.

Hmm... do you have XNA 2.0 or 1.0? I don't know if that might be it but just to check...
47  Community / Procedural Generation / Re: sin(Surfing) [Finished] on: June 01, 2008, 12:30:40 PM
Sifu found this link that might help check XNA requirements! http://xnamatrix.com/xnareq.php

Aww man... that's such a pity. If I could, I'd come and lend you my computer to try it... Maybe it's a video card thing? )_;
I'll post a gameplay video in a bit to still be able to see the game though. Bummer...

I think something that gets overlooked often is, Best Menu Screen. =) The menu screen is the first thing people see and first impressions say a lot...

Other potential categories:
  • Could've been a VGNG entry with that title
  • Most/It's So "Indie"
  • Easiest/Hardest Game

Darn! I'm sorry it's crashing for some of you! )_; Hopefully Ryan's solution fixes it, and thanks so much Ryan for the feedback and the fix links (putting it on the first post too). And thanks to everyone else too!
BaronCid gave us some really good suggestions before and a combo thing would be perfect! Like having to jump at the next hill. We'll keep working on it after PG to see what we can make better to the game given more time.

The game is done!!! Check it out, everybody! =) Surfing on the sin-waves!
(Link and updated screenshots on first post)
52  Community / Procedural Generation / Re: Murderbots on: May 26, 2008, 09:26:22 AM
Yeah, I agree too! Awesome screenshots! When I first saw Rocket House I thought it was pre-rendered because it looked so nice. Although I think the objects there seem a bit 'rounder'?
I think the look here works well because of the strict angles. Maybe as long as all of the objects have right-angle-ness to them (not all angles but some), they'll harmonize each other?
It would be cool if somehow you could finish for the deadline, but either way good luck with the project! =)

Oh yeah? =) I think you're right, I'll have to play with the speed a bit! There's a Challenge Mode that Sifu Peng's in charge of which speeds up as you gain momentum (Pip's got it!) but I'm terrible with it so I haven't really tried faster gameplay yet. This mode plays more like a kindergartener game right now, lol.

Oh wow, I thought the download link was broken at first but the link in the first post of the thread worked. That game is fantastic, although really tough! I didn't understand the game from the YouTube video but playing it makes much more sense with your icon on the top.

And speaking of YouTube videos, I got a video capture of a bit of the game! Didn't want to give away too much of the gameplay yet but this shows more of how the game looks without the stillness of the screenshots.

This game is so pretty... I love the tiny-sprite style on it! (Plus, I have a beagle so the title totally caught my eye) I can't wait to be able to play it...
56  Community / Procedural Generation / Re: sin(Surfing) on: May 26, 2008, 04:41:59 AM
Yey!

I just hope it runs on my computer - XNA stuff tends not to Sad

Oh... I'll try to get a demo up soon so you can try it. I hope it runs on your computer too!

And thanks for the support! I saw several of the games from the last competition when my friend showed me this forum a couple weeks ago and I've gotta say, My First Skydiving Academy was just simply awesome!
57  Community / Townhall / Re: The Obligatory Introduce Yourself Thread on: May 26, 2008, 04:35:00 AM
Looks like I'm a bit late to introducing myself but here goes...

Hey everyone, I'm Raphael and my friend got me to look at this site and get me interested in working on and submitting a game, sin(Surfing), for the current PG competition.
I've loved video games as a little kid as seems all of us have, and I like to program game and especially graphics engines but mainly I am fascinated by the idea of creating something from nothing through a computer.

I've made various games in the past, particularly with the Game Creation Society at Carnegie Mellon University. And although I've just recently graduated, I am hoping that it just means more opportunities to work on interesting projects so I am looking forward to other future TIG competitions as well after this!

Hope to see everybody around!
58  Community / Procedural Generation / Re: sin(Surfing) on: May 26, 2008, 03:42:04 AM
sin(Surfing) seemed better as a title so we've added the 'ing' to the title. =)
And since colors are nice, I thought I'd share a few progress screenshots with some color! (also generated)

59  Community / Procedural Generation / Re: sin(Surf) on: May 25, 2008, 07:43:55 AM
Thanks everybody! I'll try to get a video up too when it's ready to show since the screenshot doesn't capture the fluidity of the waves. Trying to finalize most of the gameplay first but the next update should have some of the moves in it. =)
60  Community / Procedural Generation / sin(Surfing) [Finished] on: May 25, 2008, 03:44:39 AM
Update:

It's done! =) Everybody check it out! (Updated) Download Link

Also, if it crashes even after the redist, Ryan posted a solution that will hopefully make it work! Thanks, Ryan!

I couldn't get it to install even after I installed the XNA Redistributable 2.0, Cow gave me this advice (which he got from broknecho):

- Install the redistributable link originally posted here.
- Install this as well as this and you should be just peachy.

Also there is this link that Sifu found that can check if you meet the XNA requirements:
http://xnamatrix.com/xnareq.php

Requires XNA Redist 2.0 first, then just double-click to unpack and run.

Old Post:

Hi everybody! New to this forum! =)

My friend and I thought it might be interesting to submit to this competition so we made a prototype overnight. Since the oscillator has an interesting history with video games and it's always interesting to see lots of (procedurally-generated) waves, here we present a game to surf on an oscillator: sin(Surf) [Sine of Surf abbv. S.O.S]

It's being developed with XNA and still working on the gameplay and art style but please keep an eye out!
